  • My first attempts of CNC Machining using a 3018 CNC bench-top router engraver - what great fun!

    About Me...
    I started model engineering and building model stationary steam engines in 2015, after constructing a small engineering workshop in my back yard, I use a Myford ML7 hobby lathe, a Dore Westbury milling machine, along with a pillar drill, band-saw and the usual hand-tools associated with hobby engineering and enjoy making model engines and general tool-making and metalworking. Nearly all of my engines are scratch-built without drawings, from available bar-stock, starting from an initial idea and allowing the design to evolve throughout the build process. I do occasionally use drawings from the web, as a basis for a design, and then modify it to suit my needs, using mostly metric dimensions, but often mix metric and imperial. I spend countless hours in my workshop working on a single engine, and much frustration can be involved, but all this is eventually offset by the pleasure and excitement of seeing my model engines take shape and eventually come to life. My shed is also my sanctuary, somewhere I can go and forget about the worries of everyday life, to occupy my mind and hands with something creative and fulfilling, where I am free from distraction and interruption.     the speed may say 1000, but that spindle motor actually spins at about 8500RPM. But that doesn't matter - it won't be long before you have upgraded that to a 500W Chinese motor so you can do some actual cutting. Then you will have modified all the axes to stiffen them up. But before any of that, bolt on a thin piece of MDF as a spoil board so you can cut right through things without damage.

    Well reviewed Ade, I often wondered about getting one of these but have refrained so far. Having spent years programming CNC through work, I wanted to wind handles again which I am enjoying. Must say £150 is bonkers for this capability!! Cheers, Jon

    Great video !
    As well as engraving you can use them for making circuit boards , machining out the holes in plastic enclosures for electronics projects and to cut out gaskets for model engines .

    Interesting video, I had always thought that these cheap routers were just toys, however it did a reasonable job on the brass plate. I imagine it will be better still with the updated spindle.

      Thanks Simon, yep they are more capable than expected, and I'm sure I can only improve as I learn more, just need to be patient and not to rush it

      Hi Simon after doing quite a lot of brass engraving with a identical machine, I found it's not the motor that needed upgrading as the ridgity of the frame is it's limitation. But with good cutters and light passes these can do some great work. Still amazed the accuracy of these, I've done some extremely detailed v carve work on brass, works best with cz121 bar stock or cz120 engravers sheet, struggles alot on cz102 sheet as it has a very tough polished surface. Essentially thou these are great providing your not in a rush, but once set up will work away without assistance, allowing you to carry on with other work once you stop being mesmerised by it working away.

      @@simonbirt6121 as far as I know all these 3018 Pro cnc's are made by Sainsmart, look for a USB version over the parallel port.
      Then get the ER11 collet set so you can use variety of shank size cutters, for brass and Ali look at 2/3 flute end Mills. Just get carbide, don't bother with HSS cutters they don't last and you'll waste more money in long run. For VCarve in brass look for 60deg 0.1mm point engraving cutters again carbide. And then play, you'll only be able to cut 0.15mm DOC and about 300mm/min feed rate on a machine like this but if you take it steady like this it will complete you pieces well, if you push the depth of cut and feed rate you loose steps and accuracy, but this is the sacrifice of a cheap machine. If you want more serious material removal you'll need to look at much bigger more expensive machines like the 2k range.

    Great review I keep looking at these 😀 would have been helpful to know what feeds and speeds you used. Might save a few broken bits for others!

      Hi Julia, Easle has pre-set speeds and feeds for a variety of materials and bit types, I just used those as a starting point and modified them to suit, depending how the test cut worked out

    Hey Ade, great vid. I got one of these machines Christmas 2019(I know distant memory now) and gotta say it always impressed me and I made loads of stuff using it and even for a while was making branding irons from other makers using that exact machine to do all the logo work, yes had to go slow but once set running it would do its thing and I could get on so a 5hour program never bothered me.     I was thinking about one of these, or maybe the next one up. it can actually mill z axis too? I want to carve wax molds. it's very tedious and a slip can cost a few minutes and repair. 4 axis adds more $ but might be nifty to have. 775 motor doesn't have a lot of torque but itd be ok for me

    Ade - to help me along, which cutting tip did you use for the brass plate? The end mills or the v-cutters supplied? Also, what depth and speed did you try? Thanks in advance for any help you can give 👍🏻

      Hi Mick, I used the V cutter, 0.4mm depth, at plunge of 0.2 per pass, the feed was 150mm/min, but probably better slower as I did feel this was a bit aggressive, so I would say to do some test cuts and see what works best

      @@mickhaden5888 yes the rigidity needs improvement, I think i'm going to add a 3rd rail mounted above the others, lots of little modifications needed to improve this

    Thanks for the video. You might want to try out the new designer feature in UGS which would make the process a bit easier compared to exporting the gcode from Easel. The UGS designer still lacks a lot of features compared to Easel and is still a bit unpolished, but might be handy for some jobs.
