  • My first marathon build up and debut are done! It was a nice and long journey where I had the opportunity to train in Kenya! Even my Kenyan haircut is starting to disappear a bit. In this video I will take you along my race day and my lessons learned in the end. Apparently I can still walk the stairs pretty well and the muscle pain is quite doable, maybe my recovery is back to normal after I am off the antibiotics for 10 days now.
So as most of you know I was going to run the Enschede marathon this weekend! A city to the east in the Netherlands. It was so much fun to race and compete for a good time again. My race plan was simple, going with the first ladies. The first ladies were going to be paced on a 2:22 schedule, where my goal was still to run a sub 2:20 marathon. So I had to be fresh halfway to run a negative split!
I was on the (sub) Elite starting list and beforehand I could give away our drinks and gels for each 5km point. They made clear how our bottles were going to be positioned on each table. To eat and drink enough I took every 5km ⅔ of a gel and 100-150ml of carbohydrate drink mix. Here you see my bottles which I marked with a red straw. Before the race a take 250ml of coca cola, a few sips of coffee (not to much, which causes dehydration) and half a maurten gel 10min before the start for even more caffeine! By the time of the start I can go fly like a rocket haha. Oke, so let’s go to the start!

CONGRATULATIONS! That is an incredible time. My first half marathon I ran was a 2:23, and I remember being in awe (and frustrated) as marathoners flew by me towards the end. It always amazes me how fast some people are. Well done! You'll hit 2:20 in no time!
