Chung Kyung-wha is the 'empress of the violin.'
In 1957, Korea was still reeling from the war when nine-year old Chung performed Mendelssohn's concerto with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Still a young girl, she made her mark when she was featured on 'Musical America,' the oldest classical music magazine in the US, which declared her a violin prodigy.
In 1961, when she was 13, she was admitted to the school of music at Juilliard. There, she studied under the great Ivan Galamian. In 1970, she made her European debut in London. Her performance of Tchaikovsky's concerto made her an instant star. She was 21 years old. She went on to perform with orchestras in Europe, North America and Japan and worked with legendary conductors in virtuoso performances.
A perfectionist and a consummate professional, she played 120 performances a year. They called her the 'sorceress on the violin.' Then in 2005, Chung injured her finger and was unable to play. After years away, she made a comeback in 2011, and is now as active as ever before. Driven by passion and a sense of liberation, Chung Kyung-wha is experiencing her second golden age. She knows how to command the stage, but this week, she shares her message of hope with us on [Heart to Heart].

한국전쟁의 상처에서 헤어나지 못했던 1957년, 당시 9살의 정경화는 서울시립교향악단과 멘델스존 협주곡을 연주했으며, 미국의 오케스트라가 내한했을 때 리허설 도중 선보인 어린 소녀 정경화의 바이올린 연주가 음악 전문 잡지[뮤직 아메리카]에 실리면서 '신동'이라는 평가를 받았다.
1961년, 13살에 전액 장학생으로 미국 줄리어드 음대에 입학, 바이올린의 거장 '이반 갈라미언'의 수제자로 공부한 그녀는 1970년, 런던에서 차이콥스키 협주곡 연주로 유럽 데뷔에 대성공을 거두면서 순식간에 스타로 떠올랐다. 완벽주의 프로정신으로 연간 120회의 연주 스케줄을 소화해내며 '현의 마녀'로 불렸다.
하지만 지난 2005년, 손가락 부상으로 바이올린을 손에서 놓게 됐는데..
공백기를 딛고 2011년 연주활동을 재개한 정경화는 현재 전성기 못지않은 왕성한 활동을 펄치고 있다.
