Everything you need to play.... except a friend to play it with :(
You’re not alone on that one!
That hit too close to home

That is why I got myself 2 sons 😉
That’s why I developed a split personality!
Unfortunately, he’s “That Guy”
"Strangely, there is a lot of skulls." Sarcasm is strong with us today.
I'm glad that Stormcast is a shooty faction, just as space marines supposed to be.
TRIGGERED!
@@originalblob don't be triggered 😂😂
Game needs more shooty factions 😁
@@originalblob Shots fired!
You meant to say Sigmarines.
Oi, you'll see whem they start releasing the Simarchs, totally different from the Primarchs. I already have pre ordered my Dorgal Rorn and my Gouboute Rilliman. It's totally different you see?
Inb4 WH40K copied AoS threads plague the Internets.
Sad thing is, I'll buy this, assemble it, paint it, and use the vast majority of its contents for Frostgrave haha
I thought the same for Kings of War.
Thats what these boxes are meant for. Its GW fucking with warlord and wizkids. Without them having to openly declare war. Expect bards and wizzards next hahahhaa
Buying this for d&d
Not sad. Smart good sir. That's why these boxes are awesome!
I use them for that too. And DnD. You can never have too many minis/Scenery. I also play Warcry though 😅 (but I don't play Chaos)
Got to play it yesterday. I'm a 40k player and never really touch AoS but this is by far the easiest to learn, fastest to play and is genuinely fun to play game GW have possibly every released. I was pleasantly surprised by this game.
Pretty sure I'm buying this for the terrain and rulebook. The minis are a bonus.
True story
Wish list for boxed game.
No coloured plastic. ✅
Lots of terrain. ✅
New models. ✅
Dice with only one fun emblem ✅
Hans Gruber 30 yes I don’t like the coloured plastic with the starter sets. This is great coz it don’t have coloured plastic
I was on the fence but the box and the system sold me. This feels like a less dicey(for lack of better term) necromunda with a sprinkling of gorechosen. Plus i love the small gaming footprint. Tired of need big tables or table extenders to play these games.
What is/are Gorechosen?
Look it up. There are gameplays and breakdown on youtube.
The size is awesome. I agree about how you don't need a special table. We got a chance to play it this weekend. Each game was less than an hour. It was alternate activation, which I like. Models and terrain were great. The random agenda and twist that you pull at the beginning was cool too.
I cannot agree more I really wanted to get into kill team but the amount of dice rolling and the complexity of the rules really threw me, my friends and my brother off this however looks perfect with less dice rolling and more emphasis on Tactics and gameplay. It's what Kill Team should've been in my opinion.
I think GW is releasing way too many different games, but among them there is a gem here and there. Shadespire and Adeptus Titanicus are two of them, and this actually looks to be a third!
make 100 and you will remember the 10 good. i think that approach is better than make 3 good and 0 bad
they have to. its there product
Blackstone Fortress is awesome.
I'd love to get into either AoS or Warcry with my wife - we love the theme, the look of the models, we both are big into painting miniatures - but it's very daunting to see sprues like this - in the games we play heavily such as DnD, Mice and Mystics, Gloomhaven they are pre-assembled, this just looks like it will take as much time to glue up as it will be to paint and base (the part we don't mind). With a lot of the more RPG style miniature games we can at least play a scenario or two to decide "Ok, I like this faction/person I'm playing as. I'll go ahead and send the time painting them nicely". Or even: "Meh, this class isn't as fun he'll be on the back burner as we play though with our main guys." I can just see it now my wife waiting on me going "Can we paint yet!? When will they be ready!?"--"A week from now, then spend the next two weeks painting. We might be able to start playing this game next month." And I get it - seriously, I love taking my time painting certain models for weeks or more, and we all have those models that are truthfully never going to be done that we will fidget with forever. But to invest into a starter version of a game (and it's a sizable investment, think of if the new player wanting to start with the starter set but still needs paint/brushes/supplies/tools on top of practicing skills of painting on other models) then weeks later even be able to try the game for the first time to see if they even like; it seems daunting. The problem I see with Games Workshop games is that even starter kits are aimed for people who have been in the Games Workshop family of games for multiple iterations that can pick it up as a supplement for there collection they already have. I've tried so hard to even have my friends into Games Workshop games invite me over to watch them set up and play and explain to me what's going on and how to get into it - I've asked the hobby store workers, even the officially licensed "Games Workshop" outlet stores to explain the most simplistic way of getting the toes wet for this epic adventure and they start bombarding you with jargon that makes sense to their loyal fan base but not to people wanting to get into it for the first time. "Yea man, just grab these three books and then grab you a "hero/leader" model for your squad and only start with one or two squads, grab some Start Collecting bundles, and grab their lore books to understand if they are for you - Unless you can find Heresy area stuff then grab anything you can find. But don't worry about it now because 9th is coming soon so everything is going to be obsolete when the new Codex drops."...that is so many words that make perfectly good sense to anyone who currently understands this world but coming from something like Gloomhaven I just stand there and blink going "The hell does any of that mean? So buy some things but I don't know if I want these things because there's lots of other cool looking things, I can learn about these things from the hundreds of books but there isn't a format of the books that I should start with - just grab a book and it will tell me more about one of the factions I might or might not care about? And if I want to play this faction I need to buy another book that tells me the rules of this faction? But wait these books expire?! I need new rule books when new editions come out...is this like an Apple phone where yearly they expect me just to buy a new one?!"
