Registrace 7. 09. 2015
Hi everybody! My name is Hana! We have been homeschooling since 2003, and while our oldest has graduated from homeschool and attends university, we still have three more on this journey. We use a Waldorf inspired curriculum but frequently find our own path. We hope to share as many of our homeschool projects as possible. I'm helped along by my willing children without whom this channel would be impossible. Join us on this adventure, and hopefully you find inspiration along the way!
Why the name Pepper and Pine? The name came about from wanting a name that included everything I wanted to share on this channel and my website. I couldn't quite decide if my focus would be homeschooling, crafting or cooking, so I chose a 'generic' name that includes a nod to each. Pepper is for cooking and Pine is for paper which is used in school and crafting. I also wanted a popping name that was fun to say and most importantly was available for purchase as a domain. Hence, Pepper and Pine!

The Formation of Coal and the Carboniferous Period
The formation of coal occurred during a 60 million window during a period known as the Carboniferous period. During the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian periods of the Paleozoic Era, 299 to 359 million years ago, the planet was was warm, moist and had oxygen levels of 35%. Compared to the 21% of today, the Paleozoic Era boast oversized arthropods with dragonflies the size of birds and other insects measuring 10 feet long and weighing as much as 100 pounds. It must of been an extraordinary time, but totally inhospitable for humans and mammals. During the carboniferous period, the land was dominated by club moses, horsetails and ferns. These plants grew to tremendous sizes, towering as big as trees today. The land was swampy and oceans continually covered continents in shallow seas, over regressing from time to time. The continents at the time did not resemble the continents of today. Huddled together near the equator and towards the south pole, these continents experienced warm weather nearly year round. Nearly 300 million years ago, a catastrophic event took place. A massive volcano erupted on the continent that would later hold the country of Russia. This volcanic eruption lasted thousands of years and left behind rocky basalt evidence in Siberia known as the Siberian Traps. This event abruptly stopped the production of coal. The volcanic ash and toxic gasses were spewed into the air for so many years that the carbon dioxide covered the entire planet. The waters were warmed to the temperature of a warm bath and the circulation of water nearly halted. The plant life that had dominated the land and filled the shallow seas with plant matter, ceased to grow and eventually the plant matter became compact over layers of sediment for millions of years. Combined with the pressure from the weight of the sediment and heat from below, the plant matter that did not fully decompose became hardened into lignite. Then after more time, pressure and heat, it hardened further to coal.

Types of Fault Lines | Geology
zhlédnutí 295Před měsícem
Fault lines are lines of weakness in a plate and that instability results in plates shifting which can create brilliant mountain ranges. Fault lines can cause earthquakes which cause destruction to land and structures. For this lesson in our Mineralogy main lesson block, I prepared a lesson that wasn't specifically in the curriculum, though the study of mountain formation was previously address...
Grand Canyon Geology
zhlédnutí 184Před měsícem
This lesson on sedimentary rocks explores the Grand Canyon in Arizona. This geological formation is rich in beauty and geological history giving us an insight on how this land looked hundreds of millions of years ago. For this lesson I used the book Grand Canyon Geology by L. Greer Price, the Waldorf curriculum for grade 6 by Live Education and a documentary that can be found on CZcams. I resea...
Water Cycle | Earth Science

While this lesson was not in the curriculum, I chose to add it here because of its relevance with the previous lesson on the limestone cycle. Originally I intended for this lesson to be part of the limestone cycle, but it ended up being its own lesson, though I didn't have any additional written content for it. This illustration was copied from artwork I found online from the USGS website. I fo...
Limestone Cycle | Mineralogy

The limestone cycle starts in the ocean hundreds of millions of years ago when tiny creatures with calcium rich shells or bodies died and littered the ocean floor with increasing sediment. From the immense weight of the water above, the pressure compacted these layers and cemented them over time. Then through geological activities like magma pressing up against the ocean floor, tectonic activit...
Banded Iron Formations from Sedimentary Rock | Waldorf Mineralogy

In this Mineralogy lesson, we depart from the main lesson book by Live Education to focus on two lessons where we dive into how iron ore deposits formed in precambrian oceans. We previously did a lesson showing how iron ore is found in granite outcrops, but I wanted to add this lesson because as I researched Iron ore deposits and veins, I found that they are found frequently in sedimentary rock...

