As Earth’s mightiest mortal and champion of justice, this hero was first introduced as Billy Batson, an orphaned paperboy working the night shift by the subway station. The Shazam movie from 2019 blew my mind away with great casting and great plot.
I imagine the talk went:

Captain Marvel is one of my favorite superheros yet he hasn't been done justice yet... Still hoping for a great series with him

He is one of my favorite heros as well. I would really love to see him in modern media. The character would work as well in a live action movie, as he would a cartoon series. A lot of people think he is too old school or hokey, I personally love his message of hope. Although he is orphaned and has to live homeless as a mere child, he sees the best in things, not becoming corrupt. It's like his internal hero becomes his external self. He wasn't just lucky. He has a fucking heart of gold man.

I understand why Captain Marvel had to be renamed I guess, but it's stupid to call himself Shazam, every time he introduces himself he'll turn back to Billy Batson, and then his cover will be blown.
they retconned that too. he now has control over whether or not lightning appears when he says "shazam".
How would he have control over when he "says" Shazam? He's a 12 year old kid, as far is he know an old man just told him to be a superhero and "says" Shazam in reference to remembering the old man's name. SO he would have never actually learn to turned into Captain Marvel because he wouldn't know that saying Shazam would change him...
recently the following has become the case:
to transform he has to want to transform and say "shazam".
however, if he says "shazam" casually without actually wanting to transform he simply won't.
It's sort of as if the transformation spell had an AI :D
Yeah. but Billy Batson wouldn't have known that he could become a superhero if he didn't accidentally say the wizard's name Shazam, so he never would have turned into Captain Marvel. I understand that DC had to change his name but they could have kept "Captain", that's not owned by Marvel!

BS! DC's Captain Marvel was made in 1939, Marvel's Captain Marvel was made in 1967. Why does DC have to RE-Name him? Can someone explain.
You see, in 1953 Superman's creators sued Fawcett for likeness to Superman. He was shelved, unshelved, and shelved again before DC picked him and the Marvel family up again in the 1960's and 70's. THEY NEVER COINED HIS NAME. When The Captain started to come back, Marvel made/coined THEIR OWN Captain Marvel.
This forced DC to re-brand Captain Marvel as Shazam.
Uh dude, it's DC'S fault, and Captain Marvel wasn't created by DC. Fawcett Comics created Captain Marvel and it outsold Superman during the 40s and DC got mega butthurt so they sued them and they weren't allowed to make Captain Marvel comics. Then MARVEL took the name Captain Marvel because Fawcett couldn't use it because of DC'S dickery. DC eventually bought Captain Marvel from Fawcett in the 70s, but the DC Captain Marvel comics have been.nowhere near as good as the original ones by Fawcett, and DC has handled the property really poorly.
As the others have stated, the authors of Fawcett comics were sued for creating a character like Superman. The comic series was shelved for 20 years. It turns out a lot of kids really liked Captain Marvel so some genius decided to bring him back up. Little did they know, Timely Comics turned Atlas comics turned Marvel Comics had already made ownership of the term "Captain Marvel". So they still kept the characters name but htey couldn't brand the comics. So they instead went with SHAZAM!
50 years after, DC rebranded the entire history of their characters and now Billy Batson is known as Shazam.
DC... lets face it, they're a prettys hit bird company when it came to legal property and in writing. They currently have 6 Batman related comic series. Animal man is defunct and he was the most popular comic series they had in years and it was fresh.

Personally, I am a big fan of "SHAZAM!" I enjoyed the comic books and the early 1970's TV series. I for one would LOVE to see a reboot of the "SHAZAM" franchise in the form of a new TV series based on both the comic book and the original TV series.

Bruce Timm summed it up pretty well by describing Captain Marvel as a less mature, experienced and more naive version of superman himself. If they fought it would be like supes going back in time ten years and fighting himself, the older and more experienced version tends to win. The one time they fought as true equals was during a mini series called Kingdom Come. It is fairly well implied they would have killed each other if they didn't stop fighting.

Fawcett Comics should have won the Captain Marvel lawsuit. They had the Captain Marvel character and the Captain Marvel name first. That was really stupid of DC Comics for stealing the rights to the Captain Marvel character and changing Captain Marvel's name to Shazam. And that was really stupid of Marvel Comics for stealing the rights to the Captain Marvel name. DC and Marvel need to be sued. And by the way, Shazam is the name of the Wizard, not Billy Batson's alter ego. And the Shazam family is called the Marvel family.

He is basically immortal in his Captain Marvel form and he use magic to fight, which is a known weakness of Superman and not to mention, that unlike Superman he can actually fight like a champion (hercules, achilles...)! I could be wrong on this one, but I remember, that there was some art or a comic in which Captain Marvel defeated Superman...I think I am going to google it :)

Shawn P. Would have been much better if it was the Marvel Comics that bought the rights for him... They probably would treat the char a lot better, as well as it would be pretty funny to see DC's reaction for the char's revival then.

All right. If I was reading a story where a mysterious cloaked figure asked a young boy to follow him into a dark subway at night to see his magical train, I would expect it to end with a crime scene investigation.
i am very happy that the rock was cast as black adam but i am even most excited to see shazam on the big screen and hopefully it will be connected with BvS universe, just imagine the fight between superman and shazam. my pick for shazam is kellan lutz because is huge and i think he can give a great performance but he wasnt given anything yet that would showcase his talent

in public he is called Captain Marvel. He can't say Shazam at all since it summons the lightning (which he can still dodge). The only name change was to the title of the comic due to legal reasons with CM's original creators- however the character himself was ok as CM. Prior to the new continuity he actually became Shazam the wizard and helped train a new(ish) Captain Marvel.
Shazam was the elder that created Captain Marvel . If Captain Marvel had used Shazam as his name and was asked his name he would constantly revert back to Billy Batson.. See the Adventures Of Captain Marvel serial made in 1941, the first superhero movie ever made..

Because of the red suit... like Superman's nickname of 'Big Blue' because of the mostly blue suit. In the original comics, Dr. Sivana used 'Big Red Cheese' as an insult... Billy looks normal, but Capt. Marvel's face does look a little 'cheesy'!
Nicely done video. I liked the use of the old comics. One nit-pick: The bit about Black Adam killing Billy's parents was part of Jerry Ordway's 1994 re-boot of the character called "Power of Shazam!" In the original story that you show here, Teth Adam had been given the powers by Shazam in ancient Egypt, but he turned evil and was banished to the "farthest star." It took him 5000 years to fy back to Earth, and he was defeated by the Marvel Family the same day. The story was re-done in the "Shazam" cartoon show in the very early 1980's.

You do realize Shazam is stronger than Superman right? Shazam is a magic-based being, meaning is power is basically unlimited no matter what. If he had more fighting experience, he'd kick Superman's ass easily since Superman is vulnerable to magic.
