  • New York has deployed hundreds of National Guard troops to its subway network to tackle a boom in violent crime.
In what is believed to be a first, 750 National Guard soldiers will assist the New York City Police Department in patrolling the subways and conducting bag checks.
New York's Democratic governor Kathy Hochul also announced on Wednesday that 250 state troopers will be sent to help out too.
While commuters have the right to refuse to have their bag checked by the guards, the officers can subsequently deny them access to the subway, Ms Hochul said.

Doesn't need to be soldiers, but yes additional police. Police already do random mass stop search and they work. I remember case where young male was caught with zombie/massive knife. He was actually on bail for being involved in prior stabbing to the leg, survived (I think drugs were involved). So the issue is funding, police numbers, (and bail until trial and monitoring after if appropriate). (I don't think that individual was electronic tagged.) Same with other crimes, prior domestic abuse convictions, latest relationship reports violence and threat to their and family's life, he gets bail and kills her, her new partner and rapes, held captive another woman. If theirs enough evidence or prior convictions, the person shouldn't be on bail, those on bail, electronically tagged and CCTV monitored. Police do searches at buses, trains, random locations and schools. They have the mobile technology for it not to be physical.

We have had this for like 10 year or more in Italy. They call it “safe street operation” but it is mostly to hide the issue of manpower shortages within the police forces, beside, the soldiers deployed do not have police power so they need joint patrols with the actual police force. I also don’t see the point in sending around towns soldiers equipped in full war gear and military grade weapons when they can’t use said weapons for obvious reasons. I personally see this as a huge failure regardless of the country.

Yes there has been crime from them as well but the subway violence including shootings, stabbings, pushing people onto the tracks in front of trains, physical assaults etc. have been locals with a history of mental illness and criminal behavior. Many states in the US took away funding for mental health facilities where these people need to be so they live on the streets or in bad areas and when they assault someone they are let out of jail pretty quickly. Many "weekend warriors" end up bringing their military duties with them into the week one way or another, but they don't always get paid for it. Not to mention lots of Active Duty people transfer into the Guard or Reserves and bring that experience with them. And those not formerly Active Duty have civilian experience and education they bring to the table. Some Active Duty folks don't even train that much depending on their job.
