The Band: "Shape I'm In". & Ronnie Hawkins: "Who Do You Love".

- From the movie "The Last Waltz" ... I've got it on a VCR tape from a TV showing, then I bought the subsequent releases on commercial VHS tape / DVD, and now the Blu Ray edition. It's a bit sad watching it now that Richard, Rick and Levon are no longer with us, but it's a movie that captured a moment in time when "The Band" were about to split up, yet are seen here playing what might have been one of their finest performances. There might have been a fair bit of acrimony behind the scenes, but the film shows "The Band" preserved on film, and as a live music lover from a generation that hasn't much in the way of quality concert recordings ... I give thanks for this recording of The Thanksgiving Day Concert from 1976.

Ronnie Hawkins came north from Arkansas and brought teenage Levon Helm with him. He gave a bunch of young Canadian boys their Southern soul.
Watching this with amazement! The greatest night in musical history
Ronnie leaves the scene like an arsonist thinking "All good. The band is on fire.Big time...BIG TIME!!!"
Levon may not have wanted to do this show, or the movie, but he was clearly feelin' it on stage. He's so, so good from start to finish.
I never knew he didn’t want to do the movie. Why was that?
Well, he didn't want The Band to stop touring, and the movie was the end of The Band touring. Robbie had enough of touring, he had been doing it since he was 16, he was married with 3 young children, and 3 of the Band members, Levon, Richard and Rick were doing some heavy drugs etc. Robbie felt like if they continued something bad would happen. Rick and Richard had already had serious accidents, especially Rick, broke his neck and back, and the were crashing cars all the time.@@roccocormier3821
They were all good that night, even Richard even though he was not in top form.
@@roccocormier3821 because robbie was tired of babysitting a bunch of drunks and heroin addicts who didn't contribute any song ideas and wanted to just party and wreck cars. robbie was married with children, producing, writing, interested in movie soundtracks, interested in being the multi layered 50 year career success story that he became and wanted to end the band with one last show. and the others, as proven in their attempts at careers without him, were about to lose the engine to the train that brought them to these heights. that is why levon didn't want to do that show.
@roccocormier3821 Ending The Band was Robbie's decision. Levon didn't want to do a concert film, that too was Robbie's decision.
Royalty issues were starting where Robbie was claiming complete songwriting royalties for songs that the others felt they contributed on.
They all look so happy, even Garth. Ronnie Hawkins is the man
I've watched this so many times and yet this time is when I actually recognize how Robbie is conducting. He is absolutely leading The Band like the best defenseman on your power play!
Ronnie Hawkins loved those boys...and they loved him.
Mr. Robbie really could burn that fretboard. Also this may be the first fanning of the flames on the guitar🍻
Now The Beautiful Robbie Robertson joins the Band in the Big Gig in the Sky 💔🎸🎶❤️
Rest Easy 💐
Garth is the only one left?
In Levon Helm's book, This Wheel's on Fire, he talks about how much he hated The Last Waltz. He thought that Richard Manuel should have gotten more screen time, but he also said that Richard looked really bad at that time, "like Che Guevara after the Bolivians got through with him."
THANK YOU!
RIP Ronnie Hawkins...the Hawk!
Richard had such a great voice. A wonderful soul that we lost too soon.
Big time, Bill! Big time!
Great stuff. I'm gonna have to go back and watch the whole thing again.
So many memories with this music. Aww the good old days
Love that little delayed crash Levon gives at the end there.
RIP Ronnie. Gonna miss ya mightily.
That was fucking epic 🤘🤘
The Heavens are surely Howlin...RIP Ronnie 'The Hawk' Hawkins...
So cool no body today can can stay up with them
I met Richard when I was 10 yrs old on Brunswick st in Stratford at my cousins house 😢

