Being surrounded by so much talent, & saturated with so much good music, it was only natural for us to take it for granted. Long live the 70's. More than just great music, bad fashion, & a series of historic events. It is an open minded attitude; it is neighborly love; it is acceptance & respect of viewpoints & of faiths unlike ones own. It is unity & friendliness, & hospitality. The love of the greater number has cooled off in the decades since, just as Jesus warned. But the 70's still live on, because _WE ARE THE 70's, & WE REMAIN UNCHANGED_

Mavis Staples makes an art out of breathing in. Insane, how much she kills in this track, even as a background singer.

...And since Mavis & Pop individually sang a stanza (thats not a verse, but usually _four_ verses) of lead vocals, that makes them supporting singers, too. Not just backing vocalists... The Staples Family. Wow! What an everlasting treasure. Someone earlier in this comment section said 100 years from now people will still be in awe of this performance. Theyre right. This is no ordinary music. It's the gift that outlasts us all & keeps right on giving. I cant think of a better Soul or Rock number that should stay in the Classic Top 40 for the next 100 years

I saw this at the theater here in Charleston WV when it first came out. Back when a theater was an experience. Large auditorium with fantastic acoustics and people had the respect to be quiet and let everyone hear and see a beautiful piece of art on the big screen. I was a teenager. Probably 14, didn’t have my drivers license yet. I absolutely loved every member of the band and every guest musician was incredible and was a treat. A once in a lifetime experience that was a gift to the people who love music and rock and roll. I wish Levon was still here and I could personally thank him for the lifetime of music I have lived since then. I will be 62 in December God willing. I wrote music, played music. Recorded music. Lived it and loved it. Watched my heroes come and go. Music is an ART FORM. And just like an artist who paints . I learned that you can write 100 songs and be fortunate to have a couple of excellent songs and maybe a few good and dozens not good at all . To put it kindly. I’m happy that I had a couple I consider masterpieces. Please forgive me for rambling. It comes with age and the way I lived my life and I inherited a lot of it. Anyway. I want to say Thank you to Robbie Robertson. He is one of my all time favorites. A class act. He has represented Rock and Roll with the highest degree of integrity. Incredibly talented, he has always been one of those people who you would say it’s obvious that his parents raised him right. Thank you for being a roll model . Someone I can look back at and remember that is where I got my start. My mother kept music in our home,. She played every instrument you could think of. From piano. autoharp. Guitar . accordion . Never had a lesson. My dad never played an instrument but he liked Johnny Cash and always had 8 track tapes playing in the Chevy on our beach trips. My big brother Bill the Preacher. Payed guitar and put bands together everywhere we went. He turned me on to iron butterfly, credence Clearwater revival. Simon and Garfunkel. Bob Dylan . Elton John. Always giving me albums for my birthday. One that always stood out was Aerosmith’s hardest drug fueled album when he was away in Seminary school. To anyone who reads this. Thank you for allowing me to ramble on. Because I’m at a point where every day is a gift. Even though times are not good like they used to be. But music still gives me hope.

No, you wont hear it in todays music. But guys (& gals) like me still play that entire spectrum from the Era. For me the best concert docky ever produced by the greatest urban filmmaker in America - Mr. Scorsese. Just this one clip from THE LAST WALTZ should tell everyone how epic the BAND truly was during their reign in the business, and how this kind of talent like so many others from the mid 1960's thru to 1980 will never be again. R.I.P. Robbie, Levon, Rick and Richard and to the maestro of the group, Mr. Garth who I think is still alive - thanks for your sacred music! Peace.

I sure am this was the best ever recording of this song. The Staple Singers sounded so beautiful, then Pops Staple comes in next qnd just makes you feel a chill. And if thats not awesome enough then Rick Danko from the Band steps out of no where and just is ready to go. If you havent seen the movie The Last Waltz you really are missing out. First Martin Scorsese produced it. And it was on a Thanksgiving night and it was their very last concert as The Band. But it also has Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Ringo Starr, Van Morrison and on and on and on

Its as if those supporting lead verses were written especially for mavis, & for pop 🥲. Hard to imagine the idea of inviting the staples family to join in this song came long after the song was actually written. It fits like a glove, doesnt it?

I wish I had listened to my friend in 1975 when he said that I should go see The Band. The musicians are good but together they make the most incredible music you ever heard. And he was right, they are still the best band ever. Each one puts his heart and soul into every song. They make you feel the emotion!

Miss, you have unearthed to absolute gems, The Band is a good group but they're not where my attention lies. The Staple Singers though, Oh my word "I'll take you there." and "Respect Yourself." Were staples(no pun intended) in my home. I'm now 53 years old and Miss Mavis still can bring me to tears, joyfully to tears faster than any of the old soul singers. I often lament never having been able to meet Pops and Mavis.
