Gord, I think there's a third part of this test. By leaving more snow and ice means more water in the spring so your road may end up muddier than in years past. Worth noting in a few weeks.

hello GP, I have a bx23s of kubota and when come the rain or ice. I pass in my path of 1 km long, a serrated blade an hour or hour before and during the transfaire from rain to snow. this makes it a little rougher and the snow sticks to the path. it's less slippery. keep up the good work. you teach me a lot. ( excuse my English I am a french speaker of Québec)

GP, yep I did say....don't do it. Well, you did it anyway 😅. I bet you could feel a little slippage at places but you faired well. We had snow/ice for 1 day only and it melted by noon. It was fun to see. No work was involved. We did have ice patches in the garage drive walk way. My wife and I took it slowly while taking baby steps to our vehicles. Other than that, no severe weather which is fine with me. Guy definitely shared some profound snow worthy advice. I used to deal with ice & snow regularly in Pennsylvania, and when I was stationed in Worcester, Mass. The ice and snow created some bad pot holes so it was really bad when everything melted. The roads looked like a war zone. Enjoyed a full-watch. Take care my friend and say hey to Guy. Don 👍🏽🙂

By the way. You should check with the place where you purchased your spreader. They may have a shield that will keep the spread down.
I never doubt the chains ability...especially your deluxe set !! My old worn out ones make a world of difference in ice or mud with my much older two wheel drive antiques...(-:

Hello GP. I hate ice. I have found for my driveway, if I clean up the snow right at sunrise, I can clean it enough so the sun melts the ice . But when there is not sun, the ice stays. We are so lucky to have the tools to make our property safe.

Wow, you are really getting some wild winter weather in Canada. Your chains really work great. I haven't needed to put on my chains for 2 yrs now. The turf tires on my B2601 are working great in the snow. But winter is not over yet here in northern Wisconsin, freezing rain is forecasted for this weekend. Great videos GP!

Nice! I was expecting you to go down when I saw you put your foot on the glare ice in the begging to get into your tractor! You must have “chains” on your boots as well! Part of my driveway near the house is asphalt, no chains there… The town plows all the way up to the barn as it is a public road. Used the loader for the first time to take the foot of snow off, did not venture far from the driveway as the rear tires would spin…. I have R14 tires coming, hopefully they will help! We shall see!
Chains make a world of difference for sure. My combine plow pushes a lot of snow with its 12 foot blade, but without those chains on those big front wheels, it just spins her wheels. More snow for us in Saskatchewan...woo hoo snow day!!!. Great video as always and stay warm out there and be safe.
Looks like a lake-effect snow squall. For us they drift over from Lake Michigan and wreak havoc on our east-west freeways. Glad the chains are working well for you!

Thanks for the video. I have the same conditions here, with rain followed by cold, then snow. My driveway was pretty much a luge run from the house to the concession road. What I did, was before it froze up, I walked along the drive (with crampons) and just flicked some snow onto the drive from the side bank. As it froze, it was enough of an uneven surface that I was able to drive in and out.
Whenever there is any slush on the driveway, I too drive back and forth to leave tire tracks in the slush to provide an uneven surface. It works well if I use the ATV with its aggressive tires.
The first snow of the season I clear it with the bucket of the tractor, angled slightly upwards from level, so that I clear off or push down any high spots that I missed with the box blade, or ruts left over from the fall. I start the season with the skid shoes on the blower set for maximum clearance, and once the ground freezes and I have a base, I drop them down to the middle setting. That has worked well this winter with the couple of thaws that we've had to leave a bit of snow behind that binds with the ice below during sunny days. It has kept my sand use down to an absolute minimum.
I envy your chains. My Kubota does not have the side clearance for chains, and Kubota does not have a wheel spacer option (not recommended) for my tractor. I do have a bag of screw-in studs ready to be installed, but have to admit that even on the one really steep section of my driveway, I haven't needed them yet.
Your videos have really helped accelerate my path along the learning curve of being a first time tractor owner. Thanks!
I’ve got ice on my driveway too, & now looking into the necessity of ice biter chains, because without them my LX2610 cab model becomes almost useless.

Great job Gord, sure do like the way those chains work too. I had to run chains on all four wheels on a lot of occasions while living in Colorado and I had that style of chains on the rear axle and the standard tire chains on the from wheels. They were really handy on the four wheel drive pickup truck we had. Always brought me home . Those chains will help break up the ice too when the weather warms. I experienced the same conditions here in Kawatha Lakes. With shear ice underneath snow I agree let the snow settle and ahere to the ice. I often drive my Tacoma over the snow to pack it down. My blower shoes are also set in the middle position so a little snow is left on the driveway. You asked me a while ago to comment on the traction of the R14 tires. I only have chains on the front tires. I am quite happy with the R14 tires but I think they spin quite easily in the snow as soon as you try to do something like pulling a frozen log off the pile. I have been using my winch to free the frozen logs. Once loose the tractor can pull them 2 at a time without any problems. Thanks again for your great video.

