Now 21 years and 295, 000 miles I'm still exploring Colorado with it carrying a pop up camper, always has worked pulling or hauling something. Religiously maintained,

Definitely. These trucks are destined to be sought after for MANY years as people realize what great pieces of machinery they are. My personal opinion, GM broke the mold with the GMT-400 and 800 series trucks.
GMT400 and GMT800 were just built different. They last, they're comfortable and they don't have too many electronics that turn into gremlins after they wear out. Loved each one I've had.

Yes, even though they're meant to work hard, it's always puzzling to see how poorly people treat their vehicles sometimes.
About 6 years ago, I bought a mint condition 2001 8.1 2500HD w/ Allison 5 speed. It had 79,000 miles on it. I paid $12.700.00 . I thought I paid too much, but the truck was just about perfect and I fell in love with it. LT trim fully loaded. I realize now that it was a great price. After 40,000 miles I have no regrets. I love my truck! The 12MPG is worth every penny.

I have a 2001, 2500 HD 8.1 250,000 miles. Never had any problem except motor mounts. I pull a 3400 lb tri axle trailer with 19,000 excavator. Never overheated. Loves gas stations... great truck.

I have an 02 CC 2500hd with the ally and 8.1.. 275k and is still the daily work rig. Takes a quart of oil every 700mi or so and doesn't mind a gas station but those trucks are built to last!
That is the truth. Most of the reason why they still have such a high resale value. Power and enough luxury to use as a daily driver for years and years👍.
Most of the time replacing the intake gasket will correct the oil consumption.

I really enjoyed the GM truck videos. These trucks are well made and I believe they will last a lifetime with good regular and scheduled maintenance. I bought my work truck new in 2004 , regular cab GMC K 2500 HD , has 600,000 miles , looks good , runs great, tight, quiet , reliable a real workhorse. I have this rig from now on. I’m not good with all the complicated gadgets on these newer trucks and they are way too tall and expensive. I think the great value is in these older trucks. American Iron all the way! These are the last generation of near bulletproof trucks that for many become forever vehicles. I know I'm in that boat with mine. I'll have more 8.1 videos out shortly.
My 2002 GMC 2500hd has 330,000 miles and still going strong. No major problems just maintenance.

I worked in construction and we beat the snot out of our trucks and the only dents you'll find is inside the bed itself. We never broke the windows or even tore the seats. The only way to damage a truck like this is to do it on purpose. This is amazing!

I have a 2001 8.1. I have had to replace a few things like calipers, brake lines, a power steering cooler, stuff that rusts away after 20 years... , but the drive train is rock solid and drives like the one my dad bought new in '06.
I remember thinking how nice the truck was compared to any other vehicle we had before. It was all leather interior, with heated seats (which was the new hotness back then) and was just super comfortable and torquey. It never gave us any trouble (save for trying to prevent rust on the frame) and I towed a heavy gooseneck horse trailer with it pretty regularly. Unfortunately, my dad sold it but I never forgot how good that truck was and back in 2018, I found one with a rust-proofed frame (mostly) that looked almost new. I paid a pretty penny for it, considering its age but that price was a small fraction of price I'd have to pay to get a comparably capable modern truck. It's also hard to find this era truck in the north east that hasn't been completely consumed by rust too.
My buddy bought a Ford Raptor and thought it was bad ass until I showed him the difference in towing capacities. Raptors are nice trucks for sure but that 496 + Allison combo is stout and can really put down some torque with just small bit of boost. NA, the thing will last forever and if you boost them, you won't need too much to get diesel torque and pretty awesome HP. For the price, it really can't be beat, even if it's a fuel hog. I could buy a small fleet of these trucks for what my buddy paid for his 22 Raptor...
Yep, when you compare the price of buying an 8.1 rig versus breaking the bank to buy a new truck, it's the 8.1/Allison for the win. I'll keep mine til the bitter end😁.

I have an 01 Suburban LT 496 with 255k miles. After 80k miles of towing 6000+ lbs the stock 4l80e barely starting giving out. More than pleased owning it since '16. Has a blackbear performance tune on it. Love this truck. Also have an 02 suburban with 5.3 in it. Total difference drivetrains. Love em both. Chevy ftw
Great testimonial. Like you, I have complete faith in the last generation of BBC engines and consider them lifetime trucks. I just got back from an 1100-mile trip towing a 5000 lb 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado for a total weight of around 14000 lbs between truck, trailer, and car. I could barely feel it behind me and still managed to complete the trip in a reasonable amount of time.

