I watched Stockton once when he was in college (Gonzaga). He was driving on a 1-on-1 breakaway and my Dad says, "watch this - he'll score" and Stockton does this really intelligent move to score on the defender. This was one of his great attributes, which you see in the video here. He knew how to control his body and the space between himself and the defender, and get the ball into the hoop in the most efficient way. Too bad he didn't get to play with Larry Bird - that would have been an unbelievable pair.

The greatest three attributes a star athlete can have is: consistency, poise, and durability. There was no one in the history of basketball who epitomized all of these traits at the level of John Stockton. And he played both ends of the floor. Now, Magic was a physical freak but if you're asking who the best pure PG is that ever lived? It's Stockton. And this idea that because he didn't win a title he isn't as good as Thomas is absurd. Those Pistons teams had way, way, more overall talent than the Jazz. If you replaced Magic with Stockton or Isaiah with Stockton it's not like he wouldn't have won multiple championships . And there's a 0.0% chance Magic or Thomas would have won a title replacing Stock on Utah.

Because Stockton isn't as good as Isiah Thomas. Stockton benefited from having arguably a top 5 power forward. And he couldn't win a championship against Jordan. While Isiah Thomas tortured Jordan in 80s to the point where Jordan to this day still hates him for abusing him. Stockton is a great pg but no let's be real in he wasn't even the best player on his own team.

We all loved John Stockton; that is undeniable. But, the question was "Who is the best point guard of all-time?" John Stockton is definitely in the conversation. However, what are you going to do about Oscar Robertson? Assists are great; ask Carl Malone about that. But, Oscar averaged a triple double for his CAREER! That stat is absolutely ridiculous! I will go so far as to say that if there was NO Oscar Robertson then, there would be no NBA, as we know it, today! Because you are not old enough to have seen Oscar or Wilt play, complain to your parents, not to basketball historians.

Oscar average a triple double for one season, and got close to one for a stretch of about five years-- although not his whole career. Oscar is definitely an all time great. Honestly though, no one went out looking for Triple Doubles like that until LeBron came along and the media was trying to figure out a way to argue James was better than Jordan. Couldn't do it with titles, scoring, clutch ability, etc., but Lebron was better at the T-D, so everyone hyped him up and pointed to the Big O. I mean Westbrook did it for THREE seasons, and no one thinks he's close to being the best ever. Not taking anything away from the man, I just think he was missing something when it came to being a perfect PG.