So yeah - it's massively overwhelming - I just end up sitting here watching at least 11 different painting/warhammer channels going: "Yeah looks awesome." and being content with the spectator element of it all.
Wow, just look at all that terrain. That got me interested. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the peek into the box Atom!
Completely agree on the red plastic being softer than the grey.
I believe it's also faster
I hope they never use the yellow plastic from Speed Freeks ever again...
@@blacktemplar5970 Yes, but it only stays faster if it remains unpainted....lol
Thanks! Great video. Picking mine up tomorrow at my local FLGS!
Thanks for this. I was unplugged from GW's news, but this is a better way for me to hear about it - which is why I subscribe!
Yeah, I loved this from the initiative roll. It is fast, brutal and furious, no overly tactical, cautious sly playing in this game, you aim for the objective and batter your way to victory. The card system is a brilliant idea for making a level playing field. I got the core box, the first scenery expansion, my two favourite extra warbands, (birds and snakes), the annual, the nighthaunt box and I will be buying the Mausoleum set when restrictions are no longer needed as well as the beautiful new Khainite Shadows band. lol
(When I go all in, I mean all in.)
Excellent review and unboxing, thanks Uncle Atom!
Good video, Uncle Atom! Really love the box and seeing as the box I wanted for KT disappeared (ad-mech and GSC), definitely going to see about picking this one up. The terrain and beasties look fantastic, as well as the Untamed Beasts. Not a big Iron Golems fan though even they're pretty nice.
I had a chance to play some games of Warcry this weekend, and we had so much fun. Spent Friday night assembling everything.
The game itself plays pretty quickly. The terrain matters depending on situation. The models are fantastic, but there are some slender parts that may break off if you're not careful.
I totally agree on the colored plastic feeling softer!
No idea if it is, it just gives of that impression lol! Gray all the Way!
Great video and an excellent run down. Thanks!
You are most likely correct about the quality effect of coloration of plastic, they are almost certainly the same underlying plastics, but certain colors require much more or less of the color additives which can have some minor effect on the quality of the plastics. Red in particular is always a troublesome color.
Saved myself a ton of money and time by simply waiting a year on all of new releases from GW and seeing what is still being played by my local meta. Answer is Frostgrave.
What's that?
@@jakea3950 Basically none of the GW minor releases have not survived in my local meta. Frostgrave, a game by Joseph A. McCullough, released by Osprey games. it seems to remains a pretty constant favorite that we keep coming back to. Uncle Atom has spoken about Frostgrave on his channel. Point of fact is the new Warcry would do a treat for Frostgrave as well, which is model company agnostic.
Are there lots of rulebooks needed for frostgrave?
@@manga3040 No there is one rulebook. there are a number of additional campaign books that add scenarios though. one other, called maze of malcor adds some additional rules. all the additions are optional. check out the frostgrave group on fb. the author often comments on questions and rule clarifications.
@@kalfoxx7749 Awesome! Thanks man.
Thanks for the quick review.
That packaging and core book are beautiful. GW’s packaging team deserve a lot of credit.
Very excited for this.
