- How to burn the gas out of a flooded car, diagnose the reason why, and fix it so it doesn't happen again. This how I get a car to start, what I do, and look for when a car turns over, and doesn't want to start when it is below zero degrees.

Much appreciated. Excellent diagnostics and overview of troubleshooting fixes.
Thanks , for the video it save me money!! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
You've got fantastic info in this case.
I have made a lot of cold junk run. Thanks for watching.
Great bumper work
I'm digging that bumper work too.

Frankenstein stitches are a good look. It was so cold here the power steering in my trusty '97 Maxima didn't want to work right. OKAY BYE!
Scared car but bolid one to faith it....thanks!
Hey , just wanted to say , I couldn’t get my dodge to start for anything because of the cold . You’re relay fix worked and my truck is running thanks to you’re knowledge. It worked thank you.
Thanks
Ubetcha!
You make a good point about battery testers, even the new style that apply ac voltage require a proper charge and adequate temperature. I keep hearing about "clear flood mode", in some vehicles, where WOT when starting causes the fuel injectors to shut off. Which manufacturers?
My 2000 Ford mustang GT shuts off fuel injectors if you hold the pedal down any at all to prevent a flood situation. All you have to do is push down the clutch pedal and turn the key to start. I’ve heard a mechanic say all newer cars with fuel injection and computer controlled have that feature to prevent someone from pressing on the gas pedal and flooding the engine.
Any answers outthere
My 99 firebird 3.8 on coldorn will crank and hit but until the sun ces out and warms it wount start
Bought a e36 and unfortunately it’s giving me so many issues during the winter. Sucks because it was fine but then it got warm again so I stopped driving it daily (I like winter drifting and when it got warm all my spots lost all the snow) and then the one day it got to -18 I didn’t wanna go anywhere and just stay in the warmth of my home. Fucked up because my few buddys that all have a e36 and daily them all winter haven’t had any issues with there’s starting in the winter. My car was mint and drove and started like a dream but then winter hit. I also can’t even plug my fucking car in because BMW don’t come with engine block heaters. I’m waiting for my mechanic buddy to help me out at least get it started (battery was fine last night so we unplugged it so it didn’t drain) and said we will be able to get it started when it’s warmer out, now the next day my battery is almost completely dead, like even more dead than my old battery. May go back down to try a few other things but don’t think I can do much without him. If I can get it started I’ll drive it to my actual mechanic that’s done all the work on that car, just don’t wanna have to tow it
How do I get the ECT and the IAT to read the same? Just change the Engine Coolant Temp sensor?
It needs to be dead cold. Leave it sit for 8 hours in same outside temp. They should be within a couple degrees.
99 tahoe 5.7
Cold start problem with jumping rmps, kinda feels like a misfire.
Once truck is warm it will run fine an start fine.
Changed: cap, rotor, wires, spider injectors, coil an module in front of the coil. Any ideas?
I would be looking at IAC duty cycles, and make sure the passages, and throttle body is clean, check o2 function, and fuel trim values, as a start.
So what do I do simply?
It depends. I tried to explain that out.
Truck won't start , was running good before the cold hit. Changed plugs and wires and acts like it wants to just won't. Hope it will start when warms up . Not sure what to do next , don't want to keep pumping money into it. 99 f150. Maybe frozen fuel? Was running good , I have put 40 thousand on it and haven't done much to engine. Just over 200k. Recently just changed oil , could be thick because of cold?
I would make sure iat, and ect are reading the same temperature when engine is cold. Pull a plug. If you have been cranking it over, and it won't start, the plug should be soaking wet.
@Rust Belt Auto newbie here, in Nebraska. My car started when it was -19 a few days ago no problem, just started right up. It's warmer today. It started this morning too with no issue. Tried to start tonight when it was 34⁰ and now I can't get it to start. I have crank, but no ignition. My fuel pump is engaging. I primed it. Battery is only a year old and all lights work. Terminals and cables seem to be fine. Rpms are measuring upon crank about 300 to 400 ish? Compression seems fine. I haven't noticed any misfiring, but for full disclosure, my engine light has been on since I got it. It's a clunker that has never had serious issues, but she has her quirks. I've been watching mechanic videos for hours as well as talking to some tech friends. I don't have tools or anything, sadly. It seems like it wants to start. It acts like it's gonna take off, but never does. I tried to give it a bit of gas when it acted like it was going to, to see if I could make it grab, but it had absolutely no effect whatsoever. I have 3/4 tank of gas. If I can't get it to start tomorrow, I'm going to check fuel pressure. I know the pump is getting power, but that doesn't mean there isn't a clog or something.
To be honest, I have no idea how old the plugs and wires are. I know that it's a 2003 malibu with 170k on it, and that she was rode hard and put away wet before I got ahold of her. I'm hoping it's something easier like plugs and/or plug wires, and not a crappy alternator killing my battery or anything like that. I'll tell you though, trying to start a car in the snow, in the dark, isn't fun.
@Lindsay K best to not add to the confusion. Check fuel, check spark, check air.
Does this apply to a 2000 vette, Every time its 50 cold outside car wont start, but when temps reaches 70 warmer it starts every time..
Will replacing the air intake temp sensor work, maybe its defective?
@@kenken4153 I do these checks every time there is a cold start issue on every vehicle.
If you hold the throttle wide open the injectors are cut out so no more fuel goes in, you don't have to disconnect the fuel pump. If the car cranked for 5 minutes the battery can't be bad. Those sparkplugs are done, new ones will help. Too bad people won't take their cars in while they are still running and get some servicing done before it gets cold. Tow jobs aren't cheap. If the ECT shows the temp. a lot warmer than the IAT on a completely cold car I would be suspicious of the temp. sender. The computer thinks the engine is a bit warm and won't enrich the fuel mixture, something like on an old car with the choke stuck open.
I will agree with almost all of that. Pretty sure some cars don't allow a fuel cut at Wot while cranking. That would be in the programming. I try it on GM's mostly, and it seems to just flood the car even worse. Few others too. Old TBI's were really bad. When I worked for assholes, I got about 5 of these a year, all flooded out in extreme cold. This is how I delt with almost all of them. Thanks for watching.
Frozen battery for one. Check the main 4 & then check what's working & rule it out.
Crank no start=frozen battery?

