    That Sydneyplantguy is like the lord of moss poles. He’s literally mastered the art of maturing plants in a ludicrously short amount of time. It used to baffle me when he just cuts his moss poles with the plant in half and repot until I realised just how much roots he manages to grow within the poles.

    There's a product called Thiccly as well and it's basically a reusable support you can fill with moss, but because it's partially enclosed, it keeps the moss moist for longer. Obviously Fern has her own supplies, but for anyone else it might be useful :)

    • @TheLecaQueen
      @TheLecaQueen Před 2 lety +3

      Not sure what the thiccly is like but I also make a moss pole with plastic sheeting at the back so it keeps the moss moist for longer.

    If you put little holes in the cap of a water bottle and turn it upside down on the top of the moss pole, it will gradually soak the entire moss pole and run out of the bottom into the pot thus watering the plant itself.

    • @bethanypuleston
      @bethanypuleston Před 2 lety +1

      I think you'd probably have some kind of dowel situation but then using zip ties to attach the pole extension onto the already existing pole to make it more secure. I feel like with just a wooden dowel or skewer it could topple over as it won't be fully secured :)

    Love this video! I've been experimenting with moss poles recently. My main focus has been trying to see how I can make self-watering poles work better, and how I can better secure moss poles inside of my pots. I've been SO annoyed with some of my first moss poles and how wobbly they are in side their pots. So I've been trying a few different methods to "attach" the moss poles inside the pots. My last 2 poles I've done, the most recent being a self-watering pole, are pretty stable but not perfect. I have an idea for a new version of my moss pole that I'll be using when I repot my Monstera adansonii. Hopefully it works out well loll.

      I’m struggling with this too. I love my self watering moss poles bc it stresses me out spraying water in the wooden windowsills where I have my plants and non-self watering ones dry way to fast in my home to be loving them all the time. But the pipe inside is heavy and they do NOT like to stay up. I’m hoping when I up-pot and can put them a bit deeper it will be better but I’m not sure.

  • @kaliphaneuf7249
    @kaliphaneuf7249 Před 2 lety

    I have made moss poles exactly like you are doing but they didn't seem sturdy enough so I put a piece of PVC pipe inside to make it stronger. But yours look like they stand up just fine! Idk what I was doing wrong, maybe I wasn't adding enough moss? But they just seemed to fold and lean.

I have a roll of plastic chicken wire but after seeing the one behind you, I would LOVE to achieve the rectangular form of my moss poles. Can I do this with plastic wire? I feel that that design would provide more stability to a larger plant. Advice?

    did you start out with small plants, then put them onto moss poles? or did you buy semi large plants & put them onto poles? Does a plant need to have air roots in order to put it on moss poles? or can you use a moss pole for any plant for support?

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  Před 2 lety

      I started out with small plants, the younger you can put them on a pole the better. You can use a moss pole just for support, but if there are no aerials to grow into it you are just as good using a plain bamboo trellis or similar.

      No I haven’t lol, still on my wishlist! I am trying to work through some of the ones in my cupboard first. You should totallly try that pole - I’m curious too!

    Hi, me again lol, have you tried *making* a moss pole with a wicking system?

    Must be diligent keeping those bad boys moist. I’m a slacker sometimes 😁

    Hi Fern.. I wonder if I can put my silver dollar vines on moss pole?

      Not sure about a moss pole, I know a lot of people grow them on a trellis though. Once I get more experience with mine I will have a better idea.

    I really can't stay on top of the watering, so unfortunate tho. Maybe some day.
