What Parts Do And Do Not Need A Tune

- Do I need a Tune? Does this part require a tune? Hot question that I get asked a lot so hopefully this helps you guys out to know what parts require a tune and what do not. Keep in mind that any engine parts that change the amount of air or fuel that enter or exit the car will need a tune. With the exception of some that fall into a grey zone. This is mainly targeted at Turbo cars but still can apply to Naturally Aspirated (N/A) Versions as well. Hope this helps!

@@Smeedia Firstly, Good info.. ahh u da man. You young whipper snapper brainiacs crack me up..(-::
Secondly, and this is a good one. I did a tune while having CAI and catted dp on my 2016 atsv. On my 14th upload(13th was fantastic) the car seems to have spun a rod..Not good..stuck in traffic..(can u say new engine needed)!. The car only has 35k miles on it. Its a boarderline spectacular car in many ways.
Anyway, hopefully my cpo or ext warr can/will step (after I back track). Supposedy air was to rich or lean per the tuner file. I have a graph and video. It's actually all greek laguage to me though.
Q: Will the aftermarket cold air intake already on the car (air) bother/hurt a new stock lf4 engine? I have been told cai and aftermarket exhaust also will not effect the warranty) and allow the car to hold it's normal factory performance.
@@Smeedia Hey great video man very informative, however i had a question regarding Blow Off Valves.. I got a HKS BOV i'm putting on a 2018 Elantra Sport which has a MAP sensor and not a MAF, do i need a tune ? ;/ thanks
the community agrees
Many make the mistake of getting a tune and keep adding part's , with the cost of a pro-tune it's best to gather up all of your performance parts install and tune all at once ! In my experience any car will respond to a good pro-tune , $750 where I am !
100%! Thats typically what I do with mine 🔥
@@Smeedia I know I’m late to this but what about flex fuel kit? You talked about fuel pumps and preparing for a tune but what about the flex fuel kit and still running normal gas until I’m ready for the tune. Hope my question made sense
@@jamesmota when running E85, you need larger injectors because you need 30%-40% more E85 to generate the same amount of energy as gasoline. So right there you have your answer. With bigger injectors you need a tune. But putting the car on a dyno and having a base map sent to you are 2 different things. This is something you'll discuss with your tuner, and most will send you a base map that will scale your injectors correctly in order to get the car running. There's no power tuning done in the base map. It's just a 'make it work' map, so you can drive the car to the dyno where further, more in depth tuning can be done.
Honestly one of the biggest helper videos out there. As always man excellent video. I cant wait to get mine back up and going
Teying to cover all the bases for the questions I see out there 🔥
@@Smeedia well excellently covered and even better when you mentioned the TMIC and FMIC that made the most sense. I am so happy I didn't ask about my bpv
I just got my first WRX, and this is just the video I needed while I recoup my savings!😅

Hands down the best CZcams channel/videos for fast/crash courses on anything related to modifying/tuning a Subaru..
❤❤❤
@@Smeedia Just replaced the engine oil/filter. You would not believe what I found while inspecting my under the car. A freaking set of pressure pliers clamping the heater core hose leading to the heater core.. Talk about a hack job! 🤦🏻♂️
This helps me alot sense I just got a 2019 WRX, first time WRX owner, so far I've been having a blast and I want to start modifying it, just didn't know where to start and what I could and couldn't do. So with that, thank you

Greatly appreciate all your hard work vidoes. Btw Chris at Surgeline tuned my car last week number are awesome 496horses and 450torque. Followed your videos and passed the pre inspection with flying colors just need to upgrade the hose from ewg to ebcs. Thanks again.
Glsd the tune went well and sounds like some awesome power! Chris always does a killer job! 🔥🙏
With out any doubt, very down to earth and easy to talk to. Gives a lot of tips and how to proper care for the tune that he did. Overall experienced with Surgeline are phenomenal 🔥🔥🔥.
Gotta hit up Brian with that Motul xcess gen2 oouuuuuuuuu.
Appreciate the video. New to the subie family.
Glad it helped! 🔥😁
I love your videos bro and they are very helpful... so im kinda new to the sti world... i was wondering if you can recommend any good bpv brands for 2019 sti?
I would stick with Cobb if your looking for an aftermarket option, can't say I've ever seen one of theirs fail!
Thank you so much for all the informative videos, love your channel! What if you have an aftermarket down pipe with a high flow cat, stock cat-back and are tuned for this setup then get an aftermarket cat-back? Do you need a new/updated tune for this?