Handwork in Waldorf schools takes as much care in choosing the work that will be done as choosing the lessons. In some cases the lessons and the handwork coordinate beautifully. Cross Stitch and embroidery are the main projects for this grade. Felting a ball is the first step to an embroidered ball. This project may take weeks to months to complete. Cross stitch is a beautiful skill to develop ...
What Happens When You Add Vinegar to Natural Chalk

What happens when you add an acid like vinegar to natural chalk? We tried this demonstration back in 2016 with chalkboard chalk and were disappointed because chalkboard chalk is not made from naturally occuring chalk, and this project, based on the book Mountains and Volcanoes by Barbara Taylor, calls for natural chalk. After some searching, I found edible chalk which is all natural and bought ...

Reupholstering Folding Chair with Retainer Clips

If these had been screws for the backing and seat, it would have been far easier to reupholster, but alas, these seats had plastic clips that were nearly impossible to remove without damaging them. you are great mom and teacher 😍😍😍 I wanna learn more💖💖 thank u 💝💝💝
Would you be able to do a series like this for grade 2? This is my first year doing Waldorf and I’m trying to figure everything out
Yes! I would love to. So far I have a few videos but nothing extensive. It’s in my list.
@@PepperandPine oh awesome! Thank you so much! I appreciate all your videos! 🤍
Would you be able to do a video like this for grade 2?
Yes!
@@PepperandPine thank you so much! You’re videos have been so much help!
Wow! This is amazing! I love that your projects are beautiful and useful. And can be used again for repeat unit studies or even decorations. Where do you store everything after you move on from the unit?
Gorgeous! Do you do your crafting at that table?
Keep the post coming please 🌼
Wow, well done. Do you write curriculum?
Hi! Are you with Heartland Charter? You mentioned charter funding in a comment. We are with Heartland in SLO County and I very much enjoy the hauls with our funding🙌🏻
I love hearing your tangents it’s so helpful and relatable. Thank you for sharing with such depth and transparency.
In my opinion, we need a whole lot more hour-long (or nearly) videos about pencils.
😅🤣
Oh my... this is breathtakingly beautiful! ♡ Thankyou for sharing!
You are so welcome!
Thanks! I'm glad I found this because all the other videos had he easy breezy screws and I didn't even know what these were called to search them. I think that it will probably be worth it, because 1) as you mention, it's more environmentally friendly to re-use and 2) I think picking out the fabric to use will be part of the fun!
That was my hope! When I began reupholstering these, it took me a while to figure out how to do it and all the videos I saw showed the easy peasy screw chairs. I hope your project was a success!
“Math By Hand” is something I think I will include when we get to Math :-)
I've been considering using Live Education but wonder, do you feel it would be a good fit if a child is behind in reading, writing and math? I am referring to a mild to moderate learning disorder not an intellectual disability.
That’s a great question and while I can’t answer fully, I will say that all my kids read far later than what’s expected in schools today and would have been “behind”. However, when we look at development and appropriate teaching content and expectations, I don’t believe my children were ever “behind”. I would advise you have a consultation with the live education team before buying to make sure it’s a good fit. I believe they consult with anyone choosing to buy their curriculum.
Excellent! Well done
Hi Hannah! (Apologies if spelling is wrong) do you utilize both curriculums? Could they potentially mesh well?
Hello! Good question. I haven't tried meshing two curricula that are similar, but I have tried to mesh curricula/philosophies that are not similar and it didn't work well for me. I tried with Charlotte Mason and Waldorf for our lessons and it was disastrous for me. However, I do think where philosophies overlap or can mesh without compromise, it's great to combine to make it authentic for your family needs.
I always used the DK books to spark curiosity. I used whatever caught my daughter's attention in those books as a jumping off point so my daughter could do a deeper dive into a specific area of a topic. For example, my daughter found information on lichen really fascinating, so even though we did a botany unit, part of that was having my daughter go to the library, and online, to research more information and then propose either an experiment related to that topic or she would develop her own lesson plan and teach me. This approach really allowed her to do a deep dive and understand that learning isn't just about receiving information given to you, but also actively researching and learning about those things that are of interest to her.
Brilliant! Truly, when a student researches and teaches, it's some of the best learning possible. Sparking curiosity then diving deep is what a flexible teacher may facilitate. Often we may get caught up with our own lesson plans or the rigidity of the curriculum and minimize these tangents which are the light of learning, but when we follow that student's lead, usually the path is easier and the learning deeper. Well done!
I'd love to buy any resources you want to part with! I love your videos
Of course! Can you message me on IG so I can share pics.
@@PepperandPine yes mam!!!
I would be curious to know your thoughts on the revamped Earthschooling curriculum
I would love to take a look at it and share.
OMG! I didnt realize you’ve been posting content again ❤ I’ll have to go back and watch them.
Yep! A long 2 year break and now I'm doing videos while teaching my last child. Just a few years left.

