That Sydneyplantguy is like the lord of moss poles. He’s literally mastered the art of maturing plants in a ludicrously short amount of time. It used to baffle me when he just cuts his moss poles with the plant in half and repot until I realised just how much roots he manages to grow within the poles.
I started following sydneyplantguy because you mentioned him in another video! I want to put a few of my plants on moss poles soon, so thank you for sharing his page, and your tips. Also that big majestic leaf on your el choco red took my breath away! 😍
There's a product called Thiccly as well and it's basically a reusable support you can fill with moss, but because it's partially enclosed, it keeps the moss moist for longer. Obviously Fern has her own supplies, but for anyone else it might be useful :)
Your plants always amaze me. The amount of care and time you dedicate to them really shows. Seriously GOALS! you've inspired me to chop things I've always been afraid to chop . The confidence I've gotten from your channel 🙌🏼
Thanks for a great video 😊 I made my first moss pole about 3 weeks ago after watching one of your videos and now I just want to keep making them. I find it really fun. So I think that also means I better buy some more climbing plants!
If you put little holes in the cap of a water bottle and turn it upside down on the top of the moss pole, it will gradually soak the entire moss pole and run out of the bottom into the pot thus watering the plant itself.
Your tutorial is excellent! Your not long winded, have a beautiful speaking voice and you are to the point. Girl I have to click off long winded self proclaimed experts because they leave me "like what???" Thank you, new sub!
Awesome video, Fern! I don’t really like climbing plants, so I have zero use for moss poles, but I found your video very informative and fun to watch :)
I actually like those plants but I think moss poles are ugly, haha. Only my albo is allowed to grow on one. But I hope it's one day bushy enough to cover its pole.
Great looking plants. I certainly advocate for keeping the poles moist. I have a 5l pressure sprayer that always has nutrient solution that I use on my poles.
@TheLecaQueen You are also very knowledgeable when it comes to moss poles. Your plants are gorgeous! Yes, the sprayer that you use is a good one. A challenge in heading down this road of moss poles is finding the supplies needed when you I've in an area where big box stores/plant products are either limited.
I don't mean to come off crude, but anyone with common sense can tell just from the way you talk about things that you know now about plants than most plant channel people. That and your plants kinda speak for you. Thanks for the valuable information!
YAS GIRL! Them Plants on Poles!! THEM GROWTH GLOW UPS! You can tell your plants LOVE being on them poles, they showing you love back cuz they are GORGEOUS! I’ve never been able to CHOP my plants without freaking out and panicking, so a lot of mine are tall and gangly, gnarly lookin! So I took YOUR advice and guidance, and CHOPPED a TON of mine! And they are coming back so strong! We need to modernize choppin n proppin more! Or maybe I’m just late to the party…as per usual lol. Thanks for sharing! ALWAYS LOVIN SOME WILD FERN! 🌱 🙃 ❤️ 🪴 ✨ ☀️ 🌚
Hi!! I am a small plant business in South FLORIDA and I make crystal mosspoles!! They are all natural, made with bamboo, moss, cotton twine and crystals!!!! I would love to send you a couple if your interested!!! I watch all your videos and you have been a true inspiration for my plant collection!!!
YES, FERN! this video could not have come at a better time!! my moss poles are being delivered tomorrow, and it's the first time i'm using them. i plan to have my adansonii start climbing. thank you so much.
I haven’t been feeling good today so this video could not have come at a better time! Thank you as always Fern! You have such a positive energy that really shows through your videos.
I just love your videos so much!! Your plants are always so beautiful! What a great idea to leave a space at the bottom of the moss pole and fill it with soil!!
I made my most recent pole with coco chips. I also put potting soil into the part in the pot. I have had problems with my older poles that are buried into the soil. The can make the soil very acidic as they break down.
If you turn the nozzle on the automatic sprayer it makes the mist into a stream for more precision . I prefer it over my squirt bottle because it will penetrate the moss better (not on the mist setting) You look so good with short hair☺️
I want to love moss poles! They look so good on other people's plants... But mine always look weird and idk why I think that I just do.... I do have several on moss poles tho but I like to have them hanging if at all possible! I love how my Brasil looks its huge hanging pot.. even with smaller leaves they are soooo pretty. 😍
I love that you mentioned the crispy brown areas on your monsteras. I struggle with that also on my mine as well. I love your albo! So gorgeous! I have the oblique, adensonii, and then a Brazil philodendron, golden, moonlight, silver satin, N’joy and jade and pearl pothos that will all soon need moss poles. Also, do you just let the aerial roots continue to grow outside the pole?
Great suggestion on the thicker moss pole. I SUCK at keeping my moss poles moist. Mine are all super thin and are almost always dry so it totally defeats the purpose.
Fern, will the moss fall downward as it dries? Pretty neat looking poles! Oh! My mountain orange string of hearts came today! It's similar to the variegated soh as the leafs are thicker but it's dark green. Keep the videos coming, so inspiring!
