The thing is, you can't accuse Rammstein of being hypocritical here. Yes, they do go pretty hard on the US in this song, but they go WAY harder on Germany itself in their song Deutschland.

The Mikey Mouse line has a double meaning: on the one hand , it is a reference to the Disneyland Paris theme park, on the other hand to France as ally of the US. In general Rammstein saying that too much culture of many countries in the world are getting americanized and so they are losing a big part of their idendity and culture. In the video it is visualized with the people in traditional clothing eating junk food. The muslim praying in the direction of an oil fiels is another aspect: America's thirst for oil. Most of the oil is from the middle east and oil became the new god.
Also, the lyrics are about political influence of America: The U.S. want to "lead the dance", and "those who don't want to dance don't know yet they have to". This is a direct reference to the gulf war in 2003, when some states like France and Germany refused to join a war against Iraq because they were not convinced that Saddam Hussein was involved in the 9/11 attacks or got WMDs.

I really felt this...in the years since like 2011, I've been inside and outside the US, living in two different countries besides the States. And it was PAINFUL realizing that while America is pretty great--it is also pretty fkn evil and terrible. All the rest of the Western world has better governments, as in social safety nets and multi-party systems. NZ was the first country to give women the right to vote, and the Netherlands was the first country to give rights to homosexuals. Meanwhile, the US has 700 military bases OUTSIDE the US and has supported evil dictators as long as they weren't Commies. I mean--it really hurt learning these things. I love the US...but we just simply aren't the heroes we claim to be. We've done amazing wonderful progressive things but at some point we kinda stopped.

I don't claim we Are now or have ever been perfect or ever will be.... But we're always trying to be better
Than our past selves. We stopped participating in wars of conquest for territorial expansion a long time ago.
That is why at the end of the day worldwide. We are still the best deal going.....
The American dream is not dead. It is just hard to see for those who refuse to believe in its pursuit.....

MAYBE you should have looked up when the Song was published?
It came at the time of the illegal war of aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan
The song was a protest against these wars.
And then the comment "coming from a guy, they have bad things in their closet" . It's called whataboutism.
There was once. Our Generation (born in the 80s) has nothing to do with it.
But you're 40 years old, how much BS has America made during your lifetime/ generation?
And how much crap has Germany in the last 40 years? Yeah.
America from the state illegal drone wars, NSA wiretapping scandal around the world even heads of state, Guantanamo torture camp, illegal wars of aggression over 2 million dead thanks to Bush and Obama. Millions of refugees from the Middle East, that don't come to the USA but to Europe, because of the US foreign politics
And Germany on the other side? Last 40 years? I wait.
Many countries can certainly criticize Germany for the time of World War II, but certainly not USA.
USA, with genocides against the Native Americans, with slavery, racism, the only country that dropped atomic bombs on people.
Countless illegal wars of aggression and regime changes and mostly democratically elected president were changed against fascists, like the e.g. In Chile with the philanthropist Augusto Pinochet
The Germans are processing their past, including the bad times. Those times are not only taught here at school on a permanent basis.
There are so many actions in society, the famous stumbling stones, e.g. how many such actions are there in the USA?
Or how much is taught in American schools about the genocide of Native Americans,, slavery, racism, atomic bombs, Diskrimination against the German and Japanese Americans during and after WWI and WWII?
Operation paperclip, how much is taught in US schools about the bad side of the US?
And: After rammstein loved to play in the US at the end of the 90s, they noticed how society and mood in the country became so hostile towards foreigners after 2001, that they didn't play a single concert in the US for ten years.

The line that hit's the hardest in this song is "I don't speak my mother's tongue." So many children in school have been cautioned against or straight up punished for not speaking English through the years. While some families have maintained 2 or 3 languages within the home, a lot of people do not due to pressures from many different directions. It is better now, but we still have a full generation who grew up with things like the Native schools that tried to eliminate Native American culture and history via indoctrination. My boss is Creole but can't speak it anymore because she was sent home with letters about how it was rude to speak in a language no one else understands in grade school.

