Here me out, I know it’s hard to not rescue our leaves when they seem stuck, I was so bad at it. However they will unfurl when they are ready. Sometimes they’re just taking their time. I stopped messing with mine and they always unfurl in their time and I don’t ruin or kill leaves anymore. Also, loving the hair! 💕

    @Layla-gl6wx Před rokem +1

Hey Fern, love it when you share your experiences, it really helps me to take care of my own plants. I use metal chicken wire to make my poles and it is more sturdy but its also tougher to work with when you're actually building the pole. Obviously wire cutters help but I would also recommend getting a good pair of thick gardening gloves as the metal gets pretty sharp after you cut it. I would also recommend that you are extra careful with attaching plants towards the 'back' of the pole (where the zipties are) because I've had plants get scratched by the sharp pieces. Sometimes I sand down the sharp pieces but I mostly just skip that step and handle with care.

  • @sunflowerhillhomesteadaust7887

Thanks for that, great to see what others are doing with moss poles, they are SUCH a great tool.
I totally agree with Campo, a very underrated plant.
I also feel the same about not overcrowding, I much prefer a single vine or maybe a couple, where the plant isn't just a mass of green stuff but visible for what it is. Here in Australia the 'bushy' plant thing isn't so much of a thing, you usually also just buy one actual plant per pot, not a heap jammed in together.
I also started with wire poles but have switched to the plastic garden mesh with 2cm wide gaps.
I switched largely because I hate working with wire, it's nasty and I run a small farm alone while homeschooling my kids, so am constantly using wire to fence large areas, to build things....its so hard on my hands, they're constantly scratched, cut and calloused, and I just didn't want it for my houseplants as well!
I love the soft stuff (though I perfer not to use plastic, but needs must lol!) and I like the bigger holes as well which I feel will be much easier to get roots free from when I'm using the poles for propagation (which i will be doing).
    Thanks, great video :)

I just find them harder to care for or spot anything that goes amiss and I also just ignore them! I'm such a substrate girly too, I like to be able to actually see into the pot if that makes sense🤣 I also like to spot new growth and appreciate each individual leaf, so too many vines just aren't it for me! 1, 2, or maybe 3 is my sweet spot for how many starts I like going up my moss poles🤣

hey fern for freeing the leaves, what i do is i take small scissors and cut the cataphyl in half, in the space where it’s not touching the leaf (i hope that makes sense🙈). so that it’s not connected to the other half and therefor won’t bend anymore, also because it’s not connected to the plant it’ll dry up and then you can just peel it off🙃 hope that helps💚💚

Love seeing the growth on your poles. I’ve added several to my wish list, especially some philo hybrids. So I got a campo last year after admiring yours. Mine shot up a pole and matured really fast (outside in Fl). The leaves are now 9” long and lost their Mican/ velvety look. I promise it is not as exciting large unless you have on a wall to go wild. Yours still looks so beautiful. I think you should just propagate and keep the lush pole. I want the pretty velvety baby leaves back so I’m going to cut mine up. I wonder if you lost something for yours because it is too perfect? 🤷‍♀️

I made some 3 foot moss poles from plastic coated hardware cloth but now I’m thinking I should cut them in half since I would need a step stool to water if I extend. Is your plan to chop and extend, air layer, or just propagate to size up your climbers? And how tall do you see your moss poles in the future?

Wild fern plants = #goals! How often do the trafolia poles dry out compared to your diy plastic poles? And do you give any special care that you provide the vanilla orchid? I had the non variegated one and rotted two of them once transition to a moss plank. And omg where did you get the burl Marx fantasy? It’s stunning! Oh and crusty cataphylls = 100% satisfaction 😆

Not sure if you’ve seen the clear moss poles on Amazon? I hope I don’t regret saying this on your channel. as I would be heartbroken if I went to order and they were out of stock 🤣 But you can get like 4 for 20 bucks. They are amazing ❤

Have you seen the sort of half cut pvc pipe moss poles? I first saw this done by kill this plant on CZcams. They certainly are not the most attractive but they seem like a great option! There is no mesh or anything like that for the roots to get tangled up in so it looks like if you were trying to remove/cut/adjust plant it would be VERY easy! It also seems like it may be easier to keep from drying out AND sooooo simple to extend

When you switch your material for your moss pole. Use plastic covered metal. You just have to ask for at the garden center

My campo is tiny and the leaves are so iridescent! It's on my list to prop and grow it on a plank.

Can't you put a long bamboo stake inside the flimsy plastic poles to make the extensions more stable?

The painted lady might need fertilizer! she's got so much lush green at this point she may need some help after absorbing all the nutrients out of the soil? Not sure if you water with fertilizer currently but just a thought! love your videos

I usually mist or soak the entire end of a leaf that looks stuck. It makes using the qtip easier for me.

Does the Philo splendid need a damp moss pole to get big leaves or is that just a bonus? They look gorge tho.