Was so stoked when I saw this video
Great review of the stuff for the game. “I believe the word you are looking for is symbolism, what is the symbolism...” - boondocks saints
8:30 the board from the Kill Team starter set also only folded in half. I suspect the boards in the Ravaged Lands expansions will follow the KT format and fold into eights :)
Have always liked the idea of war bands; with all of the terrain it is worth considering. building them up into a separate force to add to a larger model count game. If I choose. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for the video. The information provided allows me to decide wether or not I should invest in this. Love the models in the box and the terrain looks fantastic. I'm not sold on the mechanics yet, probably have to see a few battle reports to understand it better.
Yeah, the terrain looks awesome!
I do love how much you talk with your hands 😂😂😂
Personally I’m excited that standard AoS models aren’t the base. That means any sort of elites or commander expansions will be hopefully more thought out and won’t feel like they’re just baiting you into a full scale army like kill team has done.
Willem Dafoe: Symbolism! The word is SYMBOLISM!
My mind always quotes that film when someone says it wrong
Looks amazing! Rules seam interesting. AoS is my favorite game and I have plenty of terrain but I need that stuff to add to it. Wish I could use the Godsworn Hunt mini's as a Warband and some Bloodreavers in this game.
If I remember correctly, the Kill Team Starter set board was similar and didn't fold down as much as the ones that came with the expansions.
I'm so glad it's not only chaos! Waiting for Skaven rules!
I just come back listen and listen to this. Appreciate for high quality sound and content vedio
Kinda wished they had used the Underworlds dice, stats, and combat mechanics to make what is essentially an open-board terrain-involved skirmish version of Underworlds. Easy to do.
Easy to do but then you need those special dice and people would have moaned that it wasn’t based on D6s so they can’t win either way.
I think the combat definitely has shades of Underworlds in there and is nice and simple
Hmm... "everything needed to play" AFTER model assembly and painting... two years later!
So yeah, everything needed to play.
"If you step on them"....Not a lot of plastic mini would survive that...unless it is a Reaper Bones fig. And damn you Uncle Atom, I do not want to get into this! I got enough with KT but this is exactly what I wanted...damn you and GW too. ;)
I love the idea of more terrain, GW NEeds to offer. More terrain
Check out GW ForgeWorld for some pretty cool terrain albeit a bit pricey.
I'll be honest, I dont like it in boxes. It skyrockets the price of the box set and you can get a lot more at reasonable prices from 3rd parties.
Oh I didn't know this was the 3 d printer comment section, I thought it was the mini one. Long hair dont care.
Jody B he was rude but the 3D printer comments are like telling someone struggling with an application to get Linux to fix the problem. It *can* be obnoxious.
There's a giant bell but no sign of Skaven? For shame.
Don't forget Nurgle.
I guess they'll be out later. All of the warbands made for this game are chaos so that's why they probably didn't release any other chaos warbands for now.
@@Malygon I hope they release cards for the wanderers because skirmish type battles are kind of their thing
The Kill Team core set came with a board folded that big, the kill zones came smaller.
I played my first game yesterday and today I have bought the starter set and the crazy bird dudes!
I would like to see you do a video on inexpensive warbands for the factions with only squads (you know, like the one you did for Kill Team). Love the videos. Hope you're not working too hard at Gen Con.
Fun terrain I could use for Zombicide hehe
They've also released rules for each Warband to be fielded in Age of Sigmar. Chaos, of course, but some of them are brutal
I love you Uncle Atom.
But my wallet thinks you’re the devil.
agreed
Agreed
What is it you really desire?
The folding size is the same as the kill team starter. Their scenario packs fold an additional time
I‘m already playing some AoS and I‘m totally into Warhammer Underworlds since Shadespire came out, but still I‘m waiting for Warcry! I guess I like the quick and dirty approach, plus I‘m a dad and beer and pretzel games, that can be played on a weekday night are the closest I get to a huge battle nowadays.
Been hoping for an age of sigmar game like this
Looking forward to getting started with this. Necromunda always looked too crunchy for my son and I to pick up, whereas this looks a lot more accessible.
For sure. Check out Blackstone Fortress! It is awesome! And you and your son can play it together. It's a great coop experience!
Necromunda is a bit numbers heavy. My son is 6 I play a watered down version with him. But I think this would be great
I'm glad I am not the only one that thinks the colored (non-grey) plastic is softer.
