A Hallmark picture for sure !! As good as you maintain your tractor, you should have no worries about keeping it for 20 years or more. I, as stated before, am a registered tractor abuser and my B7100 is still running strong as ever and I purchased it in '82. However, my '99 B2400 just developed an HST issue at my son's house. But... I KNOW you will never treat yours as harshly as these have been over the years. Great test on the chains, great music, great views in the forest and an overall great video GP. Chains are a gamechanger !!
Good morning T! These chains are just about the best thing since sliced bread. Question for you - every once in a while I smell like a burning smell. It only lasts for a few seconds now and then lately, but any idea what that might be? I know that is a pretty general question but I don't recall smelling it before. Doesn't happen often but has happened maybe 5 or 6 times since the winter started. I can't tell where it is coming from but the smell passes me as I am driving along using the tractor. Just thought you might have an idea. Thanks my friend!
GP Outdoors well that is a bit of a general description but the first thing that would come to mind might be a slipping fan belt. But it’s just a guess. Now you didn’t set a ham sandwich wrapped in foil on the manifold to warm for lunch and forget it did you. Lol. Yes, it really is a thing.... sorry I can’t think of anything else unless a chipmunk or mouse slips up there to stay warm after you shut down for the day and sheds a little hair or drags up some grass clippings for bedding. Hope you find the resolution soon sir.

It’s rewarding to be able to maintain your property to your standards, not someone else. What helped me in my Kubota choice was the product quality along with the Kubota 0% finance for 6 years. You’re right GP with proper maintenance you should see 20+ years of work from that B2601. Great job on the video. Happy New Year to you and yours.

I have the same tractor, bucket, and blower setup. I don’t have the back blade or the spreader. I do the switchover of front bucket to blower only once per season because, alone, those implements are heavier than your video makes it look. I don’t want to do all that disconnection and connection each time I go out for a chore! One shortcut you make that I noticed is that you aren’t routing your hydraulic hoses through the curly-cue holders - it is a real chore to get all four of them twisted in when everything is stiff and iced up!
One cautionary note: keep an eye on the L-shaft that mounts the front tongue hitch to the underbody of the tractor. I’ve had the retainer clamp vibrate off twice in heavy snow. The first time, the entire L-shaft worked its way out and fell out on the road. Not so bad... Until I didn’t notice it and continued with some blowing. At the end of the session, I did a little backing up. What happened then? Well, there was nothing really keeping the tongue and the hitch in the proper position except the pressure of moving forward into snow. Moving backward, the two freely moved apart. The weight of the blower kept it in place while the tractor in reverse forced the tongue further and further away from the proper position. In less than seconds, the PTO drive shaft was yanked off its mounting and, because it was spinning at 3000 rpm, destroyed itself. Luckily nothing flew into anyone. Now, I replaced the L-shaft’s quick-release clamp (little C-shaped clip) with a shear bolt that happens to have just the right shaft diameter and I always check that that L-shaft and the front screw-down clamp are in good shape and well-seated.
Kudos to Kubota here: the local dealer replaced the entire PTO drive shaft, picked up the tractor, returned it, and did the labor all for no fee, all under warranty. They could have claimed it was Operator Error.
What would be great instead of the tongue hitch would be some bucket-adapter (like your pallet-fork adapter) where we’d quick-hitch the blower onto the bucket. Easy-on, easy-off, ability to raise the blower into a drift, etc. Perhaps one day Landpride will make it for us?
Despite the connection challenge, there’s no way I’d give up the front blower for having to drive backwards with a rear blower. As for a blower versus using the bucket or a blade? No way, either: the blower can throw the snow so far out of the way and never suffers the bite-down-hard into the ground risk with the bucket.
Good morning Lonnie. Thanks for the excellent comments. I agree with you totally. I only remove the loader once. Once I take the FEL off, it stays off until the spring. I found the exact same issue as you did with the L frame. Luckily I caught it early. I am very happy you didn't get injured - that had to be a little scary when it happened. And kudos to Kubota - great service for you. I got a great suggestion from another subscriber. I use a wire and wrap it around the handle of the tightening bolt and tie it to the ring on the side of the frame. It holds the bolt from loosening. Worked great all last winter - didn't move at all. I will put it on again today as I realized I forgot to wrap it. Thanks again - have a great week!
You're right about the life of a well maintained tractor that is put together well in the first place. Just look at all the old Jonny poppers that are still alive and well, some near 100 years and still working!