Hi Fern Really loved this video, I always say that about your vids. Lol I have wanted to know how you kept your moss poles moist and now you have done a vid on this. many thanks 🙏 Fern for really going into depth from how you make them etc. Really appreciated all the info, as I am thinking about putting some of my plants on moss poles. Tc Xx
Hey fern 💚, just wondering how do you add a moss pole extension? Do insert something like a wooden dowel/ skewer in the original moss pole and then make another moss pole and put it on top?🤔😅🤗
I think you'd probably have some kind of dowel situation but then using zip ties to attach the pole extension onto the already existing pole to make it more secure. I feel like with just a wooden dowel or skewer it could topple over as it won't be fully secured :)
Not moss pole related, but where can I find the large clear pots that you have your painted lady and albo in? I can only seem to find smaller orchid pots.
Love this video. It is so helpful and gives me courage to keep moss poleing haha. Do you have any advice on when a plant out grows the moss pole?? Thank you!
Love this video! I've been experimenting with moss poles recently. My main focus has been trying to see how I can make self-watering poles work better, and how I can better secure moss poles inside of my pots. I've been SO annoyed with some of my first moss poles and how wobbly they are in side their pots. So I've been trying a few different methods to "attach" the moss poles inside the pots. My last 2 poles I've done, the most recent being a self-watering pole, are pretty stable but not perfect. I have an idea for a new version of my moss pole that I'll be using when I repot my Monstera adansonii. Hopefully it works out well loll.
I’m struggling with this too. I love my self watering moss poles bc it stresses me out spraying water in the wooden windowsills where I have my plants and non-self watering ones dry way to fast in my home to be loving them all the time. But the pipe inside is heavy and they do NOT like to stay up. I’m hoping when I up-pot and can put them a bit deeper it will be better but I’m not sure.
I have made moss poles exactly like you are doing but they didn't seem sturdy enough so I put a piece of PVC pipe inside to make it stronger. But yours look like they stand up just fine! Idk what I was doing wrong, maybe I wasn't adding enough moss? But they just seemed to fold and lean.
In the future, when plants reach the top of the DIY poles, would you try and create your own extension or make a whole new pole? P.S. love the video Fern!! Your hair is growing in pretty long!
Hey sweetheart. I know this dont pertain to this video but what did you say you sprayed your hoyas with. was it cactus spray or orchid spray. thanks and continue to make these awesome videos
It’s an arm that reaches a very far distance looking for sunlight or nutrients meaning the leaves are not densely packed close to one another there is long bits of stem between the leaves. It’s just an aesthetic thing regarding what you want your plant look like
okay Fern (love the name by the way) I am a collector and have many pants in which have been climbing on bamboo. I do not like this because it is skinny and unstable. My monsteras alone are HUGE! I have a roll of plastic chicken wire but after seeing the one behind you, I would LOVE to achieve the rectangular form of my moss poles. Can I do this with plastic wire? I feel that that design would provide more stability to a larger plant. Advice?
Hey! You can get wire that is metal with a plastic coating - I would go for that! It’s what I’m going to get next time instead of just the plastic. It’s supposed to be really sturdy :)
Taking your Brazil cuttings out of water and potting with the pole was the first video I saw of yours! Any reason why you would choose a plank for something versus a moss pole and vice versa? I just put two planks with two of my plants because I was worried about the maintenance of a moss pole.
did you start out with small plants, then put them onto moss poles? or did you buy semi large plants & put them onto poles? Does a plant need to have air roots in order to put it on moss poles? or can you use a moss pole for any plant for support?
I started out with small plants, the younger you can put them on a pole the better. You can use a moss pole just for support, but if there are no aerials to grow into it you are just as good using a plain bamboo trellis or similar.
Hi Fern!!! I'm curious, when you make the moss poles.. I wonder how well it would work if you did a layer of moss, leca, then moss over the top (so leca up the pole in the middle of the moss) and then leca at the bottom where you'd normally add in the soil. I think I just talked myself into trying that lol. Can't tell you how much I enjoy your vids! Did you try that tea yet that I recommended?
No I haven’t lol, still on my wishlist! I am trying to work through some of the ones in my cupboard first. You should totallly try that pole - I’m curious too!
That Sydneyplantguy is like the lord of moss poles. He’s literally mastered the art of maturing plants in a ludicrously short amount of time. He has a YT channel now with a video of exactly that
wow..amazing. good idea!
That dubia DO-be-a cutie *ba dum tss* I am so eager to try moss poles again, thank you for the inspiration Fern!
👁️ I just can't with that new El Choco leaf. 🤤🌱💚
I started following sydneyplantguy because you mentioned him in another video! I want to put a few of my plants on moss poles soon, so thank you for sharing his page, and your tips. Also that big majestic leaf on your el choco red took my breath away! 😍