    German person here:
I loosely translated a few key lyrics:
“When we dance I want to lead, even when you’re by yourself when you’re turning
Let us control you a bit
I'll show you how to walk right”
    - “We” are the countries, the lyrical I is the USA.
“We create a lovely round dance
All violins play the sound of freedom
Music comes from the White House
And in front of Paris stands Mickey Mouse”
    - the USA sees itself as the liberator of the world, when in truth “freedom” is just their metaphor for conquering the world through war and economical invasion
“I know the very useful steps
And I will protect you from missteps
And who does not want to dance at the end
Does not know that he must dance”
    Those lines highlight that especially.
It points to the massive global propaganda for the desirability of the Americanization that the US is working really hard to push so that no one ever realizes that the US is actually working on their empire.
I mean war in the name of freedom in Iran, Iraq, Syria,
Economical invasion of South America and Africa, troops still stationed in Japan, Germany and the likes, and those are the most obvious conquests…?
I love the US for its people but when you visit countries like Mexico and Venezuela, and you see all the poverty that is created by corruption that is pushed by American investors and you see how they privatize local water resources and then proceed to sell Coke for less than water, you start to seriously dislike the system “USA”.

in 1952 the occupation officially ended, but Japan agreed to continue to host American military bases (which are still there today).. the big breakthrough was in 1954 when America agreed to Japan's right to defend itself and allowed them to establish the JSDF (Japan Self Defense Force ) which are still limited to equipment and technology precisely through Article 9
so the second statement is not a lie, but just a confirmation of what I say... given the factor that they cannot have a proper army because of you, they have to rely on your dubious help despite the fact that they don't want you there (which is proven by the amount of protests and efforts to shut them down)

I absolutely love them! Saw them in LA last September.... hands down best show I have ever experienced. You might want to check out some of their "making of" videos..... behind the scenes with the band members, directors and others while making the videos.... they are a lot of fun to watch, including the one for this song. They are saying that it isn't a love song, due to the American culture infiltrating just about every other country... and not always for the common good of that country's culture.

This song is largely about the USA only being about itself. I mean I'm glad I was born in West Germany. Only 3 km from the East German border. And our people are really grateful to you Americans for liberating us from the Nazis. We will never forget that. Just sometimes you could be a little more humble. If you are criticized even a little, you will immediately become angry. You're immediately sensitive. I know. My country Germany has taken on a very heavy burden. There is no excuse for what happened back then. However, you can only do one thing. Working through all of these things. And anyone who has ever been to Germany and Europe knows that Germany (fortunately) processes its history very well, in contrast to some other countries that have never done so. They also committed genocide. Millions of times too. I'm just thinking of Turkey and the Armenian genocide. Or Russia's Stalinist purges. Nothing is processed there. But there are many more that could be mentioned. Because if you don't deal with your shameful deeds, there will never be any improvement.

Every citizen has a responsibility to critique their country. If that idea seems unfathomable, uncomfortable or offensive, we need to ask ourselves why. Is it due to ingrained beliefs, societal judgement, fear of loss of face or something else? Critically analysing your own country is not an act of hatred; it is how responsible citizens create a better version of it. No nation is perfect; if it were, then the notion of creating 'a more perfect Union', for instance, would be redundant.

In Germany (especially in the West), people take a very critical look at war in school - especially at their own inglorious past. Rammstein, as an East German band, do the same - a good thing!

Rammstein's songs are not divided into good or bad. Nor is it a "diss" to America. It is criticism. Both positive and negative. America, like every country, has a history of cruel and compassionate moments. The video itself shows America as the messenger of peace, leading and giving to other nations. If you only listen to the song once in passing, you might miss the critical part because everything looks like "good vibes". The part "this is not a love song" is not meant to express hate, but to make it clear that it is not a hymn of praise.

FYI: AS a Gen X'er with a Wonderbra they were the absolute BIGGEST brand on the fucking planet at the time.
It was a ridiculously expensive(yet no where near the price of modern day SpanX)padded push up bra that had actual liquid filled pouches in the bra for a "more natural feel and fit".
Women would fight like they trying to get a Cabbage Patch Kid in the '80's when the first came out.
I wore it for about a week but it I honestly didn't need it so I went "fuck it" and back to a normal bra cause God overly blessed me in my chest.
You have absolutely no idea how revolutionary just the idea of anything other then heavy cotton or poly padding was.
If anyone likes SpanX kneel to the alter of the old Wonderbra because that is where it came from.

As a german, many meanings got lost in translation.. the song tells about how amercian see themselfs.. the pictures though show the real impact. Like the boys with coke and burgers are a symbol of how the unhealthy fastfood made it to ... 3. world countries... the thing about Rammstein is theres alwas a 3. Deep meaning, resulting of the chosen german words.. hard to explain. The fast food thing for example is just a way of telling about the aggressive "you have to adopt like we want it to" for example the extrene agressive launching of McDonalds chains all over the world. This would even get deeper into the " world police role".. but I will end it here..
However, the difference is how the government and shool system teaches you mainly the good things about america or internal problems.. but the rest of us see and feel the ongoing problems made by the US (Government and big companies)
