They are trying to recreate the Xbox 360 moment where it launched earlier than PS3 and gained momentum. But that alone won't be enough. MS needs to have system sellers like the 360 had. Live service games don't sell consoles.

A perspective from a third world country resident. Moving from the 360 era to the Xbox 1, the Caribbean can be viewed as abandoned. Xbox Live support just suddenly stopped leaving all of the Caribbean to only have access to games via PlayStation. After some research it was clear that this didn't just happen to the Caribbean but also to other countries throughout Europe and some other areas. Which are now only dominated by Sony.

One of the biggest failings of series x and s is that it doesn’t feel like a next gen console because they’re sticking way to close to the look and feel of the Xbox One. I don’t think that has anything to do with it’s sales. PS is always going to outsell Xbox globally. Xbox has a massive player base in North America and isn’t a failure just because PS is more popular. Xbox has a lot of games coming and I believe this gen is showing more promise than last gen for Xbox. Sony will outsell it no matter what, that shouldn’t be the benchmark for whether or not the Xbox Series X is a success. The S however is not very powerful and not offer a current gen experience in most titles compared to XSX and PS5z I’m not a fan of what the Series S brings to the table in the Xbox lineup, mostly because it’s not a good value IMO. The Xbox Series X offers more value than the S if you consider how much more powerful it is and the disc drive for older BC titles is clutch. People see that the S is cheaper and jump on it without realizing how much better the X really is.

Nobody EVER buys Nintendo hardware for the hardware. Ever. It IS all about the games. To this day there are people denying this and try to argue that some superior features of one device should make it more successful than the competition, but that is just not how this works, or ever worked. Exclusive games sell hardware (and subscriptions).

If it's all about the games, then why did hardly anyone buy a Wii U? Heck, go back to before the Wii. The PlayStation sold 102 million consoles while the Nintendo 64 sold 32 million. The PS2 sold 158 million while the GameCube sold 21 million. It wasn't until Nintendo struck gold with the Wii motion control that they were able to sell 100 million units. No one liked the Wii U hardware, which is why that console tanked. But everyone loves the Switch hardware, which is why it's doing great. Plus, people prefer taking Nintendo games on the road, which we know because Nintendo has sold a ton of units of each of its handhelds since the original Game Boy. So yes, people buy Nintendo hardware for the hardware. If the hardware isn't right, people aren't going to buy it. They'll still sell a lot of games, though. I mean, the Wii U only sold 13 million units, but Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U sold 8 million copies.

One of the most important reasons switching sides is much much harder than the PS3/X360 era is the huge digital library most players have. Back then backwards compatibility was almost non-existent (except for first gen PS3s and extremely limited backwards compatibility of 360) and since all of the games were physical, you could easily trade them in. You can't trade your digital games in, so it's much harder to turn you back on thousands of pounds worth of games AMD switch sides.

Sony with the PS5 is closer to the PS1 and PS2 with software releases in that theyre relying heavily on third party exclusives. Sony didnt have the internal studios in the ps1/ps2 era, so a lot of the games that people think of when they think of the early playstations arent sony games. One obvious example is crash bandicoot. @@eugkra33 I'm no longer in the game industry but was for many years, so I can probably offer something authoritative here. Three main issues here why PS5 is typically on par or slightly better than the X despite the theoretical differences:
      1. GNM & GNMX do have a lower overhead typically than DirectX. Over simplification to some extent, but in general you're spot on with your analysis here, eugkra33.
      2. The Series S is what I would call a very "pro consumer" move by Microsoft. As someone who is a bit older now (I'm 48) with a lot of disposable income, I'm not so old that I don't remember what it was like to be a broke college student or a young dad on a very tight budget. I love that a gamer can shell out $249 for a Series S and 10 bucks a month for Game Pass and have a ton of gaming entertainment at their disposal.
However, the Series S has a significant negative impact on the Series X. Developers will ALWAYS code to the lowest platform and then scale up. Never the opposite. Devs being forced to code for the S have to make compromises on game design that the would not have to make if they were only developing for the X.
Again, I love the series S as a consumer and a once poor college student/young dad. As a hardcore gamer, I despise the S for what it's done to X development.
      3. Microsoft went "wide", Sony went "fast". High clock speeds are a big benefit for multiplat titles where studios are limited in the amount of customization work they can do for each platform.
Both approaches are valid and as a nerd, I kinda love that Sony and MS took different routes to solve the same problem. But it's just easier to get performance out of a "fast" architecture than it is with a "wide" architecture.
Unfortunately, we've had very few AAA exclusives for the Series X during its lifetime. Hopefully that will change as the generation goes on because a studio that's allowed to really focus on the Series X hardware is going to be able to build something beautiful. Ray Tracing scales extremely well across CU's and that's an area where the X has a large advantage over the PS5.
Hopefully we'll see one of MS' especially talented studios like The Coalition produce something truly spectacular on the series X (Gears of War 6!).