It is really sad to see trucks get abused like this and sad to say but alot of guys who are starting a bussiness have good luck of finding the best looking one owner trucks at a great deal and dont care but to make money with them and just dont value these work horses like the should because its "JUST A WORK TRUCK!" I just saved a 2001 GMC extended cab 4wd dually with the 8.1/Allison combo from getting scrapped. The body is more abused than this one on your video but all powertrain is still there. The guy tells me "it has alot of miles (over 400k) and it has a ticking noise on one of the heads"...so I just Lol inside my head and thinking " this man doesn't know how many miles are on my 2002😂" so my plan is to make it look beautiful again and fix the problem it has and add it to my collection. These GM Big Block trucks are very worth saving and about the front bumpers with the holes in it is true! I really admire all the info you know about these trucks because it is rare someone knows all these details you and I know. Not even the salesmen that sold these trucks back in those years 2001-2006 & 2007 Classic knew what they had in the lots. I used to go to the GMC dealers and test drive them brand new but couldn't afford one.lol. so I would study the heck out of these beauties and compare them all to see the differences and details thru out those years. I was 16-21 years old thru out those years and at the age of 22 I bought my 2002 GMC dually that I drive everyday ever since😍 I'm glad you are saving them too and great video as always👍be safe mi amigo and lets keep on Big Blockin!💪💪💪
Galdino, thanks for the kind words. I know exactly what you mean. These trucks sometimes fall into the hands of people that don't understand the mechanicals and end up destroying them in the process. The funny part is that unless your using them to make money with heavy hauling or big loads, you'll go broke trying to keep them fueled up🤣. Like you, I believe these trucks will continue to be highly sought after for many years to come as more and more people realize how reliable and capable they are.
Just bought a 2001 crewcab shortbox with the 8.1l/Allison. It only has 196,000 kms on it anf needs some TLC, as the previous owner thought he was mechanically inclined and wasn’t. I have already started ordering parts to get it fixed up. Gonna be an overlander/hauling rig.
Yep, it's truly a testament to their durability to still be in use as over the road trucks. As long as the body doesn't rust away around the drivetrain, they're forever trucks👍
@@VetteSource At one time the truck was well taken care of. Everything underneath has been coated in heavy duty paint. Minimal rust. The body is 99% solid as well. Quite a few dents, but only a small patch of rust on one of the cab corners.
I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado with 8.1 engine and Allison bought it with 73000 on it now I have 136000 on it my camping truck I have owned it for 17 years just like new still going strong. I won't trade it for anything.

Thanks for posting 8.1 videos!! owned 2001 hd crew chevy new from factory 115,000 miles runs like a champ, has always burned a little bit of oil but, otherwise a home run. The only trouble was 10 years into the truck it started stalling sporadically, Then wouldn't retstart for a few minutes,(MIDDLE OF AND INTERSECTION, FREEWAY, TRAFFIC JAM) then would start and be fine, no check engine. HIGHLY ANNOYING AND DANGEROUS

Hey Frank, with the HD trucks I haven't seen anything better than the hydroboost system at slowing these trucks down in a timely manner, especially if they're loaded down. I'll have to do some checking and see if the aftermarket offers anything. Thanks for the feedback, I'll have some more videos on this one soon.

what is the black box mystery i must have missed the video but you have wondering im having some problems and im stumped on where to start looking i changed my shifter console i dont know what went wrong but noe i hit the key and no crank and the dash lihts fade and i have a ticking sound coming from under the right side of the dash i dont know where to start any help would be great

Would be nice to see u save it. I use to own 2 8.1 trucks. I sold one recently. It was an 03 ext cab sb 4wd. Run like a scalded dog 🐕. I still got an 03 dually 4wd with a dump bed. Only 115k miles. They are good trucks and GM best kept secret. Im a Duramax guy but like my 8.1s
Yep, I have the utmost respect for the early Duramx trucks, but these 8.1's were like the worst kept secret in the world. Once owners got a taste of how strong and reliable they were, they developed a cult following.
Somehow, I've managed to collect 4 of these 8.1 trucks - this 01 Ext Cab, an 02 Crew Dually, an 04 Crew Long Bed Single Rear Wheel, and the 04 Yukon XL. My goal is to have all of them completed over the next year or two, time permitting, and I will definitely keep posting videos on my progress.
I have a 2006 8.1/ Allison ext cab SLT with 37,000 original miles on it. I only use it to plow snow, trailer fishing gear and the occasional trip to Anchorage.
Man, I'd love to have one of those to run on the open roads of Alaska. Beautiful country up there, I need to get back one day👍.

