  • Video tutorial on how to replace the blower motor resistor on a Ford Ranger. This is a fairly common issue amongst Rangers, Explorers, and most likely the Mazda B series trucks as well. The main symptom of a failing blower motor resistor is that your fan speed will only work on the high setting. If your fan doesn’t work at all, then there is most likely a blown fuse, issue with the blower motor, hvac panel problem, or a fault in the wiring. This particular vehicle I am working with here today is a 1998 Ford Ranger, so there maybe some variations between the years and models.

    Tools/Supplies Needed:
    -8mm 3/8” drive socket
    -3” 3/8” drive extension
    -3/8” drive ratchet
    -blower motor resistor
    -dielectric grease
    -interlocking pliers
    Procedure:
    -start by opening the hood of your vehicle and then locate the blower motor resistor which is on the passenger side, along the firewall where the blower motor is located
    -down towards the bottom by the inner fender arch you will see a large electrical connector which is connected to the blower motor resistor
    -using an 8mm socket, 3” extension and a 3/8” ratchet, remove the two bolts holding in the unit
    -this can be a fairly tight spot and you don’t necessarily have to remove the electrical connector first
    -unfortunately I am unable to remove the electrical connect, I’m assuming the contacts are corroded which is a common issue amongst these trucks
    -you can also disconnect the two upper electrical connectors to gain a little more room
    -using the assistance of a couple interlocking pliers and a few minutes of wiggling the connector I managed to get it loose
    -if yours are mildly corroded, you can allow the connector to soak for a couple hours in vinegar, then clean up using electrical contact cleaner
    -if the connector is too far gone, purchase a replacement hardness and solder it into place
    -reinstall the new resistor and apply some dielectric grease to the connector to help prevent corrosion
    -connect the remaining connectors if removed and then test

    Very helpful thankyou. Good lord those holes are a butt to find again when reinstalling. I find disconnecting the hose right above it helps a bit. Lots of patients and small hands. Fixed the issue❤️

    TO ANYBODY STUCK IN THE COLD AND THAT JUST NEEDS A TEMPORARY FIX. GET A SCREWDRIVER, PUT THE END OF IT ON THE CONNECTOR, AND TAP IT WITH A HAMMER. THATLL KNOCK THE CORROSION LOOSE AND START IT UP. IF ITS THE BLOWER MOTTOR WACK IT A COUPLE TIMES JUST LIKE ON A STARTER IT CAN GET STUCK. KEEP TAPPING IT WITH THE HEAT ON IN THE CAR. YOULL HEAR IT KICK ON.

    My blower motor resistor packed up. 1998 model Ford Courier pickup truck. Parts are hard to comeby where I live and only option was to order online and wait for weeks for a part to get delivered. So what I did was connect the broken resistor coils with solder. measure the resistance with a multimeter. Got a new heating element that comes for electric stoves...costed like $3. Cut pieces to match the resistance on my original coil... soldered the new coil off the stove into the resistor coil pack. Whole thing took 10mins tops. Works like a charm and the stove heating element seem to be way better quality than resistor pack coils as it's meant for high heat operations.... So if you have the old style coil resistors, can't source parts in a jiffy.... this is an option

    Great Video. I bought a ranger with 176K miles on it and found the AC did not work. Fixed that(bad condenser) went to use the AC and it only blows cold on high. So happy to have air but thinking I will want to turn it down aftera while. Glad to find out it should be an easy fix.

    these are meant to be removed through the fenderwell, not under the hood.

    Is it normal for the Air Conditioning to be on even when you only want outside air ? When the thermostat is set to cold, will it always turn the air conditioning on ? I can`t seem to get outside air ventilation without the air conditioning to engage.

      I’ve wondered why just the fan, ac off would feel surprisingly cooler than expected. And now the blower quit working during a short road trip (~800 miles). Ac compressor replaced maybe 10k miles ago. 🤷🏼‍♂️

      @@4DIYers no problem 😁 now if you could do one on the blower being on high and no real air coming through the vents.
      That would be great.

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  Před 3 lety

      Unfortunately I no longer have access to the Ranger. But that can be a blend door issue, the motorized actuator is not working or a flapper is broken/jammed or there maybe debris in the vents.

  • @kcraig51

    Will a bad resistor cause low air volume? Even on high speed, max A/C it feels like it's on low or second speed, It will blow on all 4 settings. All the flaps look like they're sealing. Thanks

    My AC works good, but the blower slows down after some time, As soon as I toggle between different settings, it starts up again, and than in a few minutes it slows down again. So I'm flipping back and forth from regular AC to Max AC.
    Any idea what the problem could be?

    • @4DIYers
      @4DIYers  Před 6 lety

      Could be looking at a corroded wires, a faulty hvac controller, or a failing blower motor.

      Mine was doing the same thing, only working on high and sometimes you'd have to give the blower motor a couple taps for it to come on. Luckily it's a cheap part and a easy fix!
