Nutrition or pacing - which is more important for Ironman triathlon?

    • @richardhudson4649

For us age groupers who are not racing for a KQ but racing to finish, or a 13hr or 12hr finish time
      Nutrition.
Nutrition can stop you in your tracks if you haven't taken in enough carbs. If you get your pacing wrong, you have left a few minutes on the table, or have had to walk a kilometer or 2. While neither is ideal, they won't stop you from finishing. (
Training with the actual fuels you are using on race day is critical. I learned several things during training:
      1) I love drinking water while I am biking.
      2) I can do solid food while biking.
      3) I don't like the taste of liquid nutrition (Hammer, Infinit etc)
      4) I need slightly more than 1 gel/half hr while running
On course nutrition is great, but don't drink the Gatorade if you haven't stopped for Gatorade in the middle of your long rides. Get to know how many gels you need while you run.
I will further refine those things next season when I re-start my training for another Ironman and a couple of 70.3s.

      Nutrition.
2 Long Course races done and both times I've gotten it wrong. (and it bit me during the run)Despite practicing in training, I think that because AGers tend to do 1 maybe 2 a year we don't get much chance to practice race day nutrition once you've been under stress for 9+ hours

Finally, Dave. Absolutely stunning performance in Kona. He’s got a Kona 1st place in his locker.

Holy Cow. I just realized from his commentary about calories in (4:33 - 6 gel packets?) That I massively under estimated my caloric needs. 40 miles I use 1500 calories but only take in 90 or a little more. Glad I watched this. Thank you!

Hi GTN. I have been watching loads of your videos. One questioin i cant find the answer to is. Do people carry gels with them on the run or do they just take them from the assist stations? Would be hard to carry all the gels needed for a marathon. If your tri suit doesnt have pockets what do you do?

In Kona the reflectors on the Queen K are 40 feet apart (roughly 13.5m) considering a bike is roughly 1.5m long the pro athletes and referees are told to use the reflectors. There is an article somewhere on line called "Kona's Secret Rule" (I think thats right) about it.
