Gary Frank is a fantastic artist. I was deliberately blown away when I read shazam vol1. His art is just so unique and admirable that I wish he did more stuff.
The Shazam-verse deserves more recognition. It has two of the greatest DC characters ever; Black Adam and Captain Marvel.
SHAZAM!
I'm really liking this new version of Shazam. He seems a lot more contemporary and accessible. What Geoff Johns did was add layers and depth to the Shazam mythos and tied him in deeper within the DCU. I know, Billy can be bratty but we get to see him learn to be a hero. The hood may be a little much but this is the best version of the character since World's Finest (in the 80's with E.Nelson Bridewell and Don Newton). The only other version I really enjoyed was Alex Ross' Kingdom Come!
For all you who grew up in the 80's (like me), keep in mind that the heroes we grew up with during that era were not the original versions of the characters. Crisis on Infinite Earth's effectively changed many of DC's top icons for that era. There has been several changes since then and New 52 is only the latest. There will be more as time goes on and era's come and go. Some characters will have minor changes, some will be major. We older fans always have the option to walk away and keep...
If I'm not mistaken DC sued Fawcett Comics (the original creators/publishers of Capt. Marvel) essentially out of business because C.M was so successful at the time and they felt that he was an infringement on Superman. I wonder if they would have sued if the character hadn't been successful. I think I read an article a few years back that suggested that Marvel created and copyrighted their own C.M. to stick it to DC.
I started to get into comics...to get into DC Comics actually. Best thing I've done in a while.
Whoever is in charge of authorizing these new titles, give Shazam his own title. He has the potential to outshine everything currently in comics, it is known.
never really looked into Shazam before but hearing who he is I'm going to start reading his comic more. Side note he's like a cross between superman and Harry Potter

Solomon, Herakles (Hercules), Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, & Mercury (Hermes). I love Captain Marvel. I never enjoyed him sharing his powers though, the family makes it too... idk kiddish/simple/light to me personally.
Yeah, the Shazam run in Justice League was 85% of why I was buying it!

This character is so different from any other Captain Marvel that Fawcet or DC has put out, I am willing to coll him "Shazam."

We older fans always have the option to walk away and keep our memories of the versions we grew up with. We can watch our children enjoy their own version of the same characters. Or we can put curses on the DC company and the DCU (like a good friend of mine did) and live angry for the rest of our lives. For me, the only version of Shazam I hated was with the 80's Justice League where he was characterized as a 'row your boat' singing, retarded, single cell amoeba!

This guy has no idea what he is talking about. I understand that in the New 52 Continuity he is called SHAZAM just like the wizard SHAZAM, and his powers are a little different, but Billy Batson remained the same basic kid. Billy Batson was chosen to be Captain Marvel because he showed that he had a true heart and could be more than selfless. In The New 52 he is still the same Billy Batson, albeit he is a little bit carefree and not willing to admit his selflessness despite his actions.
I like shazam better because the citizens would be like' "who's dat I heard him say Shazam you think dat his name? Ya man"

Yeah, I can understand why they did it (the legal issues over the name Captain Marvel AND how there are many people who already thought his name was Shazam) but I still wish they hadn't but I do understand it. :)

Most of the other versions of Shazam have been....forgetful. I take that back! I LOVED Roy & Dan Thomas' Shazam: A New Beginning. Black Adam was actually darker in his skin tone.....as if he came from Egypt (he does)! I wish DC would have done more with that version as well.
People have been calling him SHAZAM for YEARS. It's the word on the front of every comic with the character in it and the name of the TV series.
I'm totally familiar with the character, thank you very much, but I've still called him SHAZAM all my life because no-one else knew what I was talking about when I said Captain Marvel.
All things considered, we should be amazed that it's taken DC so long to drop the name Captain Marvel.
PLEASE have a Shazam solo series! Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Doug Mahnke would be perfect! I would want Gary Frank but I just dont think he could keep up with a monthly series for long given how detailed his artwork is and the fact that hes doing Batman Earth One.

What the hell are you talking about Geoffy? Billy Batson is one of the nicest people ever! Oh well, I only read the last 2 when Captain Marvel started being himself again. Also kudos to you Geoff for bring back Mr. Mind. Just don't screw him up! Remember these characters aren't meant to be taken as seriously as the other DC heroes.