I drive a Jeep off road a lot with a search and rescue unit, we always put it in 4WD and then engage the Diff lockers if needed.

You hit on a lot of good points. I personally spent almost two years researching tractors. I forget where I heard this, but someone pointed out that a tractor does a lot of things “ok” versus having a bunch of separate machines that do one thing really good. A tractor is much more useful in my opinion. It’s well worth the investment. Cheers!

No doubt the chains are making a big difference. Beautiful scenery too! For those hills, while there is ample snow & ice, I would opt to engage 4WD instead of engaging the D-Lock. Maybe it is just me, but prior to engaging D Lock, I want to slow everything down, engine revs, mitigate stress on the drive train, ensure wheels aren't spinning while engaging etc. Kind of like when you engage the Tacoma into low 4.

Dad purchased a set of Trygg SMT tire chains for his little New Holland Boomer 20. I cut in a new driveway through the Forrest to his property for him and was extremely impressed on how much traction I managed to grab in 2wd only on frozen and iced over Forrest floors.
That actually brought a thought to me noggin while operating. If you experience any wheel hop while in two or MFWD with those chains on; stop immediately and try reconfigure yourself to get traction rather than spin the chained tires.
Our little tractor axles cant take too much torque shock and can snap like a twig under the right conditions. Especially in the cold.

When I developed my property (12 years ago) and put in a quarter mile long gravel driveway (complete with a concrete bridge over my creek), I didn't know anything about tractors and so decided to try and maintain the driveway with a Polaris Ranger UTV and some tow behind implements. It turned out to be the wrong set up for my large property. The tractor I eventually bought (6 years later) was definitely the way to go, and I can't imagine living out here without one any more. I love having tractors, they take labor out of doing work and make it fun. Happy New Year and best wishes for the year to come!

I'm getting new chains for my tractor as the old ones were worn out. I wouldn't even try to plow without chains. You did good to last as long as you did without them !!! I liked the intro music, it was only playing for a few seconds. Good idea using the rear blade with the snow thrower. It cleans up the small layer of snow left by the thrower.

Having destroyed my back due to injury sustained while serving the Armed Forces, what used to take me 2 hours to complete, takes a full day plus a week to recover.
In 18 years, I've gone through 2 high end Craftsman lawn tractors. If I had bought my Kubota back then, chances are I'd still have it.
When I decided to get my BX23S this past June, one of the most obnoxious question ever heard was, "What will you do with a tractor?"
Say what? They should have asked what CAN'T you do with a tractor. I have never been happier with a piece of equipment like my little tractor. Hell, EVEN my wife operates it and she is way safer than I am, let me tell ya. She is slow and meticulous whereas I am rougher than she is. I have made a few implements for it like the grapple forks, the pallet forks and soon, the Craftsman 52 inch snow blower will be mounted on the front using the skid steer adapter. And powered with 17HP motor. Yup. I love my tractor. Great channel by the way. Finally subscribed

Great video, I really needed this one. I am a Florida boy who is retiring to Vermont this coming year and I bought a Kubota B2650. Our property in Vermont is only 15 acres but it's on an unplowed dirt road so the tractor should stay busy!!

GP, in general terms, most of us will have a tractor investment that will still be a workable machine for our grandchildren. As these at least engine wise will last for 1000’s and 1000’s of hours before needing any major engine work. With good maintenance, the drive works of the tractor will last even longer. The one point I can not comment on would be the HST drive as I personally prefer a gear drive and shuttle shift.
So investment is the right way to think.
For most of us a used machine will also be a great option. The big issue for a used machine, is FEL included and if we want a front mounted attachment as price for those can get pricey if they can be found for older machines. FEL’s can be found on machines but even a used one demands a price still.
As for rear implements, those can generally be gotten for most any tractor.
The biggest thing in my opinion on buying used is you need to be able to do most of your own wrenching as you will likely not have the dealer support.

