  • With minimal video edits, you get to see from start to finish how I teach a form drawing lesson. This is a real time lesson, so it's naturally long and there a many moments of quiet as is the natural tendency with lessons like this. This lesson was with my 6-year-old who hasn't started any formal education yet.
    A note on these lessons: Filming while doing a lesson is an unusually thing for us, and trying to orient all our main lesson books for the camera is unnatural. It's harder to write this way, and it's definitely not remotely ideal for my 6-year-old daughter who needs to do these lesson not just for the artistry, but for the hand mechanics of learning drawing and pre-writing skills. Also, I show the book and it is present for your benefit, but I would prefer to have the book away and for us to create the forms after I have familiarized myself with the forms.
    Though we did the suggested pre-lesson activities, it was hard to film all of those and explain how they complement the lesson and how to actually do those activities.
    One thing we haven't yet done, but intend to do with the lessons is tell a story that represents the forms.
    This is officially lesson 1 for this main lesson block. To see the other lessons, click here:
    • CREATIVE FORM DRAWING ...
    Lesson one was the introduction of the straight and curved line. Lesson two is patterns with straight lines. In lesson 2, we worked with long and short lines, and later we did patterns with increasing and decreasing lengths and lines going in horizontal and vertical orientations. We also introduced varying colors.
    We use Stockmar stick and block crayons on a 9x12 inch main lesson book with blank pages.

    • HOW I TEACH FORM DRAWI...
    Form drawing is calming, meditative and enjoyable. It's deceptively easy. Form drawing requires concentration and practice, but the process works to help children (and adults) focus the mind on the task, perfect it through repeated tries, all while enjoying the artistic aspect of the lesson.

    This is great! I wouldn't say "excellent" though. By doing this, you may be giving her a false idea behind the idea. Excellence should not be the goal here. Also, it may pass on that excellence is the goal. The goal is simply embracing the form as an feeling. Art will also be the same you see. Excellence is not the aim in art but rather the feeling associated with it. I hope you don't mind me giving feedback on it! Also, allowing more freedom would help too with encouragement and building confidence. I started this with my son this year and he is now drawing complex drawings of boats, aircrafts, etc. But he led himself into this see.

      I wanted to add that I wanted him to stick to the forms but he ended up applying the forms in his own drawings. In this case, I wouldn't go back and try to reinforce the forces.

      I always appreciate your comments. You share your wisdom & experience without judgement. Words have meaning. This caused me to reflect on my word choice. I'd like to address it more in a video. I've already done lesson 2, 3, and 4 and today we work on lesson 5, so I'll be mindful of my word choice.

      I think the basis is encouragement. But in that, we are perhaps maybe better to ask, "how did you think you did?" This offers a time of inner reflection and meaning. And we learn to gain the approval of ourselves from within instead of on the outer. Not answer is wrong or right. Only it helps to find ourselves in this process of creating! I love your videos and your inspiration always. I'm glad you received the information well. Blessings!

    I love it... It is so pretty simple, but the way your child adapt or absorbed the lesson was so awesome. I like it that you speak so nicely and kind to your kid. And the part that she has so many ideas to put in one lesson. And also the part that she was incharged and take the lead. This is so fantastic. Can't wait for lesson 2.

    Salamalaykum Hana.
    I lov these real time lessons. More than the lesson itself, I enjoy your interaction with the kids and how you work "together" with the kids. Keep up the good work 😊

    I love this video and the commands. It’s brave off you too show the lesson and the reactions. It’s like a class. Learning from each other. And your daughter is a great person. Naturally in the meaning of, if there is no audience. I Learn a lot

      Yes, and thankfully the kids did great. Plus it wasn't live, so if we did need to take breaks or have parenting mishaps, they could be edited out, phew!

    I love this, Hana! I must get this book for my girls. I also really love the idea of using the lesson block books. I am so eclectic over here that I do a little bit of this and that...but more often than not, we do things in theme units. I love the idea of putting our best work together in a book for our themes. Thanks so much for your great ideas and videos. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    I love the list that they gave of what the child is exposed to by doing this particular lesson. That in of itself was very valuable to me because it gives it true educational purpose. I am thinking I shall try to do a similar lesson with my 6 year old too. Loved your video.

    Drawing with noses is a fav here too 😊 We love drawing forms in dirt or sand, on each other's backs, in the air, big and small. Another fav is drawing them in finger paint. We really love form drawing lol. I'm not personally a fan of using stories for forms regularly because I feel it puts too many stories in our week

    • @kikiwylde
      @kikiwylde Před 6 lety +1

      Oh one other thing we do is practice the form on the board or on loose paper and the put our final work in our MLB. Because those books are expensive here lol

    Thank you for sharing this! Now do you do a block of form drawing in 1st grade? I’m trying to figure out how to incorporate form drawing into 1st grade but then I thought 1st grade only had language arts and math. Where does form drawing fit into your rotation?

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  Před 6 lety

      Hello Krystina, form drawing can be its own block, or you can incorporate it with math and language arts. Since I am not starting first grade officially with my 6-year-old, I decided to do form drawing now. It can run for 3-6 weeks. Or you can do three weeks at the start of the year and another three week block mid-year.

  • @searose6192
    @searose6192 Před 6 lety

    I know this is a funny thing to think, but I couldn't help but cringe a little at those big empty pages with single lines on them! LOL my super-frugal brain was shorting out 😂 do you use those papers for other drawings later on or decorate them with borders etc to make them more 'keepsake-y' books of progress over time? I am planning out a form drawing unit for my 7 and 5 yr old this fall and thought I would have them practice their forms on the chalkboard for a while and then put their best effort into making an entry in their MLB showcasing the line froms that week with a bordered page, color etc. and possibly even an illustration if the form has a natural one (castle, jumping fish etc.).

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  Před 6 lety

      Awe you're not alone! What I would do after the lessons are done (like the whole unit), would be to come back in and do nesting circles in various colors. Same with the line. It will give them more practice.

    • @searose6192
      @searose6192 Před 6 lety

      Pepper and Pine I love that idea 👍🏻 nesting lines and forms are always good practice and visually pretty. Thanks for the reply, I always love watching your videos they are really informative and inspirational.

    Hello, I wonder how this book compares to form drawing blocks in Waldorf homeschool curriculums? If i purchase Waldorf Essentials or Live Education etc, is it still worth buying this book, or will form drawing be covered in the curriculum?

    • @PepperandPine
      @PepperandPine  Před měsícem

      I love these form drawing books and they contain far far more than what's in the curriculum. However, the curriculum provides enough for the lessons suggested, so the form drawing book would either be extra, additional inspiration or a replacement if you didn't have a curriculum that provided form drawing.
