Remembering the late, great legend Levon Helm on this day when he left the Earth in 2012. RIP.
I was fortunate to see them 13 times in their short existence including the Last Waltz always wanted to go to Levons barn but kids come life got in the way never made it.
One of the great musicians in rock. God lent him to us for way too short of a time.
@@hotajax None Better !!
How sad that as of today, 3 June 2021, three of five have left us: Mr. Manuel, Mr. Danko, and Mr. Helm.
Left earth already back. Takes about just a few minutes. Body lost. Being still here.
The Last Waltz, one of the best concerts of all time.
I watched the movie in a cinema two times a day for 7 days in 1979..
You’re damn right it is
I would say it was the most perfect live performance of all time ever captured on film, and the dance by Fleetwood Mac a close second...
@@deborahhatcher186 I agree!
It's flat out insane to see that many people firing on all cylinders through a whole set.
RIP Robbie. His reaction to Levon's drum fill at 2:58 is wonderful
was it the drum fill or the simultaneous and otherworldly yodelling? Could've been both! Jesus, the guys were great.
Robbie stole Levon’s money and left him having to continue to make music to make ends meet until his tragic passing. Robbie claimed all of the royalties and Levon was a young, naive kid from the south new to the music industry he had to know idea the concept of royalties and song writing credits. You think Robbies knows about a cripple creek or the night they drove ol Dixie down and all the farm lingo? Or is it possible the drummer from Arkansas who also sings your best songs is the one who wrote those lyrics? Robbies mic was turned off too btw … joke
I literally was born & raised on A Cripple Creek in Kittrell, Tennessee. The old `crick runs thru my granddad's land out behind the barn.
When I was a kid hearing these beautiful songs on the radio I honestly thought they were singing about our creek.
That same land, I was told, once belonged to Bluegrass legend & Grand Ole Opry founder, Uncle Dave Macon.
My whole family played bluegrass & old-time gospel music but, I just became a block-headed drummer. Nothing but love for The Band and everyone here enjoying this wonderful song.
Goosebumps every time. Levon's voice while masterfully commanding those drums is absolutely mesmerizing. Forever missed along with Rick and Richard
✨💎 You got it, Chief. Perfectly expressed. I was too small to see them in concert back then, but I did grow up listening to them. Especially _Take A Load Off Fannie/ The Weight,_ most of all. You've just spoken for hundreds of thousands of people who were fortunate enough to experience Levon & his crew, back in the 70's & the 80's. God Bless You; may you have peace, always 💜
RIP Robbie
Please send help I cannot stop watching this. Levon is one of the most pure musicians I've ever heard in my life.
He sure is. Something very special. He could make magic. That band was so gd good.
I couldnt agree more. I was a child at that time, too young to see them in concert. But decades later here it is on CZcams. Levon Healm is terrific! Being a musician myself, though, to me the best part is seeing how he & Rick, Richard, & Robbie are all really putting their _GUTS_ into the vocals; every one of them. I could never think of these men as a rock band. This is as soulful as real Soul Music will ever be, they just happen to be one White American, with White Canadians. And to have Mavis Staples & her sisters (plus an unnamed Black gentleman, too) for _Take A Load Off Fannie_ is absolutely capitol... the very best of the best 🎼🎸🎤
I can't tell you what it does for me to see Mavis Staples & the Staples Sisters performing, in their 30's & in their prime 🥲
Extremely influential on future musicians
So he coupled a great verse with one of the best drum fills. He was awesome
With all the fake accents among American and British singers, it does my heart good to hear Levon. He sounds exactly like precisely where he's from.
All but Levon are Canadians and they should just like what they are absolutely fabulous
It’s amazing that these Canadians and American captures a sense of roots. Roots look the same in Canada as they do in the US. These guys had a lot to write about.
Elaine, Arkansas, YUP
No fake accents from the Canadians!
While playing the drums...amazing
Everything about this song is gold, but when Rick Danko comes in at 1:55 and just belts it out, I just can't help but smile. I wish every recording of this song had him go that hard for that lyrics.
Levon Helm had one of the best singing voices I’ve ever heard. Full stop.
