Thanks Robert - this helped me solve the same issue - I was able to put those eye hooks through both pieces of plastic (drilling it first) even thought the original clip was broken. I didn’t use the wire but still got it fixed.

ive also noticed the pin that holds the metal handle to the plastic the pin slides up and out of the bottom post hole so the handle goes side ways and wont let the door open either.... see 2 s60 like this mine and 1 in the bone yard...

What do you do when the driver door doesn't open from the outside but it does from the inside

I just changed that thing I have 2005 s60 with so called "non-resusable door panel clips, i removed them by nylon thread and didn't damage any, and those rings i removed by using small crochet needle, didn't brake any rings. If You use brain You can fix things with no damage.

so where do you get the clips from when they break? the gold ones that you need to pop up but wont unscrew ?

Thanks for asking, the genuine ones on the car 'appear' to be 7mm inner dia and 13mm outer dia. These are called push-on locking washers. There is this listing on Ebay but can't find the correct size. Perhaps try a local hardware store (or the main dealer)