Good morning Coy - really great and helpful points for folks to consider. I have never used a shuttle shift but have heard of them. With the gear drive, are you able to shift gears on the fly? Wth this HST, I have to stop to change gears. Thanks again Coy. Have a Happy New Years!
GP Outdoors if the transmission is synchronized, you can shift gears on the fly. However that is not very common on compact tractors. If you change ranges, then you have stop is my understanding. My tractor has gears and ranges (for me a combination for 12 forward and 4 reverse gears) but are not synchronized. The shuttle shift works similar to your HST for forward to reverse. Mine does not have this either, but I have used one that did.
@@coypatton3160 Hey man...us Missouri boys need to stick together....You've made very good points in your comment. I have a 580CK Case with shuttle shift. You've described their operation well. I really like it on the backhoe as compared to a manual tranny and clutch. But on these smaller tractors, the HST (to me) is a big time game changer when in tight places requiring continual fwd and back operation. I just got the chance to level a tandem load of gravel and grade a driveway with an older Kubota with manual transmission and I just couldn't get into the swing of operating it both quickly and smoothly for the short duration of that job. The big aggravation was keeping the right hand on the loader control and removing the left hand to continually shift, leaving the steering wheel momentarily. BUT...if it had a shuttle, the situation would've been tremendously improved. It really boils down to what a fellow is comfortable with I guess.
Tractorman44 Personally, I find that with my non shuttle shift tranny, that feathering the clutch to get a bit of rear travel and forward movement works well for rock and dirt pile work. I will build up a bit of a ramp to assist in the rolling back motion.
Yes a shuttle shift or an hst would be better but you learn to work with what you have.

This was an interesting and thought provoking video for me. Unlike you, I am never in snow conditions being in middle Georgia. But am almost always on dirt and mud, woods, fields, and hills. I am sometimes using a boxblade but not often using ground engaging equipment.. Usually have a backhoe mounted.
I approached the traction issue a little different and would appreciate any feedback. I am in 4 wheel drive probably 90% of the time. I don't use chains but fully see your need for them. I use diff lock only when stuck say one wheel is up and not engaging the ground. That is the only time I use it. I really only go to 2 wheel drive when I enter Hi gear with the HST on pavement.
If I was plowing your driveway, I would stay in 4 wheel drive 100% of the time. Maybe I am off base. Please let me hear any thoughts. 👍
Good morning and thanks for the great comment and thoughts Greg! Before I got the chains this winter, I always used 4wd when driving on snowy or icy surfaces (and always when clearing snow) - very seldom on the gravel unless I was carrying a load downhill, and never on dry hard surfaces. I use the diff lock similar to yourself. I think in the video I used the diff lock twice to see how it would work to get up the hills (without resorting to 4wd since I was testing the traction without using 4wd). With the new chains, I am trying out different combinations to see how the tractor performs. There has been a lot of discussion and debate over the last two winters, on the channel, about whether to use 4wd with chains on the tires. My dealer strongly advised me not to use the 4wd if I put the chains on the rear and not to put chains on all 4 wheels (it has something to do with the 4wd because it changes the ratios of the tire sizes or something to that effect?), however many folks have suggested that as long as I am on a surface which will allow the wheels to "slip" then I should be fine. So I have been trying the different combinations out to see how the traction works. So far, now that I have the chains on, I really don't need the 4wd in the snow. Whereas before I got the chains, I had to use the 4wd and in some cases, I still was not able to climb the steep hill in icy conditions. The chains provide incredible traction - I am still surprised at the change. In the fall while in the rainy, deep mud, I was using just 4wd and also had times when I had the chains on. In the mud, the chains provided traction but steering was not as good as I would have in 4wd so I prefer 4wd for sure in the deep mud. So, in short, with the chains now, I don't have to use the 4wd, but when I have used it to clear the snow, I get even better traction - I can tell the difference. Sorry for the long answer but hope it has shed some light on the question. Have a good weekend and thanks again!