Alhumdulillah :)
My goodness, did you take art classes?
I haven't yet, but I would love to improve my skills. So far I copy almost everything I draw.
@@PepperandPine your good!
@@PepperandPine I actually copied your forest chalk drawing. It's turning out really pretty. I wish I could post a pic
Hello, I wonder how this book compares to form drawing blocks in Waldorf homeschool curriculums? If i purchase Waldorf Essentials or Live Education etc, is it still worth buying this book, or will form drawing be covered in the curriculum?
I love these form drawing books and they contain far far more than what's in the curriculum. However, the curriculum provides enough for the lessons suggested, so the form drawing book would either be extra, additional inspiration or a replacement if you didn't have a curriculum that provided form drawing.
Homeschool room of my dreams 😍 ours is currently the dining room 😂
Thank you ☺️
OMG I literally started this idea to study with my 9 year old. Thank you so much for this post!!!
Glad it was helpful!
There's actually a re-release of that geography game out now!
Yes!! Just after I recorded this video I went looking and gasped with excitement. I’m trying to see if the manufacturer would like to send me some copies to show as we still play our original games and am not looking to buy a new set. But so far it’s been our favorite geography game and one that actually helped us learn the countries of the world and states of the US.
Omg you are back!! I'm so happy your videos are back. I will be binge watching this weekend! I don't have kids nor did I get to homeschool. Your videos always helped heal my inner child. I live vicariously through your homeschool.
What a beautiful message ❤️ I pray your inner child is well healed ❤️❤️
Hi Hannah I am soon happy to see you back on you tube. Thank you fir all you do!

This is incredibly detailed and helpful- thank you! Will you be doing an overview of 5th grade as well?
Thank you! Yes I hope to go grade by grade and include as in depth look as possible based on my experience and understanding. I’ve already done a few other grades, but I’ll do a more thorough overview when possible.

So glad to see you back on CZcams (but maybe you never left and my algorithm “hid” you)! I have a question about buying just the Live-Education teacher/instructor book. Are they available separately from the whole curriculum purchase (which was about 457.00+).

You find five fold symmetry in echinoderms like sea stars.
We will be in grade 6 th this coming school year! I'm looking forward to this lesson block!
Wonderful! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Newer to your channel but curious about why you do the drawings. They’re great drawings but does your daughter replicate what you do or how does that work? It caught my attention that you said she picked two and you picked two. Does she not do all of them?
Welcome! Good question. This time around with this unit I’m approaching things a little bit differently. I’m doing illustrations and written work in advance of presenting these lessons. Then she’ll copy the illustration and compose her own written work. For this lesson, I didn’t research ahead of time so she researched two kinds of mountains and I did two. Then we talked about our findings. We continued this lesson for almost a week. During that time, while she was occupied with other lessons, I did the illustrations which she later copied into her main lesson book. In the past, I might have done some chalk drawings or offered my student an illustration to copy from another source or ask them to come up with their own illustrations or skip the drawing altogether.
@@PepperandPine I see, that makes sense. We're just starting a similar process with a written work/summary but I'm trying to incorporate more drawings. Wish I had your drawing skills tho!!
Boy I wish I was your child and could do these lessons with you 😅
Hehe that’s very kind
Excellent tutorial 👌 👍