In loving memory of My grandmother Brigid Lynch born Scotland circa 1880 raised Northern Ireland. My birth mother Ruth Catherine Ceceila Doherty Shepherd told Me at 26 Upland Street, Dorchester, Massachusetts the home of Mary and Elizabeth (Coast Guard Officer) Doherty My mother's beautiful sisters. Both lifelong teachers in Boston. Betty was Danny Kaye's secretary once upon a time. Neither ever married and lived there with their mother born on the boat from Messina, Sicily whose name I do not know beyond My beloved all loving entrancing 'Grammy'. All devout Roman Catholics of 'Saint Ambrose' church in Dorchester. Grammy passed when I was 14 and it was the deepest blow I'd ever experienced. There was no love like hers and I wrote somewhere in the blog that any grace I'd received came from Her. Now I 'know' that that is true and that there's plenty more on the Irish side. Italian Sicilian Irish marriages are common in Boston. My aunt MiMi used to tell the story about how when their father John Doherty born Ireland would take them out for walks and people would ask Him who's children They were. We all used to laugh about that and I've experienced the same thing My whole life based on how I look. Someone arranged for Me to read "Black Like Me' when I was 6 and we had a black kid named Lance in 8th grade from Boston that would come out to our house at 49 South Pine Street, Bradford, MA to play pool at 10pm on a school night. I used to eat at Lance's house too. He had family in Bradford. Only black kid I'd known till I got to 'Roslindale Youth Services' at age 14 "I'll put your dick in the dirt" was how my first black acquaintance there greeted Me but we parted best of friends. So, Betty and MiMi used to drive all the 'old' people around the parish and iron the altar cloths and stuff and one day Betty cracked something in Her back at age 77 while opening the garage door. They found cancer and She was given a short time to live. She was hospitalized and MiMi (84 or so) because She had 'Sun Downer's' was put somewhere else. They died within hours of each other and were waked and buried side by side on January 10, 2000 at Saint Ambrose. With the two caskets to Our left. My mother was front row right facing the altar and I was to Her right when the African priest who's name I do not remember came over, bent down to My mother Ruth and said: You know Ruth, MiMi asked me to pray with Her that if Betty went she would go too". As grace would have it I was there to hear that and to understand the power prayer has in 'Our' family. Ten years later to the day January 10, 2010 I'd been singing with the 'Old South Church Choir' in Boston under Harry Huff as one of two 1st tenors. We had a third who was our biggest tenor voice Julius but Harry put him on 2nd for reasons we'll never know now. Jonas and I sang side by side in the front row often singing right into Harry's face. I had the honor a few times of being the closest to his face. Harry is the very soul of that whole period of that church. Period. So, I got up that morning in my 4th floor room at 90 Waltham Street behind Copley area code 02118 same as my last 5 and was 'prompted' to go to Saint Ambrose for the 10th anniversary of MiMi and Betty's funeral and I was specifically prompted to walk (5 miles) even though I was so close to the T. I had no idea what time the service was and hadn't been to Saint Ambrose since 2000 . I was prompted that I didn't have time to bathe. "get dressed and start walking" so I did and even though I drove cab in Boston 5 years and lived in Dorchester 7 years and have been to 'Field's Corner' a zillion times...I got lost somewhere in Dorchester on the south side of Dorchester Ave and I was panicking. It was like a dream. "how could I be lost I wondered" and just like a dream I walked into Saint Ambrose in perfect time to be the last to receive Communion. If I'd been 20 seconds later I would have missed it. Maybe 10. So, I knelt in the congregation prayed and sang along with the choir from where I was. Then the Irish priest who's name I don't recall but gave Him a big hug and told Him the story later said: "I'm sorry to inform you that Father ? (the African priest) brother passed away and he can't be here". After the service I walked to UMass Boston for their guitar camp having written to Shawn about it praying maybe she'd go if in the area. So I got there and was given a name tag and there was a young woman sitting next to Me with the name tag 'Sandra' and I thought it was Shawn in disguise and I turned away to scan the scene thinking of how I would question Her and when I turned around She had flat out vanished. I ran down the hall and down the elevators. Gone as gone can be and this is a fragment of what it's like to be Michelle Colvin
All My love to My blessed Cosmic Celtic Kin and especially today to My blessed Brother in Erin Christ Mario Erwin

Man, what a great performance...until Ronnie Hawkins comes out and ruins it. Geez
They were The Band because of Ronnie. Get your head out of your ass, Matt.

Hey Matt that's my Cuz--and he trained all those guys in case you don't know
@@andrewbicseymusic I can be trained by Jimmy Page, but if he came out drunk and ruined my gig I'd be annoyed.
@@JamesSmith-ou9sd The Hawk is a straight showman during this show. I actually enjoy his songs the most out of The Last Waltz. But you’re right, doesn’t compare to Neil Diamond!