We seem to miss all that snow up to now! Not much snow on the ground yet! You made a mention about steering the tractor in corners. Have you tried the left/right brakes? They are meant for that. Then remember, as the chains give you more traction to go uphill, it also increases the effectiveness of the left/right braking for steering, without affecting much your capacity of pushing the snowblower. I would put it in 4WD before I used the dif lock. No reason not to be in 4WD on snow or ice if you need it.

Got 50° F down here in Pittsburgh PA. Flurried twice in November.Put the 'snow' plow on 3 weeks ago for the...' snow removal' !?
But hasnt been cold enough just rains, seems like spring. Now I need to get stone to cover the mud, THEN when it finally freezes...and the snow flies.....

When you lifted the blade you added the weight to the rear. Perhaps that is why you made the hills.

Absolutely beautiful up there GP! I hope it isn’t spoiled by this next storm coming through - down here in southeastern Ontario we are getting freezing rain overnight changing to rain tomorrow and then a bit of snow before it tails off. I hope it’s mostly snow for you, especially since the rest of the week looks quite mild (again). Any sleds running up there yet? The OFSC map is showing all trails closed but I can’t help but think there would be a few sled running around with the snow cover you now have. If we don’t start getting snow down here I may have to come up for a visit to get out snowmobiling - my thumb is getting itchy LOL!

My financial analysis to buy my tractor was, I want one, I just retired, and I can afford it! Best decision I ever made. I built my house, added on, built a garage, built a screened porch and of course added a tractor bay to my original garage. If I had this thing when I was younger? Who knows!

Did you ever find out about tire chains on the front wheels?
On those turns where the tractor wants to slide out while blowing snow, try raising the blower an inch (OK, 2.5 cm, I am a Yank stuck in the old system). The problem my Kubota has is that with the blower in float mode, there is not enough weight on the front wheels for turning traction.
If you are not operating in float mode, try switching to float just for the turns.
Final suggestion--I clear snow with a box scraper on the back. That is actually too much counterweight for the blower and my front end is always a bit too light for turning. So check how much that blade weighs. I am thinking about front wheel weights for my setup, but it may also exceed max weight for the machine. Perhaps I will drill a lot of holes in the box scraper, the way drag racers lighten their machines!

Gordon that's absolutely beautiful snow scenery I would think it would be best to leave it in 4-wheel drive the front tires would just spin on the snow or ice and still give you a traction and stopping power when you hit the brakes just a suggestion and no chains on the front

Take the boots and put them next to the wood stove / fireplace , Guy's wood furnace.
Once they are warm / hot ...... and dry.
Apply a coat of Sno Seal all season leather protection. OR Bees wax !
It will welt into the leather boot and make it waterproof .
I do it once a year and have had the same boots for 4 yrs now.
Use the boots every weekend ,

What scenery, the video is what I was looking for. I have a box blade and a front snow blower on my B2601,and am wondering why you don’t run the blower hoses under the front axel like in the manual? I tried once to route them and wasn't comfortable having them down there so close to the tire ( turning radius) so just decided to zip tie them to the grill guard - that way I can always see them and no worries about possibly falling into the tire path. Plus - there are too many hoses to fit in the rings. All the best to you and your family!

Good morning - great question. In those areas, I scrape into the middle from both sides and then come back down the middle with the blower to clean it up. I have to be careful not to pile too much along the sides throughout the winter (there's no where to push the snow). Cheers!

