I read an interview with Jeff where he talked about his music. I’d never heard a note of his music yet his words went straight from the page to my heart. He was playing that same night, one concert in Sydney at the Phoenician Club. I didn’t know it was impossible to find tickets for it. I never went to concerts. But I had to go to this one. To go to be with this soul. I went & stood by the entry door gazing into the Club. A man came to the door and said he had some complimentary ticket & would I like one. So I entered as I was meant to be there. Like coming home to hear my dear beautiful heart brother sing. Jeff was real. A one in a million so rare one. I miss him.

Thank you for sharing this. I wonder if this was the same Phoenician club Jeff concert I went to? It would have been around 2005-ish. [Postscript: I got the decade wrong!! It was more like 1995-ish] Like you, I very rarely attended concerts, but I had had the very good fortune of meeting Jeff and his band. My friend and I got to go to every gig in their Sydney tour after the first one at the Metro. At the Phoenician club, Jeff had given us green room passes, and he autographed my silk-satin entry pass. Then... I watched the most phenomenal live performance ever. Do you recall when he let his voice range wildly and freely up and down through god knows HOW many octaves. No words, just incredible sounds and vocal expressions. Maestro. Do you recall he threw one of his guitar picks into the audience? I don't know how this happened but I caught it!!! I still have it. Do you recall that he dedicated one of his songs to "My Kangaroo Blue"? No, that wasn't me, sadly, but a beautiful Sydney woman who had blue hair with silver bells in it, they were having a lovely little romance. I always wondered if she knew of his dedication... I'm guessing she was there. Anyhow, what an AMAZING soul, and an amazing concert! So glad you followed your instincts and went.

In like MFing the summer of 2015 I drove to Fing Buffalo, NY all the way from MFing DFW in a god damn Penske taking highly classified architectural stainless steel material back to the place of its birth......and I made god damn sure to stop in Memphis.....get the F off the highway.....grab me a god damn coffee at some bull$hit overpriced brick and mortar........and I drove my $hit over to the exact spot where Jeff jumped into the MFing stupid as all F water and I Fing spit into it....basically at the end of that there parking lot.

The fact that Liz was upset about this song being released,saying something to the effect of, 'why does everything have to be heard?' makes me feel guilty sometimes listening to it, like it was clearly this very personal recording, moment, song to the two of them. She also was upset it got out because she said it 'wasn't finished' which makes me think this must be like a bare bones, acoustic version of the song. All that said, it makes me tear up every time I listen and in my own selfish way, I am so grateful it did get out.
+verveine m Exactly of course she wasn't going to redo her parts when he died or anything she just knows they could have done it much better and this is basically a home demo. She probably also feels it is an invasion of her/their privacy because they had an affair at the time. In a way it's akin to the whole wide world listening to private unfinished recordings of you and your ex who tragically died young after the break up. +verveine m well said, very thought-filled and compassionate. don't know the answer but perhaps because liz was such a perfectionist, or maybe cuz she has sought solitude and doesn't welcome the intrusion of critique, or maybe simply cuz she so valued her relationship both personally and professionally with buckley and for whatever reason felt compelled not to share this duet with the world. who knows? but it's a truly beautiful rendering and like so many buckley-written tunes this one's mesmerizing and agonizingly beautiful.

Despite Elizabeth Fraser's misgivings about this recording, I (and it seems many others) honestly feel that this is the perfect version of this song. Putting a whole bunch of production into a song like this would probably make it feel much less immediate and heartfelt. This is old-school music making at it's best: a lightning-in-a-bottle take of a stunning song by two great artists at the height of their powers and with an obvious and strong emotional chemistry between them. You don't want to go messing too much with a piece of art that came out as perfectly formed as this did. I just love this track to bits, and the world would be a lesser place without it.
The immediacy, the capture of the emotion of the moment, the depth of feeling, all make this the only recording there should be. It is a testament to their passion and connection, that can never be surpassed. Look at the number of views, many of which are people like me who come back to it time and again for that very reason.
I always feel guilty when i listen to this masterpiece, It's like if I'm invading an intimate relationship, a secret between two lovers... when i read about how Elizabeth was upset with it release and how she repeated that its not finished it make me so sad. To me, this is probably one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, if not the most. So raw, yet so delicate, so angry, yet so tender, so sophisticated, yet so simple. As a songwriter myself, this is the type of stuff that motivates me to work hard to improve my craft in order to create something as touching as this, yet makes me hopeless as I probably never will. It's one of those things that somehow eludes the understanding of the very creator, I mean, I don't see how someone who writes this song is even aware of what he/she's doing, and the fact that Fraser seems to be unhappy about this recording seems to prove my point. We are in desperate need of more music like this, but who really knows how to write it? What a stroke of genius and inspiration. This is magic.
The chords are simple. The melody and singers make the song. If you can write a good melody and sing then that's the most you can ask for. The magic only happens for very few.

