Assetto Corsa Competizione - What's REALLY Going On With Performance? All Consoles Tested!

- It's the purest racing sim on console. However the move to Unreal Engine 4 changes the performance profile on PS4 and Xbox One systems, losing the 60fps target of the original Assetto Corsa. This time, Competizione pushes a respectable grade of visuals on console compared to PC, but the frame-rate is locked to an uneven 30fps cap - with a twist on base PS4.

To me it looks a bit like there is no 30 FPS cap at all; Instead, it looks like the frame-rate is unlocked on every machine, but the dynamic res scaler is set to keep it in the 30ish range at all times. The reason why PS4 is pushing more frames would be because it hits its resolution limit more often. In any case, that's a bizarre setup.
Thomas Morgan thank you for highlighting the differences between each console. Excellent DF breakdown and explanation of the differences, even if they're mostly resolution related.
Always like Tom's videos. Never let's me down. DF has a spectacular team and I hope they stay together for a good long while
Wich and Tom are my favorites 👌
Yeah, DF is a powerhouse of gaming enthusiasts. All of them very talented and sympathetic!
30fps and inconsistent frame delivery too? Ugh.
Really not ideal for a racing title.
The original AC on PC had frame pacing issues too especially with v-sync enabled. Strangely, it didn't happen during replays which made me speculate that there was some weird interaction between the physics and the graphics engine.
of course the physics is demanding for such simulation game, it is like flight simulator. it is already a miracle it works on current gen console..people should not complaining. The cpu is the most important, follow by gpu and memory in this game. It is for PC, Xbox Series X and PS5 but not for current gene console. it will be good to determine the real power of these Next gen console. There will be no fake or lie here. I bet the new console will target 60fps because their architecture is more optimized than PC. xbox series X has more than two times the gpu power of Xbox one X and more than 4 times the CPU power. so a 4kdynamic resolution at 30 fps could translate to 4K60fps I think especially if they still use dynamic resolution and VRR and all the new tech.
30fps for a racing sim is not acceptable.
@Mike UK when you play it sadly it is a stutter mess. It has a lot of potential but I'm not going to be able to play it until they fix the stutter issues.
@Mike UK you must only play crappy 30fps all the time , 30fps for racing is megadrive era ,lol
It's because of developers, 60fps could've been achieved on both consoles
It must feel horrible to play at 30fps with a wheel.
Not only for a racing games , for all games , 60 fps should be the standard
I Feel this should've been a next gen release, I play this on PC with an i9 9900K and an RTX 2080 and can play it al ultra 4K 60fps and it looks absolutely incredible, this is a missed opportunity as consoles can't handle it. Mainly due to that crappy Jaguar CPU with all the physics. But as SIM's go it's the most realistic sim racer there is for GT3 Cars, even GT3 drivers like Nikki Thim and David Perrel praise it for being as real as it gets. Shame the performance on console doesn't match.
Hopefully they will do a patch for next gen and bring it in line with high end PC's. I am very much enjoying the game on my xbix one x so far
JP Racing
Absolutely. There is little reason to purchase this on current gen.
it will get patched on next gen
Chances they'll add JGTC GT500? Cars are similar to GT3 spec and it would be cool to see that championship get more exposure
@@martinantelo7086 I don't think so as ACC is the official Blaincpain game so they wouldn't want to be advertising another series.
Superb. Very well put together and absolutely nailed my experience with the title on Pro. Covered all the points good and bad.
That pronunciation of "Competizione" was 👌 (says an italian guy)
So funny when he says it. I live in Germany, and everytime they have to pronunce t and z in the same word is so awkward!!
@El diablo da Costa TBH i am and I can't tell that isn't perfect but still is good. Since isn't his language, he did the best he can and yes is funny, but you never lived abroad for a comment such that
@El diablo da Costa
Yep, but his pronunciation is clear.
Right pronunciation does not mean "no accent".
@El diablo da Costa I'm italian too and his pronunciation was just fine, of course there's an accent
It was fine for a non-native, full stop

