  • I have opened a discord server. Feel free to join! / discord Ushiro no Shoumen Daare or Who's Left Behind in English, is a war drama taking place in Japan during World War II. It is based on the real story of Kayoko Ebina who was a survivor of the war. This anime is definitely not as well known as for example Barefoot Gen or Grave of the Fireflies, but it is still a movie that I think more people should check out, if they are interested in war dramas.

I'm not dead! Yet... Exams are coming up for me now so it might still take another month in between videos again, but after that I should be able to go back to the normal schedule again.

The anime was so amazing and so very sad. One of the most saddest anime ever. Thank you for this review

This is why animation is a valuable medium - films like this can be made with practical efects or CG but at what cost and with what immersion (why don't they just animate films like the MCU is beyond me). And with all the nonsense around Korea and Iran and China building new nuclear silos and such, the subject is far from being merely historical even close to 80 years later. I haven't seen this film yet, so thanks for the spotlight.

Good review. Watched the film myself and honestly your description fits the bill, and while slice of life has its audience, I'm not the biggest fan. Barefoot Gen will always be my favorite in this weird anime niche here. I will say though, it was pretty entertaining and neat for what it was, and I appreciated the artwork as well as a deeper dive into how life was. Anyway man hope to see more from you once you've finished your exams.

Yeah it's definitely one of those movies that have been very much overshadowed by others like Grave of the Fireflies and Barefoot Gen, but I think it is a neat little film for those that want to watch more Japanese war dramas. I know I like stuff like this a lot, since it offers a different perspective than a lot of western movies about WWII

I admit, I'm not a fan of Grave and its storytelling. Seita's worst problems were partially the result of his own pride and stupidity, and I couldn't sympathize with him as much as I did for Setsuko. On the other hand, the portrayal of Kayoko's suffering was rooted in much more believable circumstances, and I ended up relating to her more than I ever did for Seita. Grave may be the more well-known film, but I prefer Ushiro by a long mile.

I like this movie. Tho I don't know why I kept watching them Japanese WWII animated movies & shorts -- I cried in each one of them 💔

I find them to be very interesting as they serve as different takes on a massive black mark on human history
