  • Paul Vario was a mafioso, a capo, and later the consigliere of the Lucchese crime family. He also has the distinction of being Henry Hill’s teacher/father figure on the mobster way of life. A fictional character played by actor Paul Sorvino based on Vario was featured in the film Goodfellas..

I find it difficult to believe that Henry claims to have not killed anyone as I don't think Paul Vario, Tommy De Simone and Jimmy Burke would have had Henry so closely associated with them and witnessing their various murders without Henry being required to do a killing in their presence.

Goodfellas holds a special place in my heart because of the presence and relationship between rob de Niro and Ray. They portrayed as much realism as they could to create a masterpiece. Typically America wanted to show these guys actually better than they was. Karen needed money, so a low profile affair took place, Henry couldn’t argue especially cheating himself, he also needed the financial backing and when he didn’t get enough from his own crew he got hooked on making profit from drugs. In the end relying on other people got him in trouble he made a mistake and had no choice but to rat. If you listen closely it took 2 years for the main boss to be sentenced more than enough time to kill Henry. Henry had brought too much attention on himself and the crew he knew the only way was to rat having lost the trust and respect of Jimmy Burke. I really wish we knew a little more, had more images and details but Henry has brought us most of this info which we wouldn’t have had if he hadn’t have been a snitch. They’d have killed him and not battered an eye that’s how it was. Yes Karen was a slag but she did what she had to do and was also angry with Henry. Incredible insight still. Goodfellas was based on facts but much of which was improvised. Robert De Niro and Ray played they’re part so well it was brilliant.

It just blows my mind that this guy may have been one of the top criminals in the world and the FBI didn't even have his name because he was so quiet. There are subtle hints in Goodfellas actually, for example: when Paul and Jimmy go to see Henry (now staying with his lover) in order to convince him to go back to Karen, Paul says that he will have a word with Karen himself to pacify things as he "knows how to talk to her".
One wonders how and when the two got that close? 😂

P.S. What got me into the back seat of a police car in '72 was because of a B&E and arson. And that's not bullshit. Not bad for an eleven year old. Ha ha! But the law forced me to meet face to face with the owner. He was a sweet, gentle old man who forgave me and asked me to help clean up the mess. (I lit up his garage.) What a lesson I learned. He is always in my mind. As for the mob, I did know some of them when I later moved to the main land in the 80's. My older brother became friends with one of them. I met the guy.. I didn't like him at all. A JACK OFF!!