You can swap out to whatever cstback you like, the only component from what you mentioned above is just the downpipe 🙏😁
@@Smeedia sweet!! That’s what I figured but couldn’t find that specifically anywhere. Wasn’t sure if the high flow cat would make a difference.
Thanks a lot!!
So I went ahead with the 3” catback and was actually running lean afterwards. Not sure if any or all the other mods I have had an impact or not but either way ended up getting an updated map. Just thought someone might find this useful.
Thanks for the info. Great video, awesome editing too. Eres perro con este conocimiento.
TGV deletes, have you heard about only getting rid of the butterflies, letting the sensors do it’s work, but the shafts still turn with sensors?
Bought a stock 02 WRX. Swapped turbo ( Maxpeedigrods street " and a Turbo XS downpipe. Now pushing 22-23 psi on stock tune. No worries so far
thanks very useful info!
Anytime! Glad it helped 🥳
Man this guy is a Saint. I was stuck between a gti and a wrx for a while and went with the WRX in the end. The styling is just way better imo, and the AWD will be nice here In the Midwest. Probably should've test drove a gti as well but loved the rawness of the wrx
What generation did you get? Congrats on the car! 😁😁😁
@@Smeedia Brand new 2021 premium trim, crystal pearl white. Im looking forward to my friends giving me shit for not getting the gti lol. Original plan was type r but the mark ups are insane and it's a bit out of my budget.
It'll be plenty nice compared to my basic paint peeling 2008 Mazda 3.
This is so helpful! Thanks for always making such informative and digestible videos, keep it up man. I got a question though...I have plans to go e85 on my 2013 WRX, so I'm going to be installing injectors, flex fuel sensor, fuel pressure sensor, and fuel pump, but also which I'm installing that stuff, will be doing a downpipe, potentially a TMIC, and also a new clutch to hold the torque I should be at after this is all said and done and pro tuned. So here's my dilemma: I'm going to pull the engine to do the clutch so it seems like it would be wise to just do everything else all at the same time so its all ready to go with all the mods for the tune, but I know the clutch will have a break-in time so I want to make sure that's also accounted for before I get the tune as well. I've heard tuners will be able to give a "base map (rev limit reduction/low to no boost, correct?)" so I can still drive around for the time being and also get the milage on the new clutch. Is that safe and ok for the engine for the proper clutch break-in time/miles while I'm on the base map?
Just drive around on the base map a bit to break it in and you won't have any issues, I'm doing the same thing 🙏😁
@@Smeedia Awesome! how annoying is it??
Not bad at all, just normal driving
Good to hear! Totally worth it for end result
Keep it up, awesome video , but changing radatior do you need a tune ?
No tune needed for a rad 🙏😁🔥
I've watched this so many times
Great informative video!
My question is, what is it about Subarus that makes them so sensitive to bolt-ons? I see other people trash Subaru all the time for needing a tune for everything. What is different between us and other cars?
Thr ECUs and potential for failure can be higher when abused or not properly tuned. Unfortunately just the way that are 😖
Man what a great video. I had questions about alot of these parts. The Cobb Acess port is for monitoring things that need a tune right? Another dumb question. I'm not ever going to modify My Ocean Blue base model WRX. The Cobb access port looks cool. It's expensive. Again a great video man. Thanks a ton.
It's for both monitoring and tuning 😁
Glad to see u post on this shitty day man, some fucks kicked my trunk and my back doors in on my STI on my apartments parking lot last night, im devastated my baby is mangled up :(
Why would they do that?! 😢 Hopefully insurance takes care of you quick. Sorry to hear 😖
@@Smeedia Yeah went to the insurance checker guy and the process is ongoing, also filed a crime report.. Shits fucked man can't enjoy shit without people ruining it :P
Hey man I got a question I live in Florida and I’m pretty new to the STI life. I got a 2011 StinkEye Sedan recently and I’ve gained a lot of good good information from you so far. I watched your video on what to Monitor on the accessport and I just have a question about intake temps mine was at 140 degrees today just at idle is that bad? Florida gets pretty hot and humid here. I’m pretty stock all I have is exhaust and a pro tune. No intakes yet or anything.
Generally if IATs are 20+ above ambient I consider them high. I would not dig i to the car with high IATs. Just drive around normal and it should be fine 🙏
Do I need a tune for Drop in Air Filter? BTW great video as always!
You should be fine without a tune but always suggested 🙏😁
Loving the new profile picture!