I have a couple 2006 Silverados that I got to haul scrap metal with. Ones a 1500 5.3 that's a rust bucket and the one I got recently is a 2500 6.0 8 ft with nearly 300k on it. It's not very rusty which is impressive since I'm in NY. Yes, I'm tough on the trucks throwing metal in the back and all but I also maintain them really well. I try my best to take care of them but at the end of the day they are cheap trucks and they were bought to make me money
For sure, you guys that run the scrap businesses are the definition of working your trucks as they were intended. The 5.3 and 6.0 trucks are tailor-made for that kind of work. The thing that struck me about this truck was that an 8.1 is severe overkill as a local scrap hauler, especially since this one is a highly desirable body style, and will just about pull houses off their foundations😁.

That frame looks pretty clean I would put another 8.1 into it from a truck with a bad frame to at least keep it out of the crusher and anyways I am going to be putting a 8.1 from a suburban 2500 that is rusted out in every way bad frame and body but a low mileage engine into my Silverado 4.3 with a high mileage engine but rust free

@@VetteSource the 4l8X trucks use a detuned 8.1 supposedly because the 8.1 will eat the 4l8 series of transmissions I am not buying that since they put those behind the duramax engines so ill most likely remove the torque limiter people have reported supposedly getting 14-15mpg with a 8.1 in a half ton if this holds true then its a good alternative to the LS engine my frame can legally tow 9,000 if it has the 4.8 either way I dont think any of the 1500 ls engines will hold up well towing that especially if your up in the mountains like I am I have a zf6 Duramax but it is temporarily retired due to frame rot but it has such low millage only 97,000 but it towed great but I want to frame swap it because the body is in great shape and well low mileage drive train but either way a 8.1 in a half ton is going to be fun ill own a 496 ss essentially and no one will suspect a thing either way exciting projects I just wish I could find a extended cab 8ft bed frame

Been looking for original alternator, mechanic switched mine yrs ago. Notice the alternator still laying there. Message me if we can arrange something. I have 02 silverado 2500hd 8.1L. I'm sure i can get it rebuilt. Thnxs Mike from new jersey. Oh , is it a 105 or 130 amp
Hey Mike, the 105 or 130 amp alternator depended on options or whether it had dual batteries if I am remembering correctly. Unfortunately I'm going to use this one in my rebuild, but I'll dig around and see if I can find another original one out there. I'll let you know👍.

Hey buddy, good deal. Definitely one of those "throw the microphone down and walk off the stage" trucks. It will last you for many years. With that being said, there are very few crate engines left out there to find at this point. I saw one a few months back, and it was snapped up in a an hour by a company that needed it for their industrial generator. These have many applications outside of just in the trucks, so they can be tricky to source. I would check FB Marketplace, CL, or even your local wrecking yards to see what's out there. That's how I found my marine crate 8.1 on CL awhile back.

The engine has a pretty good knock with low oil pressure. Trying to decide my next move. What’s your thoughts on the engines from like AutoZone and stuff? They have 8.1 for sale that fit?