Not sure what the thiccly is like but I also make a moss pole with plastic sheeting at the back so it keeps the moss moist for longer.
Thank you!
Where I can I buy please
Your plants always amaze me. The amount of care and time you dedicate to them really shows. Seriously GOALS! you've inspired me to chop things I've always been afraid to chop . The confidence I've gotten from your channel 🙌🏼

Definitely putting my Brazil on a pole. Never made a moss pole but I think this spring I'm going to try it. Great video.

Thanks for a great video fern! I love the tip about nutrient water in the moss poles - I use it on my cork boards and it works like a charm😍
I don't mean to come off crude, but anyone with common sense can tell just from the way you talk about things that you know now about plants than most plant channel people. That and your plants kinda speak for you. Thanks for the valuable information!
How did you clean your moss poles when you had thrips? Don't they lay egg's? Your plants look great Thank you!
That Monstera Dubia moss pole is insane!

Another great video, Fern! Thanks for brightening my Thursday morning 🥰
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching 💚
Thanks Fern. I came here to learn how to make a pole. Love seeing your beautiful handiwork with nature. Its inspiring!

Thank you! ☺️
This made me buy the fencing to make my own moss poles lol. Converted...
I just love your videos so much!! Your plants are always so beautiful! What a great idea to leave a space at the bottom of the moss pole and fill it with soil!!
Your plants look so lush, I'm excited to see the Brasil growing so much!
Is that the el choco you got as a tiny baby on your 3/11/2021 live stream? I just purchased a small guy and that gives me huge hope.
Yes it is lol!!
I made my most recent pole with coco chips. I also put potting soil into the part in the pot. I have had problems with my older poles that are buried into the soil. The can make the soil very acidic as they break down.
Hey fern thank you for sharing! Do you notice more pest on the plants that are on moss poles? And how do you keep them from getting pest.
Great in-depth video covering all the big questions in one shot!

