Cheap Volvo Key replacement without programming

  • Instead of paying to program a new shell to replace my only broken key, I decided to transfer the transponder to allow the shell to work in the ignition. This transponder is extremely fragile and if broken may not work in the ignition. Cutting down the middle provides a weak spot away from the transponder to split the casing.

Great video, exactly what I needed! The 2006 Volvo V50 T5Sport Wagon has a new key!!

I used an axacto knife and it takes awhile but managed to open it enough to get out the little glass piece and put it in the new key fob I bought on amazon and it works great! No more tape, yay!

Thanks for answering the hundred bucks question in my head - do I really need to disassemble the tip of the key and how does the transponder fits in the tip of the new one.
    Thanks again!
brb - calling my friend Ali the not-so-Express to order a shell.

Hi @Hack Shack 603- When a tech/locksmith "programs a new key" they are programming this glass transponder?

2006 Volvo S40 2.41 question. my key fell apart one day (second hand car and the screw was missing on the key case, so I had previously taped it. However the tape failed) So, reassembling, and I put in a new CR2032 and the ignition works, but the lock/ unlock doesn't work. any ideas?

Without seeing the condition of the inside of the key, I would check the battery installation to make sure it is correct and that there is solid contact with its housing. If not the battery, perhaps the buttons have shifted slightly preventing them from being depressed?

So after putting the little chip in there is programmed already? Does it lock the car and everything remotely ?

The door controls are programmed within the circuitry that is transferred to the new shell. The transponder that communicates with the ignition is necessary to start the car and if removed from a previously working key, will enable your new key as well. I hope this helps

I've done this exercise over and over. The only drawback is I cannot find shells that would last long enough before they break apart again, unless you seal with glue the housing top & bottom, which if I do, makes future maintenance a headache again.
    Any suggestions?

The shell I got seemed to be of good quality, although since this video I have sold the car so I had it for less than a year. the shell was bought on Ebay from paylesscarkeys for about $14. Good luck!

Except due to planed obsolescence that fragile glass piece has a very limited shelf life...
Things are manufactured to break and pay to be “replaced” not “fixed”

I think my new key has been glued to prevent the transponder from being removed. I can't seem to break it free. 😞

Any of you run into the new key fob having clear plastic or hardened glue on the inside. It's preventing me from pushing the transponder housing out of the new key fob. I have a picture of any of you think you can help. I've pressed pretty hard and that piece won't pop out

I have that same problem right now. Did you solve this problem? I think it's because I bought the new fob from Volvo. They probably use glue to prevent what we are trying to do.