Good to know its not just chaos warbands in this game. I may pick it up now. The models look good but Ive just always been more of an Order player.
I get that from the colored plastic too. It feels just a little weaker, and it definitely doesn't take paint as well. Since Kill Team I've been actively avoiding it.
Could you make a video of playing this game for us? I love your explanations and would deffo watch a let's play from you.
Excellent video as always. You mentioned that Warcry is a one-stop shop sort of game. Once you assemble everything, punch out the tokens and all that good stuff, how good would they all be repacked in that same big box? I am assuming you'd only need to open the box, lay down the cardboard battlefield, add on the terrain pieces and then deploy the warbands - all from the same big box.
That's likely nearly impossible. Best case scenario is to have everything in the box except the terrain.
Gonna need a shitload of contrast paints for all that grey plastic !
I think with the icon system, it makes the game language independent.
Granberg Agreed. They can produce all the stat cards with symbols on them and then only have to worry about translating the rulebook which tells you what the symbols mean instead of translating EVERYTHING.
Hey Uncle Atom! Really love your channel. I'm super interested in Warcry, got out of Age of Sigmar but I think Warcry will get me back in. Was wondering about the play mat that comes with the box. Is it cardstock and does it fold? Thanks!
@@sleepysasquatchgames Thanks, he kinda says a little about it but just wanted to be sure.
I’m interested because it’s not “dicey” and crunchy like 40k. These smaller skirmish games are quickly taking my attention away from massive armies
I've always loved them, I like narrative campaigns over set pieces battles, and it's easier with Skirmish games.
*Cries in Seraphon*
Straight up, just buying this for the terrain haha
Why not wait for it to be released separately.
A Bridgeburner send me your Minis
Great vid & informative. I've been looking forward to this. My only worry is price & if the models are snap fit & any chance converting the models?
I don't think any of it is easy-build, but the poses are very dynamic so I doubt there's much choice in poseability without surgery and greenstuff.
I will listen to the VOICES as I hug my tattered Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Rulebook
Thanks for the video! I am really interested in this game and I appreciate the advice and close-up look at the contents.
Does Atom have any content on going to a game shop solo for the first time to play? I'm not at that point yet, trying to figure out which exact game... Sigmar, D&D, Infinity, 40k. Right now I'm just at the painting minis stage :)
Internet is also your friend :) some shops dont always run the same games and such. As an example I play 40k at a pretty normal lgs and infinity I play at this table top gaming cafe that specializes in board games.
Yah it's harder than I thought to start out. Lots of games, similar sounding, have to sort through my local games shop to see who plays what. I think I'll just show up one day and see what happens. I just went down to my local shop today and the woman working said something like "Yeah I don't know what they play now, I don't work on those days. They were making terrain the other day" So just bad timing I think.
You know, I’ve been wanting an excuse to get some Idoneth Deepkin. This could be it.
I got back into the hobby right after this set went out of print and was impossible to order online (no stationery shop nearby unfortunately) and the prices got doubled from the resellers.... this is one of those things i regret a lot.
One benefit of Iconography in board games is its easier to be language dependent. I don’t know if that’s something they were thinking about but maybe.
How do the creatures work? And who controls them? Also, where could I find a box set with them other than the starter set?
If your getting it make sure you get plastic glue, I got it but couldn't build because i didnt have glue
Kill Team's concept but better executed. Having tried and failed to get into Kill Team. This is what it should have been from day 1. Finally a REAL skirmish game with not so much dice spam and rolling as Kill Team. That said I still own the KT Manual as I don't want to give up on it yet.
Thats one thicc box.
Not sure on this 'new entry' boxes… I think the best way to get into the WH hobby is to buy minis that you like and then play with the free play rule of W40k or AoS. I find these easier and immediate than KT or this… maybe is only my impression… :)
Hey, thank you for review! Could you please say if there are any rpg elements at the game rules? I like the systems like Frostgrave, Mordheim and Necromunda because they have a good portion of "progression" mechanics. I like the scenario-style play within a campaign, when the results of previous battles affect your further battles. Does this game support such a style of play? Or should i look elsewhere? Thank you in advance!
Are you making a video on painting this stuff? Like your channel, keep on
I see some potential vespid wings in this kit!
I want this almost exclusively for the terrain.
