That's crazy, lucky you had a good chain ring and it didn't taco. I've never had this happen, I use purple loctite on my chainring bolts, just 12Nm of force to break it free, no chance of rust or coming undone, no chance of getting stuck cause its so weak.

Mine come loose sometimes. When I pump the tires I always check the axle nuts/bolts, and just grab each chainring bolt and make sure they aren't spinning. If they aren't, it's likely tight enough, but it's always smart to tighten them. Yesterday I swapped pedals and they had loosened over time and came off with with no resistance, I hadn't been checking them. If you ride all the time, make sure you are checking bolts/nuts regularly, especially on fixed gear. Headset, and handlebars can come loose too, check them as well. That's a guaranteed crash if the drops swing forward on you.

its not unusual for a single bolt to come loose without noticing--not a bad idea to have some spares if you know that you're riding fast and hard. you did the right thing and went to get a replacement as soon as you could!
Happend to me one time on my Omniums. Didn't hurt but replaced it asap and checked the rest. If memory serves me 1 other was super loose. Ride safe.
Once riding in Georgia in mountains brakeless I returned home with only 3 untightened chainring bolts .. I had heard sounds but I thought it was chain or smth else. .. lucky I finished it with no issues

Had this problem: I was riding on the highway and all of a sudden I felt like something had fallen off. At least there are 4 more bolts rest)

I knew this can happen. I one rode my fixed gear in a rock trail and it twisted the chain. My mechanic told me that it should break the chain ring bolt and the chain too
