I cannot describe my sadness on the loss of Robbie Robertson- “and the rains fall down on my door- and the dawn don’t rescue me no more.” I’ve followed The Band for decades and have the clearest memories of listening to The Last Waltz over and over and over. These losses of great musicians are hitting me harder and harder and harder. Thank you Robbie.
love to you, Deborah.....I get it...and as I came here to watch Robbie.....then you see Rick and Levon....and then Garth comes out on the sax...the only one left. The music matters.
We made a tactical error, Deborah. We attached deeply to literally hundreds of musicians that were ten years or so older than us, and now they are dying almost daily. And the ones who wrote the insightful songs, and the challenging songs - the songs that pushed us into becoming deeper ... those are the ones, whose passing hits us the hardest. I think that, when Dylan dies, the country will just shut down for a week.
I listen to this one so much. This is my favorite song in The Last Waltz. Rick's vocals are crushing. Robbie's magical right hand shimmy shake during the solo. Garth on smooth sax. Sighhhhh. They are so young and beautiful and talented here. Time Flies. Rest well, Robbie. You've got some good musicians to hang with on the other side. Save me a good seat at the show.
My first wife split after six years of marriage. She returned about four months later. I heard this tune in my apartment, from a Band album, and played it for her upon her return. She sat and listened with no emotion whatsoever. That's when I knew it was over. I moved forward and am with the love of my life after 36 years. A truly great tune and it played an important role in my life! Thank you Robbie and the Band for providing such beautiful music for a generation and more!!
Although Hudson is physically frail - he has reportedly been living in an assisted care facility since the death of his wife, Maud, in 2022 Garth is the sole survivor of The Band, I'm 70 and can only wish to live as long as Garth. They were a truly amazing band so special and light years ahead of their contemporaries.
Maybe it’s Garth’s memories that keep him going. A guy who might have ended as a music teacher in small town Ontario, instead was given the gift of sharing his instrumental legacy with the world. Without Garth, The Band would not have been.
There should be a limit on how many consecutive times one can listen to this version. After three, you are bordering on a state of despair that renders one useless for the remainder of the day.
The best thing Scorsese ever did was to save this, the best version of The Band's most heart wrenching song, for us to cherish until Death do us part. Period. Thank You, The Band. The best band of the 20th Century.
That scar under Rick’s right eye? I have one just like it. It was created as I was being born. I was born breach, meaning the doctor had to reach in with his forceps and grab me by the head to get me out. Many equate breach birth to PTSD. All I know is, even that far back, I didn’t want to come out.
I had to grow up (many years) to appreciate how great The Band really was. As part of my Thanksgiving ritual I saw The Last Waltz again today. The more I hear Rick Danko, the more I love him. He draws you in. When the song is done you don't know whether to hug him or give him a bowl of soup to care for him.
One of the purest songs ever- I can listen to this over and over again. The sax is brilliant. Appreciate all of these musicians. You will be missed Robby. Your music will live on. Rest in peace 🎼☮️
they were all brilliant. this version of this song is heartbreakingly beautiful. it's been making me cry since it was released. they're all gone now except Garth. there's no holding back the tears as I'm listening now...
Check out the conception and how this was made and you'll understand why it's better than a studio version. It's great to see that other people haven't forgotten what good music is.
100%. I’ve watched this performance so many times it’s almost embarrassing to admit, but it’s just perfection, by every single member. Thanks to Robbie Robertson for writing this most gorgeous, saddest of songs, and having the vision to recognize that Rick Danko was the only one to sing it, Also love Robbie’s tasty, soulful note-pinching solos and fills. Garth’s sax brings me to my knees. The harmonies are so beautiful. Rick’s emotion and broken voice filets me every time, and my heart just bleeds out.
Danko seemed like the gentlest soul. Richard seemed like he was always hurting in every way. I hope he found peace and is playing music with his brothers Rick and Levon.
I knew Rick and Levon, to a lesser extent. Rick and I were friends for over 7 years before he passed away. He was funny, goofy, shy, and would literally give his shirt off his back to someone in need. He was truly one of the purist souls I've ever met. His demons are what eventually killed him. I visit him and Levon at least once a month when I'm near Woodstock. I miss him.
@@zahrahblissHow lovely for you to be able to say this, Danko’s voice sure reaches the parts ❤- thank you for your lovely words about him. I’ve loved listening to the Band since I first saw The Last Waltz many moons ago 🐝
4:45 am June 6th of 2020, I said my finals goodbye to my mother. I have a gaping hole where my heart once resided. And the first thing I thought of was the lyric “and the sun don’t shine anymore, and rains fall down on my door.” Only difference is that the rains fall on my soul as I weep for my dear sweet mother. It breaks my heart I didn’t get to say I love you one last time. Rest easy mom, no more pain.
I was driving on the PA Turnpike listening to WXPN from Philly and they announced Rick' death and played this song. I had to pull off to the shoulder to cry my eyes out.
Yes, indeed, Garth’s sax solo makes up for the first guitar solo. JRR had to up his game after hearing that and finished stronger. Now Rick and Solomon Burke must be trading hellacious verses on that one up in heaven. Great song, thank you for sharing it.
Dear Dr Rick.... Sorry to notice about your loss.... I lost two wives 10 years apart were murdered when I wasn't around to protect them.... Talk about stampeding cattle...... This is as close to perfection as one can get. Not in a sense of the perfect rhythm or every note perfect, but in a sense of music perfectly expressing human emotions. They created a magic moment we can all share.
The greatest moment in the history of rock? Even the Beatles did not reach this level of perfection. How Rick sings the lyric at 3:46 is unbelievable. Even Robbie Robertson looks across as if he cannot believe he is a member of this band and shares the stage with these guys. And when Hudson cuts in with Helms oh so leisurely drumming...there are no words, simply respect and awe.
I'm starting to notice a pattern here in the comment sections among youtube videos of bands. When someone wants to elevate a particular band they make it a point to include the Beatles in their comment, and say the Beatles didn't do this or that.