*FIX: A failed TEMPERATURE SENSOR to the ECU for the FUEL iNJECTION.*
I threw $400 at a 1995 Isuzu 2.3L FI trying to solve the cold start issue. tRUCK WOULD ONLY START IF ABOVE 65 DEGREES OUTSIDE TEMP. i REPLACED Fuel pressure reg, fuel pump, filters, plugs, wires, dizzy cap, etc.Below 65 degrees, I needed a shot of starting fluid, then it would "hunt" until it warmed up.
A year later.. a $10.35 sensor from Amazon.
Was it coolant sensor
@@goldnbrief8917 Is that a question or a statement? I don't see a "?" mark.
You could call it a "coolant sensor", as I had to drain the anti-freeze down 1/2 way. It's a coolant temperature sensor for the fuel injection brain/Electronic Control Unit (ECU). It was next to the coolant sensor for the engine temperature gauge.
@@jeffrandolf5673 so the reason it didn't start was because the coolant sensor be needed to be replaced and coolant fluid?
My car will not start when cold in the morning and diagnostic ran instrument cluster no ecm communication
@@goldnbrief8917 Yes. The reason it would not start on COLD mornings was because the coolant sensor to the fuel injection ECU was BAD (needed to be replaced)... it would not send a signal to the Fuel injection BRAIN/ECU to tell it to ADD FUEL(enrich) because the engine was COLD. Like a CHOKE on a carburater, the choke, chokes down air so engine gets more fuel to start, as COLD engines need more fuel to start. But, on fuel injection engines, the temp. sender sends a signal to the FI ECU to tell the fuel injectors to ADD more fuel when cold. When the out door temp was ABOVE 65 degrees farenheit, it would start no problem. Only on COLD mornings, >65 degrees or lower, the engine would not start.
Edit: if I gave it a shot of starter fluid on COLD mornings, it would start... sputter for a breif second, then run fine. But on cold mornings, I needed starter fluid to help it start. After the engine warmed up & stayed warm, it would start normally all day long... as long as the engine temp did not go below around 65 degrees or so.THERE ARE 2 TEMP. SENDERS. One for Fuel injection ''brain'" & one for temperature gauge on dashboard.
@@jeffrandolf5673 Did you experience any other symptoms such as poor, hesitant acceleration? Somewhat jerky at times? Sporadic, intermittent misfire. Not continuing like plugs or wires. My girl's 2012 Malibu has been doing this, and also doesn't start when cold outside, cranks like hell just won't fire up. Will start fine as it gets warmer.