An serious drummer..
carlew12 The best, IMHO. ♥️Levon, RIP

One of my crushes for drummers. 😘💗😘
Oh my GOODNESS YES!!!
So many members of The Band have long left this earth. Hope they were all there to meet Robbie.
Levon helm, Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson and last but definitely not least Rick Danko aka the most underrated band ever. Honestly it's absolutely incredible listening to how well they meshed as a band. Also this is my favourite live performance of all time!
Love Rick Danko, have love The Band since I first heard this song back in the late sixties when I was living in New York City, but Rick is special as is Robbie, not to take away from the other band members.
"I sure wish I could yodel" Great improv sung with passion Levon Helm was at his finest in this concert, proving if any more proof was needed, what a great drummer he really was. Man, I miss THE BAND. Dylan must have pinched himself when he found these rascals.
Rick Sjoquist that part is absolutely epic and I replay over and over again. What a performance!
Levon's voice definitely got better with age.
been practicijng exactly that and nailed it now.
Secret is being completely reelaxed and taking breath into account.
sit up straight, or sstanbd up straight.. no slouching as it decapacitates proper needed breathing
I love that! And it looks like Robbie got a chuckle out of it as well :)
The Band, the only group with the talent, and balls, to name themselves THE BAND!
You got that right they were AWSOME! Eric Clapton said once talking about his band Cream, we thought we were the bees knees of rock, but when I heard the Band playing live I wanted to quit Cream and join the Band, but the band didn't even let Clapton join... daaammnnn!
They were and still are, The BAND.
truth
@@deborahhatcher186 That's because Clapton wanted to jam, and they said, "We don't jam"
lol
According to legend, when they moved to Big Pink, it was the locals that said " There goes the Band"
Man, I love Levon. He was unbelievable
They all look like they are having the time of their lives. I bet that show had the best atmosphere.
5 talented bon vivants came together and for a time, created what most assuredly pleased our Creator. Morn not that it ended, but rejoice that it happened. Props to Ronnie Hawkins for stoking that fire for it to happen.
Levon Helm the master of drums and singing god rest his soul
One of the best gifts my dad gave me was introducing The Band to me. There music feels so old, yet it also sounds like no one else in music at that time. Nostalgic and fresh together, some kind of magic!
One of the greatest song endings of all time! Between Levon's yodeling, and Robbie's fierce guitar, it's pure magic! Goosebumps.
I remember going to the theater in Denver and watching this after several bong hits and the whole theater was like one big party. Back when you could still have fun.
So cool!
You can have have your Phil Collins. I'll take Levon Helm 10 out of 10 times
👍👍👍👍👍👍
NOT TO.SOUND SACRILEGIOUS BUT""""" 3:40 AMEN BROTHER"""

@@jtjoemammaWhat're you lookin' at ma gut fer?
Why do you have to bring Collins into it? Hes one of the best if not the best prog rock drummer of all time
That improvisation by Levon at 3:00 is the absolute best..
goosebumps
yup! sooooo in the moment! Great concert, Great band. The Band!
That’s called “being in the zone”
yeah yeah you know i sure wish i could yodel like a...
Levon sang with such great enthusiasm this concert on all of his songs, this and the night they drive old Dixie down are my favorites
Levon Helm was such a beautiful man
I really wish rock music wasn't dying and we still had bands like The Band around.
Check us out if you like The Band!
I wouldn’t say it’s dying, but there is a dearth of songwriters in the genre. Everyone seemingly wants to shred, but few musicians can assemble a tight, proper song.
check out big thief, you will NOT be disappointed
Check out The Marcus King Band
Tedeschi Trucks Band
Levon Helm so underrated. He was a very good actor as well.
When he took the switch to 'retty in Coal Miner's Daughter.
I loved Levon's role in The Right Stuff..
Levon Helm is maybe my favorite drummer ever and an incredible singer too! It’s almost unfair for one man to be so talented
What a drummer and singer, he goes beyond Southern rock. Got a soul, really.
Something about this song, cheers me up every time I am feeling sad.
Masterpiece of world music, a true work of art!!
Levon's singing was as if it was another piece to his kit.... rhythmically, both vocals and playing in the pocket together.... very unique
2019, anyone? This music will live forever. Love you, Levon.