It actually very impressive what sony was able to do in the console space. Off the top of my head, i can't think of another company that came into an established industry and dominated with their very first product in that space.
Sony didn't even want their name attached to the OG playstation, fearing it would damage the 'maturity' of the brand.
Then the PS created an entirely new section of the market: for people who only thought games were for kids, they got true, mature 'cinematic' games.
Some people are saying the iPhone. Not even close. The OG iPhone obviously laid the groundwork for smartphones in general, but it was not acknowledged by the public at large, being seen as a fancy, expensive, too complex gimmick. It also only found success in the states.
There's an argument for the ipod, but I don't think it created the same social and cultural buzz as the playstation. And the ipod needed multiple iterations to break the first million-a-years sales.

Any brand without competition becomes lazy and expensive.

I agree with you that Microsoft don't seem interested in a new system, but at the same time I don't think gamepass the way they expect to have dibs on the concept will survive letting go of a console ecosystem. I hope they realise that before it's too late, and they've let Xbox as a platform dissolve for no reason.
Without that sort of foundational home for their stable of titles, gamepass is such a nebulous pitch all of a sudden. Why would you opt for gamepass on a playstation if Sony simply decide to get their own stuff on ps plus day 1? Would Microsoft at that point expect you to buy a gamepass sub and a Playstation to play Perfect Dark there instead of the newest God of War? There has to be something more to anchor the idea of being into Xbox stuff as a platform, even if they want to untether the platform from hardware.
When game streaming gets good enough I think there's a big chance that PC remains but console platforms are completely transposed to an app on your telly or whatever. If you can just get a gamepad for your telly and there's no discernible lag, at that point gamepass without hardware obviously makes 1000% sense, but until we get there I think there needs to be an Xbox *box*, too. And honestly, I think Microsoft realise that as well.

They also released them day and date on PC, which is the biggest platform for games. Sony, on the other hand, have to focus on systems sales because their games are available no place else like Nintendo's business model.
And we're starting to see from Sony own reports that might not be a sustainable model for them in the long run. @RekathonPrime I'm 90% sure that wasn't actually the PC version but rather just a dev build they were using PCs to create. This is very common practice for most of if not all AAA games, including first party console games. Another thing is the build was for multiple disconnected levels that appear to be vertical slices to test out the gameplay systems, so this is probably well before they actually produced a playable alpha or beta designed for target hardware

    • @RekathonPrime
      @RekathonPrime Před 6 měsíci +4

@@icedcapplord710 That's not the case here. The videos were vertical slices but the PC leak is a playable pre-alpha build. The dev unit uses a version of the same Linux based software that a PS5 use. It's not a PC using windows, that's why they have Nixxes Software porting the games over for them. And that's why when they are making games, they have different dev teams working on different versions of the game simultaneously. Otherwise they would just make a PC version from the start and adjust setting across all platforms.
Yes hardware wise they are very similar using x86 architecture. But software wise, they're very different. It's like how they have to make a Steam deck version of a game, not because the steam deck can't use windows. But because of the fact it don't use windows by default. It uses Linux and you need to port the games to Linux to get them to work with Steam OS. So the hack version of Wolverine that's floating around is a PC version of the game that Insomniac is developing in house. I would say maybe Nexus software was porting the game simultaneously while Insomniac was working on it, but Nixxes wasn't part of the hack.