"I never felt so alone before" is so true. My wife died and I miss her so much. This is such a powerful song. Rick's singing makes the lyrics so sad. Than you have Robertson;s riffs are so planted in the song that it's stunning. I saw them with Dylan way back when.

David Crosby, Gordon Lightfoot and now Robbie Robertson. I grew up listening to their music in the 60s & 70s. It was a real privilege to hear them getting started.
My wife and I listen to the Last Waltz every couple of weeks, and we have for 22 years of courting and marriage. Before that I listened to The Band for many many years. They are the best. Never saw them, though. Took them for granted when I was young and in America. Lived half a world away most of my life, and when in NYC never even made it to the Midnight Rambles... don't put off for tomorrow what you owe it to yourself to do today.
One of the greatest songs every written, beautifully, tastefully performed. I hope that Robbie, Rick, Richard, Levon rest in peace and that Garth lives in peace. "If there is a rock n roll heaven, you know they have a hellova band!"

... and for those of you who haven’t seen the entire “The Last Waltz”, you owe it yourselves to get on it. One of the best filmed concerts ever. A real who’s who of the music industry of that era, and the folks they played with. Dr. John, the Hawk, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Emylou Harris, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, et al. The film and sound quality is phenomenal. Truly magical.
Tim Law - it’s difficult for me to put them in any ranking. The concert is so good, that once I get hooked on a great song, another then another comes along. The whole concert is so superb!
This performance is sublime. Imagine being up there on stage, knowing you will never do this again. Robbie's playing amazed and mystified other guitarists when he was stll a teenager with the Hawks. This a rare taste of that fire. Rick steps right up here. We get to hear Levon's voice as a harmony - we can't really hear Richard's but we can feel it. ...And then Garth tops it all off for us. What a band.
One of the best love songs of all time.I loved those guys and my first concert ever was them in Long Beach,Ca after I returned from Vietnam, unforgettable.
This is the saddest vocal performance ever. He sounds like a destroyed man, a drunken wino in the alley singing out at 1am to the darkness, all alone. My friends, that is a compliment, not a joke. I love it!! Breaks my heart every time. R.I.P.
Every time you see one of these spectacular Band performances, one can only curse what hard drugs and booze deprived us of. No group was better than when these guys were together.
"Well I love you so much and it's all I can do Just to keep myself from telling you That I never felt so alone before." The way that Danko sings those lines just cracks my heart wide open.
RIP Robbie Robbertson, as well as Levon, Rick, and Richard. The brilliance of this song makes it hard to compare it to anything modern. These guys were truly unparalleled.
I learned about the Band because I changed my major from writing to screenwriting in college (Syracuse University). I had one class about music in film and had to watch this film. I fell in love with their music. My mother bought me a case of CDs by the Band for Christmas.