I’ve had a copy of grace for some years now. I didn’t even know this song existed I barely discovered it this morning on July 30, 2023 I can’t stop listening to it it’s absolutely beautiful. I saw Jeff play in Austin in 94 at a record store. It's true! After the show I walked up to him and said I had never heard anyone sing like that before. His response was Really, I'm glad you liked it" Then I asked him for a hug and he did. I'm not gay or whatever. It was just the vibe and there was women everywhere and I talked to him maybe 3 or 4 minutes. Then women surrounded him and pushed me out of the way. You don't forget something like that, your whole life you don't!

I heard it for the first time yesterday and listened to it a few times soaking it in. I realised last night that the chorus was still in my head and I went to bed hearing it and I woke up this morning with it still playing in my head. It’s an extraordinarily beautiful piece of art.

Millicent Ingram I'm about Jeff's age and I had met him one time in Austin,Tx at an instore jam I think it was 94 or 5 and fell for Jeff instantly. I had never heard anyone sing like that before, I've dreamt about him many times, so I feel ya!

What's more is that he appeared when I was mourning him, over my bed, smiling - not a dream, I'd just waken up at dawn (not twilight like the pre-edit) - & many visits thereafter. He told me also that you never "die" & made it VERY clear that he is Not a "ghost". Ghosts are stuck between worlds, Jeff is not stuck anywhere. He is still involved in his life, as Jeff Buckley; he's just finishing from the Other Side. Imagine my surprise when my only daughter, 15 years old ATM, played this for me one cold Alabama morning on the hour long drive to her school. There's a lot of praise for the vocals (which is warranted, the vocals by both Jeff and Liz are AMAZING) but I think the guitars in this song are absolutely sublime, and very underrated. Jeff is really known for his voice, but he was an extremely skilled and unique guitar player who worked very hard to get there.
Absolutely, been trying to work out the chords, I’m sort of halfway there with them but it’s the rhythm which is surprisingly tricky. Such a lovely guitar player.

@@sarcasticallyrearranged there is a lack of closure the like of which there wouldn't be if it was an overdose, or an obvious suicide, the fact that it was to our knowledge, a natural, accidental drowning, means that we can't ever even begin to think what he was feeling or thinking in his last moments, we will always be left guessing if it was actually completely natural, if he just let go when he realized what's happening and if he could've escaped it if he tried. If it was a suicide it'd be another artist tragically driven to it by the toxic industry and the fame, or that he was so deeply depressed that he took his own life, no, we don't get that, and I'm so happy for it. It leaves us guessing, it shocks us to our cores and reminds us of the fragility of humanity, and that even perhaps the greatest voices also falter.

It's one of the rare songs that formed a vigorous attachment to my ears from the first listen... It literally demolishes any feeling of emptiness and causes a surge of feelings that overwhelm me, in a good way. It feels like a slap, it makes me forget about the flatness of everyday life, and even if it's just for a couple of minutes - I exalt that sensation. Unmatched artists are spread out all over this world, each in their own corner of solitude and weirdness, weaving timeless peaces... Wish we could've had more of Jeff's woven stuff... some of us still dwell in his corner, scavenging for any uncovered thread, such as this.

The fact that Liz was upset about this song being released,saying something to the effect of, 'why does everything have to be heard?' makes me feel guilty sometimes listening to it, like it was clearly this very personal recording, moment, song to the two of them. She also was upset it got out because she said it 'wasn't finished' which makes me think this must be like a bare bones, acoustic version of the song. All that said, it makes me tear up every time I listen and in my own selfish way, I am so grateful it did get out.

