  • Kubota LX2610 compact tractor. First time taking the Cab Tractor deep in the forest. Grapple. Hauling Ash logs for firewood. Outdoor channel.
Got the parts I needed to get my Root Rake Grapple back in action! Time to head off the beaten trail in the forest and go deep, for Ash hardwood fire wood logs. Glass cab. Soft, uneven mulch on the forest floor. Heavy hardwood Ash logs. Let's do this! Come along with me today as I take the Kubota LX2610 Cab compact tractor on it's first venture into the forest. Here at the cottage, in the outdoors. Cheers!

Since I got my log winch on my L3200 I'll drag whole trees if I can get them to move. The only thing I use the bucket for is front counterweight. I'll get as much in the bucket as I can to keep the front end on the ground. It helps but I'm always break steering. I put logging chains on the rear, expensive but totally worth it. Pulls soo much better. I put doubled cross link front chains on as well. Definitely helps when backing up. Winch skidding increased the yield by x5. Don't think I could go back to arching or small rough terrain trailer hauling. Just to easy to throw on a chain choker and pull the cord. Dry ground is nice but frozen ground or a small snow fall really makes logs slide nice.

@@GPOutdoors I'm definitely liking your cab. I think I'm going to go for a larger 4000 series with a cab. FABULOUS advice regarding the open station first to get the feel of machinery in terrain. New users would be well served to heed this wisdom.
It's getting to be so the only difference between your outfit and a well-equiped mid scale firewood contractor is the pressure from profit and customers. I suspect you'll start finding you have more firewood than you and Guy know what to do with!
When bucking and grappling logs, I prefer to have a firewood length marking tool on my saw (I like ACC-U-MARK but there are so many and people fight over what the best one is). I pre-mark logs out at a certain number of pieces and buck them all the same. This aids maneuvering, weight managment, stacking, and processing. When it's time to block them up, there are no shorts!

The worst part about the cab in the woods is the mirrors. I have not had many problems clearing my property with the cab other than the mirrors. The brush is always pushing the mirrors back into the door (I even broke one mirror). The mirrors are nice for snow blowing, but you are better off removing them for going out in the woods.
I am sure you will really enjoy the cab this winter. It is so much better snow blowing. After about 30 years in an open station blowing snow, the cab was a very welcome change that I never regretted. Enjoy.

Pulling logs lengthwise (7:49 of video) is how the grapple teeth get bent. The length of log has the leverage to bend teeth when your tractor turns pulling the log out. A log is a "BIG wood pry bar"

    Good morning GP.
You did alright in the woods with the cab..
I would definitely chain out a lot more. I am more chicken then you.. you seemed surprised that you pulled out the top with no problems.
I usually pull all mine out in full tree length.. and that is with my 1025r.. ( the Green tractor) hahaha
I will saw one time this year I did cut a 36 inch red oak and I was having a hard time with it so I went and got the B2650 and hooked on.. It did the trick.. But it has loaded rear tires. That's what made the difference. There is only 1 horsepower different between them. So with that being said you might want to check into that for yours. With the chains and them being loaded I think blowing your driveway and out in the woods you would see a huge difference.
    Just my opinion..
    Well I am done rambling.
Have a great rest of your weekend.
Stay safe and always be kind.
    Cheers.
Oh one more thing.. for the first time I wore hearing protection cutting yesterday and I am not sure I like it..
I like hearing how my saw is working and it felt like I was not able to control my saw as well.. oh well.. but that's another discussion all together. Hahahahah

Morning GP. I'm still looking for my first tractor. I have 3 dealers near me: Green, Orange, and Red. Based on online build prices, I plan on getting either a BX23s, or Massey GC1725MB, both with backhoe. The small size will be able to get around tight areas. Plus, it's the right price range. Get the mistakes out on the first, cheapest open station tractor. So, after upgrading to a larger tractor with a cab, I wont have to worry as much about breaking the expensive stuff.

I was once following a semi hauling a load of logs. He got to a spot where the old 2 lane road turned into a new 4 lane highway. When he went into the bend of maybe 20 degrees to the left, he was one pound too top heavy and 1 mph too fast. Over she went! The driver hopped out okay so I told him that I was right behind him watching in slow motion. BTW, a ROPS won't always save you. Especially in the woods. But that cab will probably help if you do tip it over.

Really enjoyed your video and the insight on filling in the low soft spot with the scrap timber. I will definitely keep that one in mind next time I'm in the forest! Wanted to give you a heads up from a fellow cab tractor owner. Just this weekend I was cutting some fields and while driving along the edge a side mirror caught a tree branch that was hanging out past the rest, long story short, the mirror folded up quickly. They're spring loaded, to prevent breaking I assume, and come in quickly and forcefully once folded past about half way. It was lucky the side glass didn't break! Just wanted to share and let you know it happens pretty quickly if they get hung on anything. I still regularly use my tractor in the woods but who would have thought I'd have an issue with the cab cutting fields after all that! Lol

      @GPOutdoors  Před 3 lety

Morning TA. Yes it is the 60" light duty. It's a little heavier than most other similar grapples (commercial steel) but I have no complaints - and for what I lift and do here, it has never been an issue with capacity. The only thing I would offer is to keep lots of ballast on the back when lifting the logs. I also have learned to buck the logs to around 8 feet at the most so I don't get that sideways force or sway on the loader arms. Plus it is easier to weave through the forest and down the trails when the log length is more manageable. I did a video on the grapple around last October. Good luck and all the best!