It may not have been the owner that tore the truck up, it may have been his employees. Over the years I have fired 4 people because of abusing my trucks and other equipment. After so much abuse it is now worth putting money into it. I just keep the old truck and use it as a work truck . Now I absolutely do not let nobody working for me drive my good trucks.
Yep, that's a good point. Seems like some employees will abuse the trucks on purpose since they don't have to deal with the consequences of their actions. It would be a much different scenario if it was something they had to invest money into.
Its synthetic oil or full synthetic lighter than regular 5w30, and can't find regular oils, most of them are synthetics,???
Yep, the synthetic is thinner and has less viscosity than the old school oil, that's why you can't use it in the older engines. You'll need to find some of the specialty oil that isn't normally stocked on the shelves of your local auto parts store to get the viscosity you're looking for.
@@VetteSource I been reading a lot of comments that they are using 15w40 on the 8.1
Instead of the 5w30 n they haven't got any issues the only thing is that alot of the oils are now synthetics n even the 15w40 are synthetics too ,should I try use 15w40 or go with 10w30 ,some say once u use higher weight can go back to lower viscosity weight??
You know, the 8.1 is designed to run on synthetic oil, so I don't think it will hurt unless you're dealing with an excessive oil consumption problem.
I'd kill to have that body..I got 1 recently for 1200$ runs but was going into limp mode so they thought the allison trans was junk but ended up being the turbine speed sensor...truck was a salt/plow truck and they just let it sit for a year without cleaning it up...frame is getting patched infront of the leaf springs eventually..160k mile crew cab long bed non dually...such a shame..
Hey David, sounds like a good truck that you can get back on the road without too much trouble. I do like the crew/long bed trucks. Lots of room for passengers and cargo. Once I get this one back up, I'll see how I like using it as a daily work truck.
I got a 01 Silverado 2500hd with the Allison as well. When your trans started acting up did the gear selector in the dash just blink when you tried to put it in gear. I have no forward or reverse gears in mine at the moment. It was my grandfathers truck and he recently passed away which is how I got the truck

Wow… that’s MY truck… except compared to it, mine is in pristine condition with under 120k miles on it. I was checking the value last year when I was thinking about replacing it and the estimate I arrived at was around $10k. With used vehicle prices fluctuating wildly are you thinking it’s worth more than $10k? If the value is much greater then I would vote to buy, if much less then I don’t think it would be worth the time and effort.
Hey Rusty, you're correct about the valuations of late. All over the map and with a level of insanity I haven't seen before.
However, with this series of GM trucks I personally feel the utility value is far greater than any potential dollar value. They were designed to last forever, even as daily drivers, and with the monster killer 8.1 drivetrain will pretty much execute any job you throw at it.
The best thing about rebuilding a truck like this is because so many of them were made replacement parts are dirt cheap. Once I swing back around to it, I'll probably do a cost breakdown to show you guys what all is involved.
You must not be in california. Your exact truck the way it is would fetch around 13-15k here no questions asked
I'm sure it would. Probably not an easy truck to find out there. Here in Texas they're fairly uncommon, but you can still find them if you look around hard enough.
hey me again lol these vehicles were equipped with Dex cool that probably wasn't a k seal whoopsie what happens when you mix dex coool and green antifreeze it coagulates and blocks everything off like a blood clot what i think happened they wrecked it lost antifreeze put green in then it started getting hot and boiled over then they dumped straight water in it on the side of the road trail what have it and it froze cracked the block another thing gm will do is they will use the head gasket itself to restrict flow in certain arias to increase flow in others and maintain a unform heat on the engine that small hole you showed looks like thats the case good way to tell is take a knife to it see if there is head gasket under the rust staining i know you have a marine engine the water jackets in marine engine were actually coated in special goo to make it rust retardant lined water jacket
It's possible, but we don't freeze very often down here in Houston😁. One thing I noticed that at some point in the past the incorrect non HD front bumper was installed on the truck, which didn't help with cooling the monster 8.1 either. Regardless, they managed to destroy an engine that is almost indestructible, so they accomplished something😂.
@@VetteSource a super common dumb mod is to plug the vents with small led light bars cracks like that are not a common sight at all the number one killer of 8.1 is the internal pvc eating all the oil on a 5 hour towing trip you can run a healthy 8.1 out of oil. and in 5k miles easy normal use if you never check it you might be able to find gm old service bulletin that discussed oil consumption norms the best thing you can do imo is find a high film strength oil that does not easily splash the lower of the intake i run moboil 0-40 European car formula had around1100ppm of zink if memory serves the only oil higher by moboil was turbo diesel truck oil and it was not by much