30FPS or not, the game is the best sim I have ever played on console really addictive. Incredible sound and physics. And the AI is really good.
you have low standards :(
Német Attila well no other sim comes even close to ACC if you're looking for GT3 racing. However the potato consoles really hold ACC back. Atleast the PS5 and XBSX should fix that
@@WhiteoutTech AC is the most played game in my steam library so I can imagine ACC is even better :) but this stuttering.... kills the joy, even hard to watch! (30fps isn't ideal I do know but this 31-32 is just terrible and what really holds it back is the lazy dev....)
I waited for you! Thanks DF!
Great video as always but we miss the test at 1080p on the PS4 Pro.
great video and, as italian I appreciated your effort to pronounce the game title in a correct way
You only need to look at the 1st game to see what the console support will be like for this game.
BTW. Horizon Zero Dawn is coming to PC next month with lots of improvements.
I think everyone knew that already
I hope they release spiderman to pc too so that you PC users can enjoy it
Wow! After 3 years! Cool!
Udhaya Bhaskhar Kumar That’s not going to happen unfortunately, Sony not only owns the Spider-Man brand but also the developer, I think only the games using the Decima engine will go to PC, since it’s the only engine used on PS exclusives that’s also on PC, and the others are very hard to port for PC, so expect HZD, Death Stranding and possibly HZD 2 (3-5 years after launch if it sells well) to go to PC
I just want Bloodborne 2
I love when racing games have settings for the steering. It's one of the things I wish Forza Horizon had. Having your steering input limited by your speed is kind of fustrating, let me judge how fast and sharp the wheels should turn in a corner.
Forza Horizon is a joke, but only smart people notice..

Yeah, after playing Driveclub I realized real quick that I'd take framerate over more polished graphics. Even with games like Ridge Racer 7 that don't look particularly state of the art, but the 60 fps makes it feel like it's state of the art. The framerate is a big deal, to me. For sure. It can make a so-so- game truly spectaculat to play.

Been waiting for this
I didn't know i was missing this kind of analysis. Even the 5:56 song. Nice
Will you be testing now after patch 1.03?
Seems that when changing resolution and forcing 1080p on PRO we get pretty decent framerate now.. around 50 maybe?
I would LOVE to see a more in depth look at this game on the PC side, it’s my favorite game at the moment and I’m planning a new build and want to know where to allocate my money. It seems like it overwhelms my old CPU in multiplayer. Also seems to heavily favor Nvidia. 4770k with a Vega 64 is playable but I’m getting a lot of frame drops and drastically lower performance with other cars on the track.
Just built a PC w/ ryzen 5 3600x & Nvidia rtx 2060. Seems to be a good sweet spot of value to performance with this game. Can easily hit > 60fps at 1440p w/ maxed settings (excluding the rearview mirror performance hit).
I was surprised to read your CPU is struggling as its fine for most games (I have 4790k). Took a look at its recommended CPUs and they are both 6 core CPUs so yeah, perhaps our CPU is getting a little long in the tooth :(. No wonder consoles are limited to 30FPS. Going by recommended specs one would think it is better optimized for AMD (lists 1070 and RX580) but I'd guess other benchmarks out there might tell a different story.
MisterMe jup you definetly need a stronger cpu. quadcores won't be enough for any next gen game anyway. I would recommend getting a ryzen 7 3700x or intel i5 10600K
Those temporal artifacts are really unbearable. No matter how much the temporal algorithms do for you, the artifacts it creates just are no where near worth it.

The new performance update is out for ps4 pro and Xbox one x. Would you check that and create an update on this topic?
Nice Video! Great match. I also tested the game in 1440p with a 2070 Super. Warm greetings from Germany. 👋
30fps was not acceptable for Crash Team Racing. It sure isn't acceptable for a sim racer.
What‘s about the PS4 Pro 1080p mode? Does the Pro downscale, or is it native 1080p? In case of native 1080p, is it uncapped as the base PS4, and if yes, what are results?
Also did I not pay proper attention or were those glaring temporal(?) artifacts from the spoiler in reflections on the wet road completely not mentioned? Looks like spoiler ghosting 👻
Same on PC ...ghosting spoiler or whatever it is .caused by TAA..just disable temporal anti-aliasing
Agreed, the temporal artifacts were very noticeable and very annoying.
So it really is that?! Thanks for confirming. Seems kinda like a worst case szenario for taa, high speeds. But have never experienced it this bad/never found it that distracting

I get around 90 -120 fps depending on whats happening with epic/ very high settings on my 3700X / Nitro+ 5700 XT build. Ever since I grabbed Project Cars 2 for 8 dollars on the Steam Summer Sale the other day I've been binge playing that instead. Such a good game.
"Frame pacing is all over the place on PS4 Pro"
aaaaaaand I'm out
First time in years I've played a racing game with my wheel at 30fps. It felt horrible. I didn't even do one lap and turned the game off.
No racing game in 2020 has any place being 30fps. Project Cars 2 on PS4 PRO runs at 60fps just fine.
Project Car 2 doesn't even remotely have the same physics simulation and also doesn't simulate the physics for the AI cars, they're just scripted shells going around the track where as in ACC the AI cars have their physics simulated to ensure the AI is affected by weather conditions the same way the player is. You'll notice you never hear anybody say: "the AI is too fast in the rain" in ACC, this is why.
@@Robdgnl these guys have no idea what they're talking about.
@@Robdgnl it doesn't matter if the AI cars have their own physics simulation if the game is unplayable. I'd rather have a game that works and runs at 60fps rather than one that has AI Physics but doesn't even run at 30fps

