What Makes A Car Sound Good? | The Exhaust System Explained

- Sound is a very important part of the driving experience. Without the sound of a powerful V8, V10, or V12 engine revving as you drive, a little bit of the car's soul is lost. So what goes into the creating the perfect exhaust system for each car?
The exhaust system explained: After a cylinder fires, the exhaust manifold receives the wastes fuel and gases. They are then sent to the catalytic converter, where toxins are removed. After that, some cars will have an exhaust crossover to help even out the flow of exhaust from each cylinder bank. The muffler reduces the engine's noise, and then a resonator may perfect the final sound.
The muffler plays a very important role in determining the final exhaust note. Most mufflers involve a series of chambers where the sound waves are bounced around and reduced using friction. Many sounds actually get cancelled out in the process. By engineering the muffler to cancel out some noises but not others, manufacturers can actually decide exactly how they want the engine to sound.
But the muffler is not the only deciding factor in what your car sounds like. The number of cylinders, their firing order, and engine displacement can all affect the engine sound. In addition, things like tailpipe size and length can change the final tone.

The exhaust manifold or "header" is the most important factor in dictating the sound , the muffler aka silencer is more of a volume control tool. Resonators are often to cancel out drone. You can make a Chevy v8 sound like a ferrari or a dump truck depending on the header primary length , diameter , and arrangement at the collector..
Can you tell me more on this man ?
Can you make a 4 cylinder sound like a dump truck?
@@woooose Isuzu makes a 5.4L 4-cyl dump truck
@NickKautz Can I make my INLINE 4 N/A 1.2L Petrol Engine sound like a V10 if i change my exhaust manifold?
I don't think so but there are 5-cyl Audi and Volvo engine's that sound like a v10. @@SS-cv4fo
Awesome dude, the more you know. Thanks a lot it’s a very well put together video.
Thanks for the video, been trying to explain why I'm like "that sounds fucking nice" when I car with a nice exhaust drives by
Great explanation on the exhaust system! You explained it well, thumbs up!
I normally don't leave a comment but damn your were informative, left and right I was learning something. Nothing deceotive about this video, I love it
I’ve never thought about this topic, but when I saw it I was so interested.
Very very informative. Thank you
beautifully explained! Thank you!
Great video
Which modified exhaust system would make the loudest noise on a 2013 Honda Accord coupe V6?
No
@@QuickshiftCars, this answer doesn’t make any sense.
@@nikolebrandi why do you want it to be the loudest? Why not sound pleasing?
Electric cutout..or side exit
Best exhaust sound at idle. F430 and not the SCUDERIA. Also the DBS ASTON MARTIN for a V12 engine
Just use Flowmaster model 44.mufflers
Displacement, rpm limit, compression, and fuel type also impact the sound a lot! Still waiting for a company that builds kits to mate 2 liter bike engines into a 2.0 v8... sigh, some day.
Hi I have a 2012 slk 250. Tiny little 1.8L turbocharged 4cylinder and i wanna know how I could make it pop and of course how to make it sound better, like how to change the tone of the car... if that’s possible
Do a search for 'SLK 250 straight pipe' 👍
soooo. I can't get a V6 to sound like a ferrari? I like the high pitch yawn sound of a 458 and not the load throaty guzzling sound of a mustang.
Most exotic sound you can get with a v6 is having a exhaust for each bank without joining at any point. Where usually a v6 with both header joining to one pipe or an x-pipe it will sound like a 350z if you don't have the headers join at all you get the sound of 2, 3 cylinders
Ferraris sound better because it uses a Flat-plane crankshaft design vs Cross-plane crankshaft.
Don’t you lie on the Doritos name.
😂 this doesn't explain what makes it sound good. it just talks about rasp, nothing throaty
