    If you haven't cut the broken leaf on your painted lady... I've had success in giving a broken leaf a "cast" if it's not too damaged. I use whatever tape I have on hand (painters, scotch, masking, electrical - nothing too sticky). I very gently hold the leaf in place and wrap the tape around the broken stem. I leave it on for a couple months before checking just to be sure. It doesn't always work but I've had a few leaves reattach themselves! :)

    The broken leaf might be still fixable. If you cut a straw length-wise and pop it on the broken leaf, so it holds the broken parts together, it might seal up. I've seen it in a video and tried it one time (spoiler: it worked!), but I cannot for the life of me find it now. It's worth a shot...

    If you get some slim pvc pipe from a diy shop and use that as your moss pole 'inside' you can leave some pvc exposed to sit inside the pot, then wrap the rest in moss and mesh. It saves on using as much moss and mesh and makes the pole more sturdy. Plus where I'm from, it costs £3 for a loooong piece of pvc that makes several poles

    My absolute favourite pole type to grow plants up are fern wood poles & favourite propagation & growing medium is fern fibre (add it to your soil mix or just use alone). It’s truely like sphagnum on crack. If you ever come across it please try it! Don’t know what availability is like outside of New Zealand but I highly recommend it if you can buy it 🤞

    • @hannahjean4301
      @hannahjean4301 Před 2 lety

      @@neekoko4962 It’s really just that root growth is unmatched in fern fibre. Also fern fibre is much easier to remove from roots although I typically just plant the prop that was rooting in fern fibre into soil without removing it as plants thrive in it :)

    The roots attach themselves to clay pots which is why they stick when trying to remove them. I’d suggest using the chopstick to loosen the roots and soil from the edges of the pot before trying to push it out and it should loosen up enough to pull gently out after that.

    A couple of thoughts. I usually put a couple of layers of newspaper in the bottom of my pots to keep the soil in. I'm surprised as how many people don't use anything there.
    On the DIY moss poles. In line with your concern about keeping the moss out of the soil with the self watering poles to prevent root rot, I usually don't put any moss in one end of the pole but rather fill it with my potting medium.

    - I'm not sure if you've already trimmed off that leaf from the Ph. "Painted Lady", but if you haven't... how is it doing? I've encountered a similar issue too, both with bent/damaged leaves and with ones that were ok but needed more stability so they didn't bend (like Monstera leaves with a long petiole). Sometimes I make a kind of "band-aid" for it, and it helps. That might be tape (applied loosely or in a way that it doesn't stick on the plant), twist ties (they have rolls in black that match the moss pole material you have), or some of the velcro "tape" like you have. If you took the velcro tape and put it around that leaf's petiole and the moss pole, it would act as a splint. It might allow it to self-heal, or at least allow it to stay on and be a healthy leaf with a little assistance. (If that makes any sense.)
    - THANK YOU for giving me more motivation to make moss poles for my plants. I got the exact same material (after returning squared chicken wire I'd bought) after seeing you use it awhile back, but I still haven't made one yet. X_X
    - I said this in the other video, but I love those trellises. I'm going to look for the moon phase one in white. 😍🖤

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey! I ended up using tape to create a splint for the leaf, and it's doing well. No yellowing. I think it did slow down growth on the new leaf coming out, but overall the plant isn't doing bad. I'm really hoping it's repairing itself and I can remove the tape one day, not sure how long it takes though...

      @@wildfern Oh cool! In my experience, I think I left the tape on for quite awhile (in all splinting instances like this) before I removed it even just to check its repair status. I hope the plant will continue growing well and that that leaf does heal itself so you can remove the tape splint. You're a great plant parent. You'll know when it's the right time. 🪴🖤

    I hope you haven't cut off the leave off of the painted lady. You can just tape it to make it stronger and look normal, it won't die off, as it's still attached to the plant! :)

    Whats your thoughts on sealing and then painting terracotta pots for indoor plant babies to live in?

    Do you repot in the winter? How do you feel about it personally?

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes I repot all year round :) I have never had any problems with it honestly. Just don’t pot in too big of a pot, and be cautious not to over water!

    LOVE THIS VIDEO! Planty kids are so happy and beautiful! 😍🤩! I LOVE YOUR DIY MOSS POLES! 💖🤩🤩😘! MY OLD LADY LOVESS YOUR POLE!👍😁💓. For as long as I can remember, she was on a cedar plank. My Mom just kept winding her around and around and bitching that she had no idea WTH to do anymore. The plant was given to my parents by Daddy's father as an engagement gift. ( I never met him , as he passed away before I was born). I always knew her as Gramma or the old lady. It was said to be a Sweet heart Philodendron. As a child, I remember my Mom hating the long aerial roots. She would cut them. It was basically heart shaped leaves, 5-6 inches in size. My Mom hated that plant!!!!!!! I always cleaned her leaves as it was all that I had of my Dad's father. One day,I came home from school and the Old Lady was gone!!! Mom threw it over the back hill. Daddy was at work as a police officer. I called the station and he came home.😍💕. He and his partner went down the back hill to save the Old Lady. Mom said that she was ugly, (many naked vines).
    My first job @15 was at a greenhouse. The owner( 91 when she passed) reported the Old Lady. She said, Sweetheart Philodendron, 50 years ago. OL lived, Mom passed and Old Lady even lived after Daddy passed!!!😱. Once I got her, she was a mess. My gf said to chop and prop, that was before I knew anything, so I did. She is happy now on one of your poles. A 50+ cultivar of the so called sweetheart Philodendron.
    So happy that you are feeling better! How is Olive?
    Thank you for pole video and all vids! LIVE YOU!💖🤩🤩🤩