Don’t forget the input lag for wheel users. I’ve experienced large delay with my Fanatec and T-GT. (PS4 Pro)
Input lag is visual only. Use dashcam view so you won't get distracted by that visual delay. Helped me a lot

Hemny That’s not a hard one PS4 and XBO are on par (1080p at 60fps locked, Pro and One X can run it at 4K). Switch is 1080p dynamic and unlocked but hovers mostly between 40-50fps with dips to 30 and graphics quality overall is low.

Choppa Nachos actually, according to VG Tech, which often corrects DF on pixel counts and has gotten pixel counts right and DF course corrected after states it’s only 1080p on PS4 Pro, but fully native 4K on X. There’s likely no Pro support at all.

1:28 Dynamic resolution scale ! You guys are the most in the know about this stuff, how can we enable this on PC version ? If the consoles can get it why cant we on PC ? ACC is super hard to run especially at higher resolutions and having it dynamic would make the world of difference ! I'm at 5760x1080 on a 1080Ti and struggling at times and have tried to find the solution and Kunos don't seem able or want to get this working :(
When are you going to try ACC on a next gen console?
Will you do a Snowrunner analysis?
Yeah I dunno what the devs thought. Pair back the visuals and go for 60. Or let people play unlocked as an option. I dont get it
I upgraded my horizon 4 experience to 120fps since January and now 60 feels soo laggy I cant keep the car straight, I'm not sure I drive better thanks to 120fps but I sure as hell can't drive at 60 now, I wonder where does it stop? 240fps? 500fps?
Actually ACC is less demanding than org AC for the cpu. In ACC I could join and race with 60+ cars at low 45-60fps but still pretty smooth experience. With AC the system started to stutter and displayed high cpu load warnings at over 45cars on track. That was with an old 3770k in both cases.
why you show blue Nissan GT-R Nismo only in PS4 pro version? But how rainy weather look on PC??
That time when 33fps is "10x times" worst than 30fps.
Very interesting because I do plan on getting this game. Have a One X but think I will wait till I get series X. Friend who has it says it’s still quite buggy too
I still wish Driveclub made it to PC
Also pls change the CPU at least in the testing rig to better gauge the GPU's worth, I feel that 1080Ti's being seriously bottlenecked

30 fps should be unacceptable any game with skill based gameplay, but yes especially any and every racing game. I’ve been playing Star Wars Episode 1 Racer recently. Why does that game 20 year old game have a sense of speed that most others on the market don’t right now? Because it’s 60fps. Also, bumper cam gang for life.
Has the recent patch improved anything?
This is the first proper vid about acc on console i've seen. Its almost unplayable on the one x, while a lot of streamers said it was quite good. I am waiting for a series x.
Was watching console footage the other day and thought it just had a really bad frame rate. I guess the fact they can lock it to 30 atleast is a good thing for people who bought it.
I'm not sure if releasing this did more to hurt the game than if they had waited and had it as a next gen launch title
i interested to see the Xbox Series X and ps5 version in the future, to know what framerate they can get. it will give us the information on the real power of this system (not ssd power as all the assets can fit the memory but real cpu + gpu + memory + architecture speed )
And this never actually got an RTX Ray tracing update on PC did it? I remember it was listed on Nvidia's original announcement as an early Ray Traced adopter of ray traced reflections?
RTX is not there. It was a Nvidia demo all along
Do you have a review on xsx and ps5?
I am testing it right now so to get the game to run at 60 fps on the ps4 pro set your ps4 pro resolution at automatic start the game and it does not matter if you are at the menu or in track go back to ps4 settings and set it to 1080p and the game will run at 60 fps this only work only if you have 4k setup
XBox One X supports variable refresh rates, doesn't it? Would this not help?
It would if they left a unlocked framerate that stayed above 45fps which is the the lower boundary of most viable rate monitors, but they capped the framerate.
2/24/22 is the date for the free upgrade from last gen console to current gen dedicated console version. (PS5/XBSX) If you OWN a PS4/XB1X version, the dedicated version for the new consoles will launch with higher resolution and higher fps and other graphical improvements. Is this one of those game where you put the slightest touch on the analog stick and the car basically rolls over? I'd like to try it but not if the physics are dumb.
Nope. Car physics are state of the art simulation and it's pretty playable with controller as well.
Just something about racing games i just cannot click with on a controller, i feel to enjoy them i would need the peripherals like gear stick, steering wheel etc. Also graphically with many racing games trees look weird along with crowds
Eastyy I’m with you, this game feels great on controller though
Absolutely beyond me why 1440p-1800p at 60 FPS wasn't the target for PS4 Pro and Xbox One X respectively.
it's commendable they were able to squeeze this onto current gen consoles with all physics intact, BUT my experience on the PS4 Pro has been enough of a problem, that i'm really not planning on spending **TOO** much time with it until I can play it on PS5/Series X. I have to say, though, when it does run decently, it's an incredibly deep and fun sim experience.... it just deserves better hardware
MSI MEG Trident X 10SD-867MYS is this a good Gaming PC to fully enjoy ACC on Ultra settings in 4K with 60 FPS ? ACC is not enjoyable on standard ps4 anymore, crashes when I drive at night with rain and 20 cars at SPA. Also stuttering allllll over. Give me your thoughts about that gaming pc I mentioned. It’s 2000 Euros so... doesn’t come cheap like 500 Euro PS5
can you tell me why my ts300rs wheel and pedals dont work or my controller?