I have a similar driveway and I only hit it with the snowblower. I wonder why you use the scraper so much it seems like you’re digging up a lot of debris gravel and dirt that you then have to send through your snowblower.
I like to have a layer of snow that ends up freezing and then I just blow on top of that and I keep the Snow about a half inch thick and we drive all of our cars on it with no problem whatsoever. I even have two wheel delivery trucks, park driveway without any issue at all. So it seems like a lot of extra work and a bit of a mess to be dragging that road with the blade when you have a nice snowblower. Just hit it side to side with the blower and you’ll end up having steep sides that you build and you never end up having to do the blade at all.
Hey good evening Gary. Thanks for the good information about yours, and suggestions. I always start the winter off with the blower in the highest position (from the ground), until I know the ground has a good freeze into it. And I don't use the blade until it is good and frozen. But like you, I know how my driveway responds to different climate changes throughout the winter so once it is good and frozen, there are times it is best to scrape it down to the frozen surface. I can kind of tell when that is needed. But I agree with you, if I try to blade too early, or drop the blower down too early in the season, I end up snapping shear pins. Good afternoon Brian. That's a great question. I may not do as well as Wikipedia might describe it, but in short, back in the 1800's and early 1900's, the government parcelled off land in 100 acre parcels and gave the land to people if they agreed to farm it. In order to provide those families access to their 100 acre parcels, the government built roads between the parcels (called Concession Roads). Surprisingly, after all these years, most street signs still label them a "Concession Road #X", but in many places, the municipality has updated some of them with an actual 'name'. However, in my case, the concession road has an actual road name now, but in order to find my place on a GPS system, if I type in the road's name, the GPS won't find it but if I type in the Concession Road number, it finds it no problem. Hope that explains it ok. Cheers!

Morning BBD. I think it depends on the terrain or geography of what you have there I think. The only reason I got them was because of the big inclines and hills - very tough in the ice winter, even with 4wd. I might offer you may want to try it without them (I went two full winters with no chains) and if you find too many times you are without traction etc, then maybe get some for the rear (your dealer can best advise I think). Fantastic video and scenery!!! I noticed what looks like a truckers turnbuckle in the middle of your loader bucket when the forks were attached. Is that a special one or is it modified? Makes sense to help support the middle when the forks are attached! Oh btw, are you using any skid shoes on your rear blade?

Can you leave the snow blower attachment on tractor with loader on
Good day Larry. Unfortunately not. It has a sub frame and the loader will not work with the subframe connected which is unfortunate. Once I remove the FEL, it pretty much will have to stay off the tractor till spring. But with such a long driveway, plowing wasn't an option. But boy, it sure blows the snow a long distance. Kubota should be giving you a commission. I bought my 2601 with grapple, mower deck, box blade, rear blade, and carry all biased on your informative videos. Thanks for all you do. Cost me 25k, but I am sure it is money well spent. Only regret is getting a belly mower and not a 3 point finish mower.

This may be a stupid question, but why do you use both a blower and a blade? Won't one or the other suffice? Is it just matter of more implements is better?
Good day BG! That is a really good question. They each have a specific purpose. In my case, I can't plow the driveway as it is too long and there is nowhere to "push" the snow. The forest is tight to the edges of the driveway. So when I get any accumulation of snow, I use the blower in order to shoot the snow off into the forest and away from the driveway. Keeps the driveway wide. However, the blower can't "scrape" the driveway - the skid shoes run on top of whatever hard surface is under it, which over time is in fact inches of hard snow that has built up. So for large amounts of snow, the blower does it's job. The blade on the other hand, is needed for scraping the driveway. Temperature dependant most of the time, If I knew we are getting warm weather, I will often scrape the driveway down to minimize the amount of snow that will turn to slush and then possible freeze into ice thereafter. Often you will see I blade into the middle and then run the blower down to clear it into the forest. Sometimes I will blade to the sides but not often. There are other reasons but that hopefully provides a few examples to explain it. If I had a driveway that had lots of room to the sides, then I would have purchased a front plow instead of the blower. Hope that helps a bit. Have a great New Years!

I am pretty fortunate - I always have a spare can and I use a "stop spout" which works really great - about $10.00 at princess Auto. But generally, I fill up at Guy's place. He has a huge diesel tank and so I normally fill up at his place. Cheers Erick!