Hi Fern, love your hair and plants

This is random but your natural hair color is stunning! It’s so dimensional! 😍
Great suggestion on the thicker moss pole. I SUCK at keeping my moss poles moist. Mine are all super thin and are almost always dry so it totally defeats the purpose.
i love seeing your wonderful videos 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much Claire 🤗
Your Brazil is so beautiful!!
I’ve got to put mine on a moss pole.
I hope I can get it to look like yours
So full!
You can make your own self watering moss pole. You just need a pvc pipe with a cap and cotton rope.
I’ve seen it done but haven’t tried it!
Yay, Wildfern Thursday. ❤❤❤
😃😃
I love the eyeliner so much omg 😍
You should try making a self watering moss poll! I just made one and it’s so easy!!!
I love you videos 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍 thanks so much for you help!! I'm going to make some moss pole!!🥰🥰
Awesome!! Love watching and learning from your videos!! Gorgeous plants!! 😊🙌🪴💗

Not moss pole related, but where can I find the large clear pots that you have your painted lady and albo in? I can only seem to find smaller orchid pots.
I just found them at my local plant shop. I do find they can be trickier to find.

Could you link the spag moss you use?
I’ve been trying to get some of my plants to climb lately. I really want the big mature leaves
moss pole queen
Love it, great video Fern
Thanks so much! 🪴
I like ur nails simple 💖
I LOVE your videos ans contents.
Thank you so much ☺️
brb gonna go stick moss poles in all my plants🏃♀😍
You look so pretty and glowy here
Thank you for sharing
I thought bottom watering was better for pest control? Will this nullify trying to keep your soil dry?
Hey Fern - do you have an update on your v. Adansonii? I’d love to see how it took to the moss pole.
My painted lady philodendron is just small still.
I need to get into moss poles but I am so lazy 😅 my limit is a trellis or two for my hoya
That Brasil is absolutely gorgeous!!!! I really want to do that!! I have one that hangs with pretty large leaves.. but they can always grow larger!!!
In the future, when plants reach the top of the DIY poles, would you try and create your own extension or make a whole new pole?
P.S. love the video Fern!! Your hair is growing in pretty long!
I will either make an extension and zip tie that on, or chop and prop the plant and start a new one :)
@@wildfern lol. Chop and prop 💯
Good reminder to wet my moss poles 🙈❤️
Great video!! I’m curious though….how would you add an extension? 💚
For my DIY ones I just zip tie them together! Leave the bottom open and then put it a little bit overlapping on the original and secure with zip ties.
Hey sweetheart. I know this dont pertain to this video but what did you say you sprayed your hoyas with. was it cactus spray or orchid spray. thanks and continue to make these awesome videos
you’re so beautiful! love seeing a new video from you in my subscriptions!!❤️🥰

Love the plant pillow. I wonder were did you purchase it.
Love this one thanks so much. Can anyone explain what a runner is? in regards to the standleyana? thanks 🤍😊

i have to most janky moss pole T-T it's literally moss tied to a plastic rod covered in plastic wrap so that it doesn't dry out every 30 minutes.

Final Cut Pro on a MacBook Pro
@@wildfern awesome! Thanks so much
Do you have a specific brand of moss you use/recommend? Didn’t see it on your Amazon! Great video, love the DIY method.
SuperMoss is a good quality one brand
loved the vid🥰💗
So glad! Thanks Nina! 💚
So should you cut off the aerial root off or what
Hi Fern, you have inspired me to do more moss poles. Just a quick question, doesn't the moss fall down once in the soil, or you fill it with your mix?
Yes I fill it with the mix! :)
Hi Fern!!! I'm curious, when you make the moss poles.. I wonder how well it would work if you did a layer of moss, leca, then moss over the top (so leca up the pole in the middle of the moss) and then leca at the bottom where you'd normally add in the soil. Hi, me again lol, have you tried *making* a moss pole with a wicking system?
Must be diligent keeping those bad boys moist. I’m a slacker sometimes 😁
Not me making poles yesterday before this video came out🤡🤡🤡🤡
Hi Fern.. I wonder if I can put my silver dollar vines on moss pole?
Not sure about a moss pole, I know a lot of people grow them on a trellis though. Once I get more experience with mine I will have a better idea.
I really can't stay on top of the watering, so unfortunate tho. Maybe some day.