So, I don't think console numbers mean as much as they did as they did during the x360 and ps3 era, because many on non Xbox hardware can play the current games on windows, or steam, or on anything able to run a web browser with gamepass.

It's probably because the consoles are just PC's now and combine that with the cost of game development, publishers are becoming hesitant to take risks. Practically every game is developed using one of the big four/five engines and the different hardware renders visuals so similar the differences are hard to tell apart. So, we have games that all run on the same engines, designed the same way and play and feel the same. Gaming is a boring as Hollywood now.

My main issue with consoles today is the requirement, directly or indirectly, for internet connection to servers to download the patches/actual game. Unlike DRM free PC games (when talking about digitals like from GOG), where you can install the game and the patches and play the frelling game without requiring permission from the servers, you can't really do that any more with console games as most of them require patches to be made even playable. Patches which you can't download and save, but instead you have to download them each time you install the game. That for me is one of the reasons I just stopped caring much about consoles after the PS4/XBONE generation. If I am going to have to do all the online connection poop, why not use my PC which I already have and will always have? Why buy a console? For the handful of exclusives which take 6 months to a year if not more to patch to be made worth playing? I rather wait for the PC version and play a finished game.
But that's just me. Clearly there are many others who don't think like me on this one. And whenever I post anything like this comment, there are those who come to the defense of said practices like if these companies were more user friendly it would take away from their games. Insanity.

The issue with Xbox Series S is that Microsoft clearly didn't think Sony was going to release a $400 PS5. Coming out at that price point with the same power across both sku's meant that both the XSX & XSS were over priced, especially when you consider the more powerful console on paper in Xbox often gets outpaced or exceeded in stability & performance by the PS5. Then XSX with no major exclusive games at launch and now it was never going to be successful against PS5.

Everyone is assuming the rumour is true, but I'm not convinced. I don't think MS have anything to gain by delivering another console. The leaked documents reinforced the belief that MS want out of the console race and think streaming is the only way they can build a user large enough to support the engagement they require. I think this idea of a new next gen Xbox console is just wishful thinking with the belief that Xbox would loose another toe to toe fight with Sony, so a release between PS5 Pro and PS6 would be a good strategy. But I don't think that is the plan. I think the leaked specs are for the Azure servers that will render and stream the games to a client app.
It fits with Phil Spencer's message. He wants everyone on every platform to be able to play Xbox games. There is only one solution that can do that and it is streaming via a Game Pass app on every device. It's a lot cheaper that developing a next gen console and there is no need to port games to it. Phil does not believe in console gens. An app has no gen. It is just software that gets updated. The server hardware can be continually updated like PC without affecting the users. No gens client side.

Times do change, Microsoft is probably looking *much* bigger picture for the Xbox brand then just competing on hardware, which is why I'm ok with a 2026 release. Sucks a bit to be honest, been there since 2001 with OG Xbox, but I'm old enough to understand the business, for better or worse.

In my opinion, probably one of the biggest reasons for the slow start for the new generation was all the mass buyouts that took place. It was impossible to get hold of a console in stores. Everything was bought up and then advertised for at least double the price. So it went on for about 18 - 24 months here in Sweden. It was only in 2023 that there were units available to buy in stores. This is definitely something that needs to be addressed. Which hasn't been done so far as far as I know.

I bought both next gen consoles in 2022.
I got my Series X at Costco.
Last time I went to Costco, they had a pallet, stacked two meters high with the new PS5.

Maybe the supply chain is better here.

