The 30 Note Music Box Set allows you to create your own tunes, which you do by punching holes in a long strip of paper. The music box has a range of just over 3 octaves, and it plays a scale that is mostly chromatic.
As well as a fun way to learn about music, there are also some serious musicians out there who are using the music box, including the UK musician Hannah Peel - see • The Music Box you hear...
There is also an app that has been written that allows you to test out new songs and compositions, and when you are happy with the result, you can print out a guide to help you punch out the paper strip.
Most of the toys we show on this channel are from Tim's collection, and are not for sale. But sometimes we show an item that you will find in our online toy shop. See - www.grand-illusions.com/30-no... - Věda a technologie
Be sure to try upside down and backwards. You can even tape the whole strip into a mobius strip and it will switch between forward and back!
if I'm not mistaken, making it into a mobius strip would have the music box alternate between the normal track and its "inverted harmony" version (the highest notes becoming the lowest and vice versa)
pretty neat
I did this with the version of happy birthday that came with my one and it sounded strangely good
J.S. Bach did a few pieces like this; as I understand it, the term is "melodic inversion".
Tim is really one of those internet treasure one of a kind thing. So glad he's out there in the world to share his passion with us.
BEAUTIFUL choice of music for that demonstration, you've picked out, Tim! And yes.... I **CAN**picture the ballerinas dancing to that!
You have *bold* and _italics_ on youtube
For some reason bold isn't showing up on my phone
I've seen the pre-made music boxes before that only play one tune but I have never seen one like this, so many different songs you could play, thank you so much, Tim!
Omg ENA!!!
I love music boxes. They remind me of my lovely grandmother.
Woah, that's a neat little music box. Thanks for sharing Tim
tim, maybe someone can punch out the "grand illusions" theme song?
What a great thought for the next intro!
I have a smaller one of these and found a web site that provides graphic files for punching these strips. They have a 100's of old and new tunes.
Lovely playing Tim
If you insert the paper strip backwards, does the music box say "Paul is dead?" 😳
Cant wait to hear its beauty.
1:20 😮
keep going Tim!!! Your vids are the best! :)
OH MY GOD I HAVE THAT ONE !!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ That's so cool I love it 😭😭
Really beautiful, this sound is very nostalgic and the best music box songs I've heard, kind of want to own this right now !
Fascinating!
A favorite thing from my grand-mom to my father there has been this Christmas decoration of a church that have one playing 'silent night' and it's the real thing that makes me feel Christmas has arrived.
Wow, I actually want one of these now, this seems awesome!
Thanks Tim!
It sounds wonderful
Very cool instrument.
What a nice little music box and a wonderful piece of music to use as a demonstration. I wonder, though, if it could be played backwards if you wind it the other way?
Love it
I love the chunky chiptune intro, but I was NOT expecting the jumpscare at the end
Super cool
For a moment i thought yyou were going to rick roll us but its jolly good
I mean, you could buy one and rick-roll people. Start off with "Swan Lake" and switch to "Never Gonna' Give You Up" partway through. Though people of a certain age are so attuned to the gag they might see it coming just from the punch-pattern.
amazing device
I'd be interested in seeing a complete composition made for just this instrument.
Grandy Nice 🎶
I would love to loop the paper, place it in a weather proof box and attach fan blades then place in your yard. Songs instead of jumbled chimes when the wind blows. Wind speed drives the tempo.
It's a great piece for learning some basics for music composition. I have a 15 note one myself, no accidentals but it's very beautiful
Brilliant show Tim. Ive seen a few pre made boxes with handles and it plays a set tune, but amazing you can create your own.
I want one
This was so freaking cool! I would love to have one of these. I'd be making different little songs for it constantly
That's so cool it's almost not a toy.

Anyone else immediately thought of those FNAF 3 secret minigames when hearing that Swan Lake msuic box song?
Stayed up all night once tryihg to transcribe my own song onto the punched paper, damn near felt like I had arthritis by the end of it, I put it in the end to start it and the plastic gear chewed itself up and broke
I struggle with alignment for mine. anybody got any tips? I do mark with a pencil, but it's still hard for me to judge how to space my notes.
Yep one look up music box maniacs. They do midi conversions and let you hear roughly what it will sound like.
Two of you're doing a lot then switching to a hammer and punch is much easier. Just tape down the ribbon, line up the punch and bonk, hole cut exactly where you wanted. You quickly place bonk, place bonk ... Job done in no time.
Do use a cutting mat or board or you'll have holes in your work top.
the paper might last a lifetime but i doubt those plastic gears will
I am so happy to see Tim still going after all the years of doing this
Aha! What you DIDN'T tell us is who created this polyphonic and chromatic masterpiece of engineering?
Absolutely brilliant. Wonderful indeed! 🌟👍
Wintergatan would like to have a word with you...
Swan lake😊
What a great way to update an archaic music box.

I’ve seen versions of these that are battery powered or wind up too, so you don’t have to constantly crank them.
I’d be the one to mess it all up!