Thank you 😁🔥
This helped a lot, I’m looking at buying a mazdaspeed3 and wanted to know what i could do wout a tune (catback)
Catback will really be the go to 👀
Great video!!!!!🙏🔥
Thank you 🙏😁🔥
I would say it’s also a good idea to call a tuner or email them and ask them specifically about a part if it needs a tune or not if you are unsure. But I’ve talked to three different tuners personally about headers if they need a tune or not. And they said no I don’t but if I want to see power gains then I would need a tune. So idk what to do
I personally would not swap a header without a base map or tune, your changing the piping ID and if going to ELH the exhaust flow as well
Hey the v3 iag aos tune or no tune? I don't know if it's atmosphere or not. Do you know? By the way anytime I need to know something about the car you got a video for it. Best subi channel by far lots of info
🙌🙌🙌
The street series does not need a tune
The competition series will need a tune
So to be clear as I hear it an uppipe doesn't need a tune? My 14 sti protune e85 here, definitely do not want to fork over another grip of coin for another dyno run/retune if i dont have to.
Keep up your amazing work yo!🤘
I guess I subscribed to your channel just after this video was made. I own a 2015 STI that I bought new in 2014. The only mod I have done to the car that you mentioned was to add a Mishimoto air intake less than a year into ownership. Never got a tune. The car runs fine. In fact, the only issue I ever had with it was a bad solenoid. Even then, the car ran well. I just couldn't go into sharp+ mode. I am fanatical about maintenance, as this car is my daily driver. Just completed a major service at 105,000 miles (timing belt, gaskets, seals, another solenoid, etc.). At that time, I added a Cobb lightened pulley and pitch stop mount. The car runs great. Turning my attention to coilovers and new 18' wheels now. Love the channel! Keep up the great work!
THANK YOU
great video ! im new to the subaru gang! i just got a 2021 sti limited! i just purchased the invidia r400 turbo back exhaust, as well as the accessport how wouldni need to tune the car? ik it sounds stupid but i just dont want to mess anything up and i also know it voids the warranty thank you for the great video !
When you plug in the AP it will walk you through the prompt on the screen and it should tell you step by step what to do, super easy I promise 😁
@@Smeedia sweet thank you so much !
thanks helped alot
🙏😁
Recently bought a 2020 wrx 20k miles from a really good dealership has garret top mount, tgv delete, grimmspeed controller, also has the vent stand for the access port. No CEL so it definitely was tuned at one point. What would be the first thing you recommend doing to keep the car good and figure out what tune it's on?
Take it to a tuner
My car is completely stock I just added a K&N drop in filter. Can I install the COBB access port without a tuning? Thanks I really appreciate your knowledge and advices.🤘🤘🤘🤘
hey man enjoyed the video a bunch , i was thinking about looking at an acura cl type s. the previous owner has put on a cold air intake, intake manifold spacer, and headers without a tune. Should i stay away from it?
You should be good, naturally aspirated cars tend to take mods a little bit easier
@@Smeedia thank you so much for your insight man🙏🙏🙏
Anytime! 🙌🙏
Always saving me
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hey sir, i looked up the ETS extreme exhaust.. i know they make amazing products , and i know for more power, people rather get their cold air intakes plus their front mount intercoolers... but ive heard their exhaust isnt that loud?? do you prefer ETS over COBB, or Tomei exhaust?? i know COBB is the most expensive, so ETS wins on that part, but what do you think??? --
ETS and Tomei are about the same level of lifestyle. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the Tomeis style but both are solid options!
Once I get the Cobb access port will it be better to get a tune from someone in the mainland or get someone from where I am (Hawaii)? Also, if I keep adding parts without tuning it like what you said the first 6 minutes will I have problems? Cuz I'm sure it'll be hard to buy a part and not install it right away... Great information on the video!!!!!
I'd suggest an etune, they work wonders for most mods. If there are any dyno shops in Hawaii that too is a good option 🔥
10/10 most satisfying OUUU! U know some solid knowledge about to be dropped
😉😉😉😉
I see you have some metal exhaust tip shrouds or what not. Where did you get those? I have awe cat back with 4" tips (sounds and performs fantastic btw) but I noticed they just barely touch the rear of the stock plastic and a tiny bit of melting is happening. Would these pieces help with that?
They should help, and thwyre the JDM exhaust guards. Snagged them off of rally sport 😁🔥
@@Smeedia thank you as always.
In the turbo muffler delete area will making the hole inside bigger help for performance?
Think i might know the answer to this but what if you are running a gfb hybrid bov and are tuned for full blowoff. Can i close it halfway without a tune? love your videos man
You can, if its tuned for full atmosphere then you may run a tad leaner than normal but with such minimal air glinf back in i don't see it making a huge difference
hey man thanks for the vid! Just have a question, if installed downpipe, up pipe, headers, intake and TGV deletes would it be safe to drive my wrx conservative to my tuner?