Despite Elizabeth Fraser's misgivings about this recording, I (and it seems many others) honestly feel that this is the perfect version of this song. Putting a whole bunch of production into a song like this would probably make it feel much less immediate and heartfelt.
This is old-school music making at it's best: a lightning-in-a-bottle take of a stunning song by two great artists at the height of their powers and with an obvious and strong emotional chemistry between them. You don't want to go messing too much with a piece of art that came out as perfectly formed as this did.
I just love this track to bits, and the world would be a lesser place without it.
It's a beautiful recording as is, but understandable the artist would want to fix things, e.g. Jeff's throat clearing at 2:49

But at the same time, im so happy and grateful im alive and i have the privilege to listen to it. this is my treasure, my big big secret, its perfect, its divine..
To me, this is probably one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, if not the most. So raw, yet so delicate, so angry, yet so tender, so sophisticated, yet so simple. As a songwriter myself, this is the type of stuff that motivates me to work hard to improve my craft in order to create something as touching as this, yet makes me hopeless as I probably never will. It's one of those things that somehow eludes the understanding of the very creator, I mean, I don't see how someone who writes this song is even aware of what he/she's doing, and the fact that Fraser seems to be unhappy about this recording seems to prove my point. We are in desperate need of more music like this, but who really knows how to write it? What a stroke of genius and inspiration. This is magic.

His response was Really, I'm glad you liked it" Then I asked him for a hug and he did. I'm not gay or whatever. It was just the vibe and there was women everywhere and I talked to him maybe 3 or 4 minutes. Then women surrounded him and pushed me out of the way. You don't forget something like that, your whole life you don't!

He told me also that you never "die" & made it VERY clear that he is Not a "ghost". Ghosts are stuck between worlds, Jeff is not stuck anywhere. He is still involved in his life, as Jeff Buckley; he's just finishing from the Other Side. I know I’ve commented before but I keep coming back to this comment section as I think it might actually be the best on CZcams. Feels like such a safe section of humanity all coming together bonded over a 5 minute song which we were never supposed to hear. It’s amazing how this song it has made everyone write such beautiful things.

There's a lot of praise for the vocals (which is warranted, the vocals by both Jeff and Liz are AMAZING) but I think the guitars in this song are absolutely sublime, and very underrated.
Jeff is really known for his voice, but he was an extremely skilled and unique guitar player who worked very hard to get there.

@Melanie mystery, lack of closure? There's neither. He went into a river fully clothed, barge came by, dragged him under and he drowned.
@@sarcasticallyrearranged there is a lack of closure the like of which there wouldn't be if it was an overdose, or an obvious suicide, the fact that it was to our knowledge, a natural, accidental drowning, means that we can't ever even begin to think what he was feeling or thinking in his last moments, we will always be left guessing if it was actually completely natural, if he just let go when he realized what's happening and if he could've escaped it if he tried. If it was a suicide it'd be another artist tragically driven to it by the toxic industry and the fame, or that he was so deeply depressed that he took his own life, no, we don't get that, and I'm so happy for it. It leaves us guessing, it shocks us to our cores and reminds us of the fragility of humanity, and that even perhaps the greatest voices also falter.

This song is a gem. It feels like it was never intended for public release, and I feel like I’m eavesdropping on a large secret. So much love to both Liz & Jeff.
It's one of the rare songs that formed a vigorous attachment to my ears from the first listen... It literally demolishes any feeling of emptiness and causes a surge of feelings that overwhelm me, in a good way. It feels like a slap, it makes me forget about the flatness of everyday life, and even if it's just for a couple of minutes - I exalt that sensation.
Unmatched artists are spread out all over this world, each in their own corner of solitude and weirdness, weaving timeless peaces...
Wish we could've had more of Jeff's woven stuff... some of us still dwell in his corner, scavenging for any uncovered thread, such as this.
This is the best song I've heard in years. Jeff's voice sounds so perfect, so vulnerable, so out of this world. They both complement each other flawlessly. I'm so happy that this exists.
This song is achingly beautiful. That flirtation of heavenly voices dancing around each other and then combining into one. Their love was brief, but you could feel the butterflies here. It stands alone as a song unfinished and beautiful as is...so intimate.