On the 8.1 engine requiring the 5w30 regular oil I changed the oil twice with the 5w30 synthetic but all of sudden it started making a ticking noise on the right front side of the block like if the fan was hitting the shroud around .or the transmission brake is on it runs fine after it gets going but I'm afraid it might be the lifter that thicking noise its worrying me , can anyone give some advice what to check or look out for it has little over 266000 miles on it,.its synthetic oil lighter than regular 5w30????
@@juancontre5858 put regular oil in it. 15w40. Between being thicker, and being with that motor has probably already run.... See if your tick clears up. After owning over 60 Chevrolet V8 and 6 cylinders I don't put 5 30 in anything domestic, as I feel it's too thin. Through the 90s GM had a bunch of recalls and warranty work for 350 small blocks, From advertising 5 30, Then cooking bearings. I always ran 20w50 In conventional motors. The only time I pay attention to actual engine oil weights is imports.
Slightly thicker is better.
A bottle of lucas oil treatment, swapped for a quart of oil, never hurt, either. All of my vehicles are over 225k.

@@homerepairguy1 ok thanks even though I might not find the regular oil most auto parts only selling the synthetic oil would it be just fine it's an 2001 3500 8.1 engine gas it has little over266000 miles on it I hardly ever when over 3000 miles between oil changes a few times I might had let go over 6500 but other than that its been pretty good to me ,replaced radiator twice brakes twice in front ,front end axles n other suspension parts normal wear m tear water pump n smog pump, the only bad part is in 2020 they stole it n took cats m hood , was able to recover it withing few our otherwise I probably never found it as it has bad past year they try to steal it twice within about 6 months in between time. It sucks you work hard to get what u like n want then some assholes just want to steal it from you, bad part they always do it between 1230 n 4am some had die from stealing, don't wish bad things but carma its bitch .

WHAT A SHAME..THOSE 496 BIG BLOCKS WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE ALOT OF THE SAME ENGINEERING UPGRADES THAT MADE ITS WAY TO THE LS FROM THE OLDER DESIGN SBC/BBC SPECIFICALLY IN THE HEAD AND BLOCK DESIGN. I HAVENT LOOKED AT IT MYSELF BUT SEEMS LIKE A PROMISING MOTOR THAT WAS QUIETLY OVERSHADOWED BY THE DURAMAX AND POPULARITY OF DIESELS. LONG LIVE THE BIG BLOCK.

I really doubt that the reason it overheated was the holes on the bumper... these cooling systems can handle pulling 15,000lbs uphill for hours why would it overheat from hauling scrap? Possible something in the cooling system failed, thermostat, headgasket, person added that clogging additve and boom. Somehow killed a 8.1!
Possible, but the HD bumpers with the holes were installed specifically to aid in cooling for the HD trucks with the diesel, 6.0, and 8.1.
Not sure what part of the country your in, but down South, you can definitely overheat during the summer months, especially if the truck is sitting around idling for long periods of time. This was a GM reman engine installed about 10 years ago, so it should have been good for many more years.
My theory is that the previous owner thought it was running hot or had a coolant leak so he started adding liquid head gasket sealer until it clogged up the water jackets and cracked the block.
This is the first 8.1 that I have ever seen with a block cracked like this one. Pretty crazy.

Most guys that run scrap are guys who can break a crowbar in a sandpile. They tend to be dumb f.cks in other words. I could haul scrap all day and never put a scratch on my truck. Some guys put a dent in their truck everytime they walk by it. I dont buy trucks from them kinda guys. If they fix something its always have assed or they leave parts off or something like that 😂😂😂
Yea, I can't count the number of times I go to look at a truck and just walk away shaking my head in bewilderment at how shoddily it was repaired or maintained.
Well rip the body off that and keep the drive the frame an d the drive train the basics
Yep, for now I've been digging around for replacement body parts for it. I found and installed the correct HD front bumper on it the other day, so it's starting to look better. The good thing is since GM made about a bazillion of these trucks, body panels are fairly inexpensive and not that hard to locate.
That engine has been rebuilt 8.1 dont have double valve notch pistons
Yep, it's a GM remanufactured engine PN 19211051 from 2012. Didn't notice the tag next to the passenger side motor mount until after I made the video.

Exactly. Even though it looks like it's been used as a $5 per hit sledgehammer carnival attraction, the fact that it's a rust free truck with an 8.1 BBC and Allision transmission makes it worth resurrecting. Thanks for the comments guys👍.
