To be a woman in country music in the 90's and singing about AIDS/HIV was looked down upon. But Reba didn't care.

Reba is one of only two women in country music who could've put this song out without damaging her career. The other was Lorrie Morgan. These ladies were known for being tough in a business where strong women were not - and still are not - particularly appreciated.

@@georgegay4750 I agree, though I would add Martina McBride to that list. “Independence Day”…”Concrete Angel”…”A Broken Wing”.
Martina took on child abuse, spousal abuse.. And she did so boldly, fiercely. In ‘94, to bring out Independence Day as one of your career starting songs was gutsy, esp. in Country Music.😉

If you are to young to know this song is about a woman who after a one night stand would later find out she had AIDS. The quilt in the back round was just a small piece of a Large quilt that could cover many football fields.

This song was made to bring awareness to HIV/AIDS. She was supposed to perform this on the Late Show with David Letterman, but they told her it was too controversial and to perform something else. She refused and canceled the performance. Love Reba and her values and moral compass!

The actual music video shows it a bit more but it has to do AIDS. Reba is one of the few singers that actually acknowledged what was going on at the time. She sang this song as the AIDS epidemic in the late eighties and early nineties as happening. She got A LOT of crap from people. In this video, the image on the screen to the side of her are shots of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt.

I even named my dog after her. I REALLY recommend that you listen "The greatest man I never knew" By Reba. My dad was abusive and I never got to really know him and he never showed that he loved me because he was so consumed by his pain. Hey reba, I love Reba. My hometown is her hometown, Kiowa Oklahoma. My mom went to school with her.... my mom was in her brother's class, a grade below her, my uncle Mike was in her class. When I was in school, they have a large graduation portrait of her. Man,.. I remember going to all the local rodeo's and street dances, her parents were always there, sitting their lawns chairs or dancing, just enjoying life. They were the sweetest folks you'd ever meet, so was her brother. Even tho Reba was famous, they still acted like normal regular folks, and all us locals treated them the same like we did before she was famous. Thank you for reacting to Reba.

This is why Reba is the queen of country music. Beautiful lady with a beautiful voice, and she puts so much passion into everything she sings. You can tell that she's invested in the songs, and no one comes close to matching her. Her version of "Because of You" (a duet with the original singer, Kelly Clarkson) is so much better than Clarkson's solo performance, just because of the raw emotion Reba adds to it. I encourage you to look up the Kelly Clarkson version first, then watch the Reba version. You will not be disappointed.

What she was saying in the song was that the woman she was portraying when she was younger slept with a lot of men and couldn't really remember the names of most of them... but she believes the person that gave her AIDS, that his name was John and that is the reason why she would always remember that name and why she couldn't get that name off of her mind

Reba absolutely deserves all the respect in the world for having the nerve to broach this topic in the country music arena, but I would have to say what really woke my generation up was when it was announced that Magic Johnson had HIV. I was in 4th grade when AIDS really started to become a "thing", but still, most of the famous people who died were gay (openly or not) like Rock Hudson and Liberace; had been heavily into drugs; or in the case of Arthur Ashe, had had the misfortune to get a blood transfusion from a bad batch. My sophomore year of high school is when Magic Johnson announced he was positive. We happened to have a pep rally the day after, and it was mentioned then, and you could tell we were all still absorbing the news. That was the real slap upside the head for us.

Reba is real good for story songs> Here's two that I LOVE. One that always hits me like a truck, and one that's just a good story to me.