It would maybe run 5 fps faster. But its again the cpu as the limiting factor.
ACC is just not well suited for consoles with that amount of physics.
Hey DF why have you stopped producing HDR videos? I quite liked them.
Also regarding this, i thought this looks like a letdown. The graphics pales in comparison to likes of the Forza and GT series and there's really no excuse to release it with the frame rate it is. Very sloppy.

Not much. The games low settings are just not very low. Thats it really.
Daytona USA was running at 60fps back in 1995. There is no excuse for this with modern racing games.
So did pong.
How do you go about releasing a game with a 32fps cap? I guess the developers didn't even bother to test the console version.
Crazy what a difference a do-it-all engine has compared to one that only has to do one job, GT Sport and Forza Motorsport really showed what is possible on current gen, but this ain't. 30fps on a sim circuit racer? Nope
With ACC you get state of the art car physics on a console. 30 FPS is the compromise they had to make for that. Also its not as unplayable as people claim, not perfect, but still very playable
Love how Tom says ans shows how much hardware you need for 1080p60fps on PC unlike Alex who just belittle consoles by saying/showing how it's so much better on PC without emphasizing the cost of the hardware or the time wasted tweaking the settings.
It takes 2 minutes to tweak settings. Alex is just being brutally honest about it. PC is indeed far far better.
Awesome! It takes more 2 minutes and will have to change it again after encountering unwanted drops when you progress in he game. Like i said PC isn’t a standard hardware configuration and you cannot aay PC is better without stating what the said PC is made off.
I forgot about this games console release
I disagree with 0:52, It doesn't take a high-end PC to run at 60fps, with 20 cars on track, I have a 300-400 dollars PC that runs it smoothly at a mix between epic and lower settings. Not the entire PC is new obviously, the GPU is a used RX 580 but everything else is new, its kind of annoying when people keep saying high end PC to run the game, no you don't need one
rx 580 is slightly more powerful than xbox 1 x gpu.
Also, The reason why this game runs poorly is because of weak cpus on consoles.
I found out that when you reach some unknown PC specs, you can run it with 10 or 60 cars on the grid with same FPS. Example: AMD 3600 (6 cores / 12 threads), 16 GB RAM, 5700, 1920x1080, all Epic except foliage and couple not needed settings. This can run at 120FPS without a problem. Older Intel 4770K@4.5Ghz (4 cores / 8 threads), 16 GB RAM, 580 and it struggles with one car in practice with lowest possible settings. Strange.
But what video didn't mention is that physics are the same as on PC. This is the most accurate sim on consoles. And if I look back when this game came out last year on PC it was terrible. Now I feel like it's a different game. I'm sure Kunos will polish ACC for consoles too.
It would be great to get an update on this running on PS5 and XBSS
What happens if you set the PS4 Pro to 1080p?
Surely using a Threadripper as apposed to a R9 CPU will hinder the performance on PC?
yeah the CCX latency is off-the-charts with the 1950X
How is the vrr on the xbox?
As an Xbox one player ACC is a paradoxical game for me, I find the racing addictive and and customisability great.
However, aside from the known frame rate issues there’s several aspects of this game which were actually better on the first Assetto corsa.
On a thrustmaster TMX the first game had a more linear steering with greater feeling and force feedback as well as the cars just feeling more authentically real and challenging to drive.

If the PS4 can go up to 40fps, then I wonder if the Pro and X could hold a 1080p 60fps mode ?