Lisa Lee about to be 2020 and still rocking the band
To think only Garth remains alive Hudson is still alive and all the rest dead 😢 proves the brevity of life .
This band changed everything for me thanks guys
Rest in peace
Rick Danko
Richard Manuel .
Robbie Robertson
Levon Helm.
Garth Hudson is 86 last time I looked.
Out of the hundreds of concerts that I have attended, the best show that I can recall, was, without question, The Band, in 1996 @ The House of Blues/Sunset Strip. I was completely amazed and enamored as I watched these legendary performers switching positions, flawlessly, and without skipping a beat. After the show, a friend and I walked out front, right on to their bus, like we belonged there, and all of the men, including their driver, were as kind as could be. I still have the ticket stub with Garth's autograph on it. I was walking around in awe, for days, at what I though was a special kind of perfection that I had not seen before, or since. I will never forget that very special evening.
Love this. Godspeed, Tommy.
Love Levon, and God Bless The Hawk. R.I.P. in Rock n Roll Heaven.
This was one of the first things I watched when I first got cable TV in the very early 80s. I stayed up til 3am.... I absolutely loved it ❤
Sing it Levon baby......the songs are still traveling in space.
😢 God bless his soul levon home was the best drama to ever live on and care what anybody says, saw him Woodstock 1994 I'll never forget it 😢 rest in peace our dear levon
That fill at 2:59 may be the greatest of all time.
RIGHT?!?!
Watched that one part like 10x in a row
Pure genius...I really miss The Band. One of a kind.
I heard this song for the first time in my life three days ago and I´ve listen to every version of it I can find. This is the absolute best version out there, the tempo and the ending is really cool.
i love that shirt Levon's wearing - i also love how Danko realizes it's his turn for backup vocals.. Danko was the greatest
There's nothing like the way Danko chimes in!
these 5 men provided the soundtrack of my youth
THANK YOU
The true voice of American music in my opinion! 1million percent effort, every time! Robbie Robertson is on record as saying Levon Helm's vocals and drumming is completely authentic throughout the entire Last Waltz video! Nothing has been tweaked or corrected later on . His performance in the complete concert is totally original. Perfection! How many musicians can say the same thing throughout their careers?
Some moments you want to go on for ever . This is one !
The best!!!! Ever.
Levon Helm, the best vocalist AND LEAD drummer there ever was.
This is as good as it gets. Forevermore!!!!!!!
Aman my brother! Levon, probably could have sung the phone book and made it a hit!
2:45 - the cut from Robbie's stinging lick to Levon leaning into the drums: another priceless moment from this film!
I never noticed that! great find!
Greatest concert film ever made. I loved Muddy Waters and Neil Diamond's time in the show. Great memories!
I remember I used to play this song for my son all the time in Minnesota. My son was a toddler back then. He loved it. I loved the song too. We played the song over and over without knowing who were the singers. We just enjoyed the song. Later on, I did some research on the song and found out that the band was called the Band and the lead singer was Levon Helm. I found out that Levon was an American and Robert Robertson, the lead guitarist was Canadian. I fall in love with the Band, especially this song. I still listen to it now. You need to listen to a story told by Robert Robertson about Bob Dylan and how they toured together. It is a wonderful story.
Levon... pure soul in his voice for all to hear & appreciate. When he sings it's from his heart.
My favorite version of this song.
I'm listening to this, one of the songs I heard many times in my youth, while walking to a convenience store near my house in Tacoma, on August 9, 2023, the day the writer of the song is reported to have passed away. Well, he was 80, so it's not unusual, but still it does occasion some grief, some acknowledgement of the inexorable passing of time.
Come to think of it, August 9 was the same day Jerry passed away, never again to produce divine music, 28 years ago.
The carnal glint in Levon's delivery, Robbie's breath-bating fills, the surge of voices into the chorus...the smiles at the end that say: we nailed it!
Truth. How fortunate I am to be able to hear this, to feel it, to understand it. My life has meaning because of songs like this.
the drum fill and vocals at 3:00 are pure bliss
Levon. Wow, just wow.
The band is one of the world's great creations
One of the best songs ever.