In this New 52 version how does he transform from Billy Batson to Shazam? Since Shazam is now his official name. How can he tell some strange his own name without changing back to Billy Batson?

No. His name has been officially changed to Shazam. You can call him what you like but his name is not Captain Marvel
I called him Shazam while he was Captain Marvel so it don't matter to me.
Not anymore sadly, since you know..MARVEL comics kinda sued for that decades ago and made their own Captain Marvel character. They can still use the term, and do in some movies and cartoons, but in the comics it's kinda set now.

Oh and if it counts... I do not like the hood either. I mean I get it, but the cape draping over on shoulder was an amazing concept. It shows his novice side. He is not all hero quite yet and has some growing to do.

Wrong. The only limitation is the use of the name "Captain Marvel" as the title of a comic; DC has used the characters true name since they bought the rights to in early 70s. The name of the character has always been Captain Marvel. I'm sorry if you are so unfamiliar with the character that you don't know his real name, but that doesn't change the fact his name is Captain Marvel. Shazam is the name of the wizard that granted him is powers, and the word he uses to evoke them, NOT his name.

I always thought Captain Marvel/Shazam was the best hero because he possesses one thing that puts him above every other hero, Innocence. The belief that good can spring from even the most evilest of villains. It's foolish but righteous and awesome. This new back story is ok but I prefer his old name and the wizard being Shazam.

Captain Marvel is the name trademarked by Marvel (currently being used on some blonde woman) so DC couldn't use it anyway.

bertlee20 Do you know in the 40s DC filed a lawsuit against the makers of shazam because they thought that shazam had similarities with superman and they won the lawsuit and the makers of shazam were forced to cancel his comic books and shazam haven't defeated superman before and now just saying.

Well...in certain cartoons and in certain worlds in the Multiverse there is still a Captain Marvel. And this character is so different from those Captain Marvels that I will cal this one Shazam and the others Captain Marvel.
DC, Captain Marvel is one of my favorite characters in DC universe along with Superman and Batman and ManHunter. Changing his name is annoying. but saying "he is not someone trying to do the right thing" aggravates me. I liked Justice league war but seriously they made Captain Marvel look like a thief, who stole a jersey and sneaked and Lied his way into the football stadium. not a big fan of the changes DC is making.
Shazam is Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel is Shazam. They aren't aloud to call him Captain Marvel though because Marvel is trademarked

Actually, they DIDN"T have to change the name. They could not call the BOOK Captain Marvel due to copyright, but they could still call the character Captain Marvel as they had been for decades. DECADES!!!
It's not the name itself that bothers me, it's that he can't say his own name without going super. If he wanted to, he should be able to say stuff like "[Insert name here] to the rescue!" or whatnot.

Marvel is #1 cause they got it right when it came to making movies from "Iron Man" onward. That has lead to strong book sales. However, other than a few books, Marvel's comics are just re-hashes of X-Men and Avengers. Boooooring!!! Plus haven't you heard of Marvel Now? They're doing reboots without calling them reboots. And regardless of how you feel about DC, Geoff's Shazam is the best thing to ever happen to the character.

Before the rebooted SHAZAM, Billy Batson was a Gary Stu with all the personality of a potato. Now he has a CHARACTER.
The Captain Marvel for whom you are so nostalgic was, take away the magic and transforming-from-child gimmick, just a clone.

Personally, I hate how all these classic heroes are being reworked for a new generation. I like the name Captain Marvel, even if DC don't have the rights to use it for publicity purposes. Captain Marvel / Shazam with a hood? I guess all those kids who wear hooded sweatshirts are happy with this. It just seems like older comic book fans are getting pushed aside as irrelevant.

2. Is a hood on a hero who almost had a hood in the first place going to ruin the WHOLE character for you? Seriously.
3. I've never heard of DC pushing out older readers as to draw in a new crowd. If anything the media is aging with it's audience, while still maintaining a much loved charm. Darker but more humorous as well.
The Shazam rework is exactly that, a rework. They are not changing who the character truly is, nor what he stands for. I think Shazam is amazing and would love to see some animated appearances of his character. Boy in a superhero's body, with little control over his true power, but still manages to be a hero in the end? Sign me up.

I'm pretty much considering this like how Jay Garrick and Bary Allen can both be the Flash, but in different universes (that's ho it was before the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" in 1986, anyway). So in one universe, Billy Batson is Captain Marvel, in another he is Shazam.
