@@tbullivant with this diesel cooktop, it’s technically only one ring that heats - and then the other is heated from the overspill of heat produced, so not seperately controlled or heated. So you can slide pots/pans across to the slightly cooler side but have no control over it temp wise…does this make sense?

I sat and watched this with interest. I put lpg in my van about two years or so ago and if I knew then what I know now I would not have put it in there. If I could swap it for a diesel option that would have been far easier. I know some diesel cooktops double as a heating source aswell which is interesting 😘 Very informative Mel absolutely love your content 😘

Why? Is something happening in the UK ref LPG?, Over here in mainland Europe their are more LPG stations than there has even been and it's growing, When I started touring Spain 22 years ago, there was none, now there are thousands, I also toured Eastern Europe and in the last 10 years it's grown. I think changing to diesel in Mel's case is interesting but a mistake for many reasons, Diesel is expensive LPG on average is half the price.I think Mel is jumping the gun on this issue. Each diesel system he fits is like a mini diesel engine, more complicated less efficient and using a fuel twice the price.
Unless he is planning to go to outer Mongolia or tour Russia then I see why he's doing it?.

  • @voyageadventurevans
    @voyageadventurevans Před 4 měsíci +3

I have fitted a few diesel hobs. They do take s long timeb to warm up. But perhaps my biggest issue is the fact that they need so much space below them for the exhaust ducting. They also only have a certain max length for the exhaust and it can dictate the position a bit.
My biggest problem is replacing the oven. Unless you fancy a cupboard full of various cooking options that have to be set up on the worktop each time , there is very little that will come anyway near a gas oven and hob for convenience.
If you manage your other facilities like diesel heating, then an unferslung tsnk will manage many weeks when only cooking. ...not heating.
So even if i have to go 50 miles out of my way a few times a year then its still gas for me.

41:42 for a few minutes - from an engineering standpoint the horizontal webs you're screwing into are only there to stop the vertical load-bearing webs twisting out of shape. For the main part of the floor where all load is downwards it makes little difference but for that one beam where there is potential lifting you should be putting in substantial bridging pieces attached to the vertical webs & fastening to those instead, perhaps even with bolts right through the rail into a thick bracing piece underneath.

Interesting video as always Mel. I would consider the diesel cook top if it could run on bio diesel. To be honest I think LPG will be around just as long as diesel. LPG produceers are already looking at blended and synthetic replacements for LPG. I went for botted gas for cooking only as we are weekend warriors and holiday campers only. Our 7kg bottle is only half used after 1 year!! But we do use hookup on sites and solar for kettle, air fryer and toaster oven when the solar power is good.. The secret is not to be too reliant on any one source of power. The van looks like it will be epic.

I actually wonder why people use the off grid term so regularly when this lifestyle or that of people in things like Narrowboats is just about the opposite of off grid tbh.
It seems to me that people who choose this lifestyle are actually far more reliant on the grid and it's services/benefits than a lot of other folk tbh.
Not wanting to work a 9-5 job or use a particular form of energy isn't off grid imo but simply using the grid in a different way.
If people are relying on income from social media, Govt., or whatever or still require roads, facilities or easy access to food, water, technology and whatever else then they're as much or more grid tied we are, for example, and we live in a house in town.
I'm not hating on the lifestyle as I don't mind seeing different ways of life but this term makes no sense to me when used this way.

@@oldbloke204 I'm guessing todays meaning of 'off grid' means not being permanently hooked up to an address, electric, gas, and sewage etc but yes, probably most or all in the modern world do depend on 'the grid' very much in one way or another.
The grid is actually rather amazing in my eyes, it can be expensive for some but hey! It is a luxury to be fair.
Press a button and washing will come out clean and dry.
Flush the toilet and poop magically disappears...I could go on and on 😆

@@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN Yeah it's weird way of describing it imo.
During the health thing a few years back towns here closed down to travellers due to the lack of health facilities and those that were permanent travellers were basically toast until some farmers/homeowners opened up their land for them to camp on.
I don't consider us to be off grid but we could last for a month or more on the supplies we have, we harvest rainwater and firewood, have a wood stove and cellar etc etc.
If I was concerned we could load up on food and whatever and last for a long time.
We also don't need income from a job etc.
It seems that this type of off grid freedom only works when the grid is readily available and working properly imo.

Having tried the expensive version of this stove in a hired campervan, for my build I decided to go with induction for pans, and an electric kettle for cuppas. Why? Well the one I used took over ten minutes to boil the kettle (two mugs measured fill), and then I was left with a nice space heater while it cooled down, which on a hot and humid morning, I wasn't keen on. For the rest of that holiday I ended up using my Jetboil for making hot drinks.
For normal cooking it was ok, but still throws out a lot of extra heat, and lacks the ability to instantly control the level of heat like gas or induction.
I applaud with your decision to have a gasless van and really hope that you enjoy your JP hob, but they are not for me. (Nothing against JP, I have one of their Combi boilers and it is excellent)

I'm not sure how wide spread LPG is in the UK, But for us in mainland Western and even in eastern Europe it's wide spread and not a problem, I guess you have your reasons for wanting to use diesel but I would rather use LPG. A friend of mine checked what the cost was for using different fuel for heating and cooking plus the 3 way fridge and found LPG to be the best, manly due to the cost ie LPG is much cheaper, The refillable option (which I have) is great and I would not be without it. In fact I have looked at the possibility of fitting a duel fuel system to my van, But worked out I don't do the km's to justify the outlay.

When Gordon Ramsey switches to Induction, so will I

  • @richardhewitt.easyvanlife.6957

I know you want to be Gas free, but that cooker don’t work very well. I love my Gas cooker and don’t fancy anything else. The electric air fryer and things like that are ok in the summer with solar coming in. When the Gas runs out from Russia or wherever. I shall be in a hole in the ground.

All the gas’s are directed to the outside of the van just like a diesel heater

Sorry Mel not with you on this one, surly LPG is cheaper than diesel 🤷🏼‍♂️plus 21 minutes to cook a egg 🤯
It cost me £7 last time I filled my LPG tank 40ltr and that was a long time ago
But I guess if you don’t try you don’t know

      @pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN Před 4 měsíci

@@gatecrasher1970 It would take a large van roof and unless they can be tilted, bifacial would be useless. Laying portable solar panels out on the ground isn't always practical, that depends on the location.
Low power consuming devices are generally better for UK winter vanlife.