Yeah, the bot farming was extreme. I bet most Xbox and PS5s were purchased during covid by bots or people trying to make a quick buck, just to be resold on various websites. (same with GPUs)
My brothers managed to buy an Xbox early on, and people tried to intimidate them into selling it to them when they picked it up from best buy.
I hope going forward, companies will make a queue akin to the cybertruck or other large launch. Have pre-orders as soon as they have the final projected specs, and do a first come first serve queue based on regions. As long as everyone has an order that wants one, bots won't really be able to re~sale/scalp as a business model. Production can then rise to meet demand for launch day.
Yes demand was high, but supply was cut last minute. Microsoft and Sony and every industry that decided to cancel chip orders (Automakers included) suffered huge needless self inflicted shortages. TSMC added 30% more wafer capacity during 2020.

I don't buy the whole "Xbox doesnt care about HW sales" argument, it is such an obvious PR spin by Microsoft imo. If they didnt care then why would they be selling Xbox at such agressive discounts, i think the Series X was 350 at some point? Also the Series S was intended to dominate the market with the lower price, plus how do they expect to grow Gamepass subs if not through the most loyal fans and new console owners?

    • @davidandrew6855
      @davidandrew6855 Před 6 měsíci

Well, if you have a lot of hardware already built, you paid for hat BoM, better to sell it and get something than for it to be sitting in a warehouse somewhere costing you money.
They will grow services and Game pass by offering it to more than just Xbox and PC, how that will be accomplished, who knows. It is evident, that with "only" selling around around 57M consoles last gen and this gen about half that much, they need to tap into other hardware bases for Game Pass. I suppose if they could get a greater majority of their userbase as customers, that would help, but you have to sell more hardware for that, and as long as PlayStation is a culture icon for the majority of gamers, that is a tough row to hoe, so to speak. They need more PC gamers to partake of Game Pass, that is a huge userbase.

Current consoles do and have 95% of the same games. Exclusives, subscription differences and whether your friends are on the same system is what makes a difference. I had a ps3/4 and got into the xbox bandwagon due to gamepass and backward compatibility. I dont feel neither console have created exclusives i really want (uncharted 4 was the seller for me on the ps4 era). Most of the games i have enjoyed recently are simply third party games.

  • @Killemwithkicks

Sony’s success is mostly tied to it’s mass appeal.
The number of people who buy PS for the exclusives is small compared to the number of people who own PS consoles. Most people buy it because it’s the popular thing to do. All their favorite streamers have one, all their favorite CZcamsrs have one, most big games are advertised in partnership with PlayStation and as a result, they buy PlayStation.
It’s incredible because the Series X IS an objectively better console, but Microsoft is gonna have a hard time breaking or reducing Sony’s pop culture significance.

What John has to understand is that the reason why Sony went away from certain franchises from the PS1 and PS2 era is because those games weren't that big for them. They did not sell as well as we think. Over the years, Sony has adapted to where the money is. Cant really blame them for that.

Another xbox will not help Microsoft 😂 when will they learn?
Microsoft after the 360 lost their vision of what gaming is and what its suppose to be. On top of that, their whole goal was to windows on a console which is thr dumbest idea ever because windows doesn't fit in a console economy system. Always online, DRM, no first party games, no new an creative games are being, I can go on forever from a hardcore gamer perspective and thrbmany things Microsoft is doing wrong. It's funny how I can see it but they can't 😂.
You want to know why Microsoft isn't successful with thr xbox brand? Watch the xbox documentary power on. Once I seen that documentary, I lost so much respect for Microsoft. They were never passionate about video games. Only a handful of people within Microsoft were true gamers and were big fans of the playstation and nintenso brands that brought the xbox dream to life, which almost didn't happen because of Microsoft.
Microsoft needs to bring back those true hardcore gamers back under their umbrella, that will lead them into a winning position.

New hardware costs the consumer money, obviously. If it is more expensive than current gen, will anyone want to pay for it without an extremely compelling software launch? Seems like the game lineup is the entire problem. There has got to be more to this story than just plans for new hardware.