I’ve had my feet go out from under me in those conditions, flat on my back, feet in the air, and a scary concussion to the back of my head, when my head slammed into the cement under it!!! I now despise ice, especially hidden ice, that catches you off guard!
The last patch of hidden ice I encountered, I did the running in place routine attempting to get my feet back under me, & when that failed, I quickly bent my knees to lessen the coming impact, & narrowly escaped another impact to the back of the head!😖

Nice video, those chains great, I have the same style chains and I use turnbuckles on the side instead of shock cords, turnbuckles worked great
Good to see you're sticking with your guns on running with those flashing hazards! Real easy to be spotted especially in the bush! On our new Kioti CS2220, I run the flashers when I'm snowblowing as well, especially when I'm near the thru road. My Dad asked why I have them on all the time, and I tell him Uncle GP taught me well so now I'm running as safely and as visibly as I can be!
I gotta get me a set of tire chains as well, but for the winter so far here in Manitoba, 4WD paired with Diff lock has been working like a champ. I guess we'll see.

My new home in Western New York has a long gravel driveway and we were dealing with very similar conditions to yours - thaw and rain followed by a hard freeze and snowfall over the ice. So I appreciate any advice that will help keep the driveway passable in situations like this!

you can get even more traction an less wear on your tires, if you loosen the chains a little more. The tractor will get more comfortable too drive also. Greatings from Norway:)

@@kenfromvt.5136 depending on how fast your machine is going and on the type of chains. Tractor chains should float on the tire, and be so lose that you could put your fist between the cross and sidelinks.

Man you have a nice set-up for maintaining your winter road. I presume you were in 4WD. If you were in 2WD, then I'm really impressed. I've found that a little snow on top of ice really helps with traction, especially if "pressed" into the ice. Very true statement that there is always something new to learn about one's property and the maintenance thereof. Another great video on subject matter and camera shots. Steve from Minnesota
I have a 2WD Kubota L2501F that I use to maintain my road with a pull type snowblower. I have chains similar to what GP uses in the video and I never have trouble even when I'm blowing up my big hill. GP has a video where he does a comparison blowing snow in 2WD vs 4WD, there's not a big difference in performance if you already have studded chains.

Ditto on the ice, Gord. I've got to get some of those chains! BTW, where do you store the sand for your spreader? If it's outside it may be hard to find by mid-winter!
Mt driveway is ice-covered also. I finally bought chains, and I got a box blade. I am going to score up the ice with the tynes , then lay down sand salt mixed with rock salt. We'll see what that does. We don't drive my wifes' car down to the house, just my truck which has 4 wheel lock. Tough year for sure.
Hi.. the blower I had was different from yours.. yours is built like a rear one.. I never had any trouble with it but I think yours would transfer more power to the first and second stage..thanks for the video.. again you brought back old memories bud!!
Great video shots Gord, I hope your viewers know how long it takes to set up multiple cameras and then edit. It's worth reminding all that tire chains on the rear of the Kubota require the installation of wheel spacers which is no small job for a DIY owner.

If you have a few inches of snow on ice and warmer temperatures are predicted, you are a lot better off clearing it while it is still cold. Once it approaches freezing, the snow lowers the friction coefficient so much that you start to spin and slide. It is supposed to warm up quite a bit this weekend, it will be interesting to see the mess we end up with.

Very cool GP. You have snow and we have inches and inches of rain with floods. I think I would like to swap. Also I just bought a flail mower for my L 3250, the only this is it is a Kioti brand very good value.. L 3250 is a 40 hp with 32 hp at the pto , I have the tractor set up on the narrowest width so went for a 48” cut for getting around large trees.🇦🇺 p.s. can I do a deal on a key ring?

Hi Randy. I don't but the website is tirechainsrequired dot com. If you get the long tire size number off the sidewall of your tire and go on the site , you can find the size that fits your tires properly. I think the man's name there was Bill ,if you need to call him. Hope that helps

Hi GP, Would you ever consider, or did you ever feel you need, or do you have the clearance to install chains on the front tires?
Morning John. I have a few times - and also considered studs to screw into the front tires. I am still kind of hesitant. On the B2601 I could not put chains because of the clearance when you turn the tires and not sure whether I have much more now. I haven't decided yet but I get reasonable traction even if I have to lift the blower sometimes on some corners. The rear tire chains give me great control now on the hills.