That lyric sticks with me too. It's absolute desperation.
Yeah, that lyric is the polar opposite of "The sun will come out tomorrow..." It makes no difference when despair and heartbreak prevail.

Dr. John, the Hawk, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Emylou Harris, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, et al. The film and sound quality is phenomenal. Truly magical.
Thank you Mr. Scorsese for this monument!!!
So many highlights, but I'd put at the top of the list Joni Mitchell, the Hawk, and definitely the Staples on The Weight.
Tim Law - it’s difficult for me to put them in any ranking. The concert is so good, that once I get hooked on a great song, another then another comes along. The whole concert is so superb!
One thing I am sure of: 30 years from now this song brings a simle and a tear as it did 30 years ago when I was a teenager.
One of their greatest songs and the saxophone at the end just kills it
This performance is sublime.
Indescribably beautiful.
And the dawn don't rescue me no more. That line gets me every time.
Incredible voice but more importantly one of the purest souls. No affectation.
This is a nearly perfect song.
It is so good.
@@45hotro It touches me to my very core. The emotional human loss and unwavering love
What a great moment in time.
If the lyrics of this song dont rip your heart out then I guess you managed to hang on to the one you love. Hug them close
This is the saddest vocal performance ever. He sounds like a destroyed man, a drunken wino in the alley singing out at 1am to the darkness, all alone. My friends, that is a compliment, not a joke. I love it!! Breaks my heart every time. R.I.P.
Well said
Rick Danko may be the coolest dude ever ... and with a voice that could quite literally break hearts!
Every time you see one of these spectacular Band performances, one can only curse what hard drugs and booze deprived us of. No group was better than when these guys were together.
“ Stampeding cattle they rattle the walls” crushes me every time.
"Well I love you so much and it's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before."
The way that Danko sings those lines just cracks my heart wide open.
It's almost as if he's going break down and cry right there...
Rick Danko is fantastic. R.I.P.
The Band personify a great musical era, each one of them is a genius, as is evident in this recording
I’ll keep sayin this til the day I die. This is the best performance on The Last Waltz. ❤️ to beautiful Rick Clare Danko.
I’ll never not get goosebumps during Garth’s sax solo
This is so beautiful. When the sax solo enters, bring tears to my eyes.
This song makes me think of of my husband who died 27 yrs ago he was a big band fan always watched the movie!
RIP Robbie- the music will last forever
Saw them in 1969 first time
RIP Robbie Robbertson, as well as Levon, Rick, and Richard. The brilliance of this song makes it hard to compare it to anything modern. These guys were truly unparalleled.
The harmonies, the guitar solo and sax, Good Lord! They don't make 'em like this anymore! ❤️🎶🎸🎵
Love Rick Danko's passion when he's singing this song--what a great song👍🏽👏🏼🤠
R.I.P. Robbie..... Thanks for the music and memories...........
What a classic 👍🎸🎸🎸🎸
Rick Danko was the coolest guy in rock and roll. RIP brother. You'll be loved forever.
"And the dawn don't rescue me any more" brilliant and may be one of my favorite lyric lines.
I learned about the Band because I changed my major from writing to screenwriting in college (Syracuse University). I had one class about music in film and had to watch this film. I fell in love with their music. My mother bought me a case of CDs by the Band for Christmas.