An extraordinary band. Great Groove and Feeling. When the music was still played all live and great emotions
Levon Helm of the all time MVP of rock drummers. Singing like that while playing bang on. Levons parts were also the only ones not needing any dub over in post
These guys were amazing what a song and what a band The Fantastic The Band.
I was supposed to go to this concert but came down with mono. My friends went, Thanksgiving 1976. I was a junior in HS in NYC. We were all going to say we were sleeping over each other's houses, get on a flight to SF, see the show, go right back to the airport and come home. I would have been grounded until I was 40 (deservedly) and it would have been completely worth it. I've since seen every member of the Band live except for Richard Manuel. Levon was a lovely man, kindness personified. RIP Levon, Rick, Richard.
Some good-ole Canadian boys doing it up right ....with a great American drummer/singer taking the lead on this one !!!
So much music crammed into that three and a half minutes.
When the LAST WALTZ was released, I dutifully went to watch it everyday. And, I carry out the duty here now. ..
RIP Robbie Robertson. 💔
I cried when Levon Helm died. 😭Helm was one of a kind. 💔💔💔💔
The Band was amazing in The Last Waltz.
Only Garth Hudson alive now.
With the deaths of Richard Manuel in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999, Levon Helm in 2012, and Robbie Robertson in 2023, Hudson is the last living original member of The Band. He just turned 86. Wow. Fricken time FLIES!!
Got to sing this in concert with Levon. He was with Ringo and his all star band. It was flippin awsome!!!!
Thanks to Scorsese for creating this beautiful film.
Levon helm the best no one can be better than him
Levon gives it everything, love it.
Music critic John Carrol wrote "Levon is the only drummer who can make you cry."....................AMEN!!!!!!
This concert film was released back in 1978 but it is such good quality it seems like HD quality. The filmmakers deserve respect and kudos. It was filmed in from a 1976 concert and the quality is ad good any thing produced today in 2022. Ahead of its time indeed.
One word: Scorsese
Pure gold.what if they got our today musical equipments back than!!woo.
Thanks to y'all Levon,Rick,Richard RIP music up in heaven would be so great now
Loving this on a beautiful day on my cripple creek in my backyard. 2024.

Hard working .no holds barred musical craftsmen
Levon what a talent
Levon, is the true master of this song.
What a åerformance, every beat is on point, Leon Helm is a fantastic drummer, Bass and Guitar is just sublime, aces all around, What a show :-)
I just started listening to the band and they are awesome!!
Nothing to say, only listen this timeless voice💖💖💖💖💖💖
Damn Levon had some pipes!!!
Robbie Robertson plays the fender Stratocaster like an angel
Music critic John Carrol wrote " Levon Helm is the only drummer that can make you cry.

Singing lead and playing drums at the same time is like flying two jets at the same time.
Damm! I've never seen a drummer sing like that!
Levon looked so happy singing this
Love the music of The Band ❤️🎸❤️🎸❤️🎸❤️🎸❤️
I discovered this outstanding "BAND" after they had given their final concert. What a starting point to become a fan!

I've watched or listened to this concert so many times........ it doesn't even need to be on a I can still go through the whole thing in my head ! A couple hits besides the obvious....
Helpless ( The Band w/ Neil Young & Joni Mitchell sounding like an angel back lit backstage... WOW 😇🎙 )
Dry Your Eyes ( Neil Diamond & The Band - starts slow & picks up tempo )
" I'm only gonna play one song for you, but I'm gonna play it GOOD" 😎🎙
The whole concert is amazing & for me I lose track of time & it doesn't even feel like a hour has gone..........
never mind 3+ ✌😎
RIP Robbie.
Love for Levon. Only only who refused (he and didn't have t), dub over his performance.
It don’t get better than this
Levon, you're the best (and I read your book!)
You may be interested in the most recent movie about The Band.... Called "Once Were Brothers", I think I've watched it 4 times now! Not only is the music great, but it gives a really good background look into how they wrote their songs, and how they all got along. The movie is based on the Robbie Robertson book "Testimony" which also gave a great look inside this great band. Fascinated me.
One of my favs by these guys, love this live version!!
I wish I could YODEL!