I'm assuming it will be like the Kill Team Starter, and in 6 months you wont be able to buy it anymore? As popular as Kill Team is, it's getting hard to find any of the game specific box sets for it only a year later. It makes it hard for guys like me who dont have a lot of time to build and paint and dont want a huge pile of shame. This does look really good and right up my alley, so I guess I better jump on it quick!
I think you're possibly right. Anyone with their eye on this will probably do well not to hang about for too long, even if they don't plan to build/paint it up for a while.
radarcannon I am having the same issue with KT, all the teams are either discontinued or have to pay a lot more money 💰
@@mouseketeery that's what I'm going to do, but itll probably be winter before I get to building it!
The "iconography" thing, isn't game design specifically, it's actually to make translation cheaper. That symbol means the same thing in all languages, unlike words.
I'm keen to buy this boxset and trying out the new chaos warbands (really into the two from the box + the snake guys not yet up for order) but im really hoping they expand the rules to include sylvaneth.
Demo the game first.
Love the GAMEFOR tee shirt! Can we buy those?
I like them bridges
I’m so excited! A little worried my obituary will read “died from complications of being buried under a pile of unpainted plastic” 😂
Emily Yaceczko my life goal is to reduce that mountain.
However, that implies that I need to stop buying... so don’t see that happening in the future
Nice analyse and I love you re prononciation.
French guy 😉
Looks cool
Not my thing- but deffo looks interesting & lots of plastic is always a good thing! Thanks
Great Video!,
May i ask what camera lens you are using there on your DSLR?
I’m not shooting DSLR, I’m shooting mirrorless Micro Four Thirds. The main camera on me is using a 25mm f/1.7 and the second camera (on the product) is a 12-35mm f/2.8 but I forget where exactly I had it zoomed. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much, i have a Canon EOS 80D just using the default 18-50mm lens, been wondering about more suitable lens. Thank you very much, you're set up is fantastic and you can really see the effort put into it!
We have the same taste on warbands! Iron Golems looking probably the best, with bird men and beasts being close behind. The cypher guys probably come bottom of the list for me, all look kinda samey.
Stu R you can’t tell me the unmade look “Samey”
@@matthewbennett1972 huh dragging up some old comments I see... Never said anything about the unmade :)
Guess I’m late to the party.
you covered this in another video I recently watched - but again: why the heck, they don't sell that big "all you need to play" box anymore?!?!? As a beginner it is so much easier to get into a new game when you just can buy the complete box, ready to play.
Now I have to buy terrain separately, minis, rules, cards....all separately..... WHY?!
(I secretly know: because MONEY)
but still.....WHY?!
I want that giant stone head.
I would agree that the coloured spruee have less detail than the grey
I want everything in the box aside from the models lol.
it's kind of strange that the stormcast options are basically just vanguard. i dont see liberators, sequitors, etc
Always how to play bits should be photos and 2 pages of the models painted to super standard the rest should be art work brings it alive for me !
According to your 90/10 rule I now need to model for 200 mins.
Challenge accepted :D
Michael Peila I mean, painting for over 3 hours isn’t that long. Or maybe I’m just a slow painter.
@@coltonm3888 it's the finding the time that is the challenge
Yeah, that’s fair
I am sad there is no Seraphon support right out of the gate with Warcry :( I feel like some people who's factions are not represented in the game (like Beasts of Chaos) might just end up forgetting about Warcry.
True. But at the same time i think that the warbands stats can be "stolen" and be represented with the unlucky races. That is said without the rulebook on my hands ofc. It is probably not acepted in a competition but after all if you are just visually replacing the model and/or names with other... Who really cares? Idk like the untammed beast seem easy to be replaced by beastmen. The Corvus and/or the snake ones might be played with skaven minis.. And so on. Although some extra rules for everyone would be better, in the end if you are playing with a friend it should not matter too much.
At least i will have my "non morathi bullshit" dark elves playing probably as the snake guys (poison and such)..
Just pick up a warband that works like your own minis, and fill the roles. Maybe you can go with the lizards replacing the golems. Saurs here and there. A big kroxi as the ogor...
Maybe they'll update some Seraphon models before they add to warcry. There is some rumour images that look Seraphon
Wesley Chartrand no one has patience anymore. This just launched. All it takes is a little imagination and some agreement between players and boom you have skaven rules