No, get a base tune 🙏
@@Smeedia thanks mate!
And by up-pipe, that also mean Frontpipe, right? I've got a 2019 Accord Sport MT, when tuning I saw the check-box for the downpipe (it's catted and didn't have any codes when I drove it home), but I didn't see anything specific for my cold-air intake - do you know what I should look for? using KTuner
Always have or putting out what I'm looking for😂
😉😉😉
I know this comment is super late but I'm hoping you'll see this somehow. I also live in Washington but have no clue where to find a pro tuner. Do you have any recommendations? Also I've been watching your channel for over a year now and I love the videos just as much as when I first started watching!
10/10 suggest PRE racing, English Racing or surgeline tuning. If your on the east side then GetaDom 😁🔥
@@Smeedia Thank you so much!!!
Hello I wanted to ask, my car is a 2021 GLE 450 M256 Engine stage 2 tune 361,3 AWHP + 538.8 AWNM and I wanted to install a weistec BOV Adapter, do I need to retune after installing the BOV Adapter???
Perrin claims that NO tune is necessary for their front mount intercooler I was curious what you thought about this. I’m going to post what they sent me when I asked them.
“While you can gain MORE from a tune with a FMIC, you do not NEED a tune with a FMIC. The computer will naturally adjust to the cooler charge temps and make more HP / TRQ accordingly. Additionally, it will keep charge temps lower for a longer perior od time vs the TMIC that will reach heat soak quite quickly.
We do offer parts that MUST be tuned after install and will inform clients of those in the same manner that we inform accurately and honestly when you do not 😊 You will not damage the engine or the car with the installation of the FMIC. Period.”
Personally I wouldent use one without the proper tune
@@Smeedia bet your a goat for responding so quick! I just don’t want to wait so I’m trying to justify it 😭
What kind of tune would you recommend for these parts in the video?
Subaru sponsor this man 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
🙌🙌🙌🙌
If I'm adding the Cobb Big SF intake, the Accessport and use their +BigSF OTS map - does that count as a tune and will be enough?
Yes that will work 🙏🔥
Question. Does the no tune required for the upipe apply for the 02 wrx or is that only for the newer models?
All models, removing the car in the uppipe shouldn't cause any issues
Best thumbnail ever
Couldn't help it 😅🔥
to emphasis on 4:15 , I was running a stage 1 cobb OTS tune on my stock 2011 wrx and decided it would be a good idea to toss on a turbo smart BOV without any pro tune or e tune. Engine ran super rich and then blow the motor on me so no, do not put a BOV on your car without a tune for it 😅
Question about BPV's not BOV's. does the replacement of the stock or OEM BPV with an aftermarket gem create any power difference, or is it done because the aftermarket units are stronger and tunable?
No difference, the only real reason is when you exceed the boost limitations of thr stock BOV is when it's really needed to put an after market unit on
I have my car flashed for the stage 1+ cobb big sf 91 tune, so I have the air intake but also a cobb BPV, so I’m relieved to know I don’t need a tune for the BPV, but what about a cobb charge pipe? Can I run that on without a custom tune?
No tune needed for the charge pipe 💪
Just got a 2020 Subaru gotta throw that Cobb air//oil separator in, but just to be clear that one don’t need a tune right?
No tune needed 🤙
Great video...subscribed...I got a question about TGV Deletes, besides the CEL Codes, is a tune required. Asking cause I got rid of mine and will not be doing a tune for another month until a back order downpipe arrives. Thank you
An adjust would be suggest because your increasing airflow, but you should be fine for a short period of time 🙏😁
@@Smeedia thanks dude..
Btw I have been watching your vids all night...great content
Thank you! 🙏😁 appreciate the kind words and support 🔥😁
@@Smeedia Can you do a video of ypur thought on Tomei UEL Headers made for the FA20 WRX to discuss: Is it worth it for the Subie Rumble? Advantages vs Disadvantages..thank you again
Ive talked about it in a few live streams but I can touch on it again in the next one 🔥🙏
Would it better to save up and compile all the parts to install them all at once and get one tune to save money or install little by little and get a tune after each?
Get a stockpile of parts, install and then tune 🙏🔥
What if you're swapping from one aftermarket intake to another aftermarket intake and the car has an e-tuned already? Would ya need to retune for the new intake? I'm assuming yes since the airflow would still probably be different? Just got the car a few months ago and I don't like the look of the intake the previous owner had installed. Gotta get the aesthetics right!
Depends on the intakes, but ideally yes. Should just be a simple map adjustment
Could you do a video on UEL and EL Headers and your opinion potentially 👉🥺👈
Yes I can 🙏😁
