  • The Right Opinion: Why Daniel Howell Is Important - The Power Of "Coming Out" | TRO
Now, by the time this video is released it’ll probably mid July earliest, anything before that will probably be a miracle, and I’ll have to find a way to celebrate, but given my track record of how to quote “celebrate” I might open myself up to suggestions. But yeah, it’s Pride Month and I assume most of you guys have the memo for what happens, it’s nothing too defined, but then again, neither is the community.
The community has a very significant online presence, and it’s perfectly natural that many people may take the hopefully supportive atmosphere to talk about their experiences, or even come out themselves. CZcams, in spite of its often rocky relationship with the LGBT community, for many justified reasons, provided one of the greatest, most personal mediums for creators to have unique moments that would not be captured on the TV. Making the individual the direct owner of their creation, managed to create content more personal, and with personal content, comes personal problems. One of those prevailing problems was sexuality.
The internet is a hotbed of social outcasts, for many reasons, and CZcams was a platform for those people to converge in a place where they didn’t need the socially accepted qualifications to go places. This led to a real platform for the LGBT community, with one of the real staples being “coming out videos”. Coming out videos are pretty self-explanatory, they involve one individual coming out as LGBT to friends, family, or even you, the audience. It was a meaningful experience often for both creators, who may have felt isolated in their moment of vulnerability, and audiences who may be looking for guidance on how to traverse these scenarios themselves. CZcams has been important for that.
However, it’s certainly not every day a highly popular, reputable public CZcams figure decides not just to come out, but to come out in a way that deals with it in an incredibly introspective and detailed fashion with multiple social statements. However, the individual that I have decided to cover today has just done that, that individual is Daniel Howell, also known from the CZcams duo: Dan and Phil.
Howell is bona fide CZcams unit, he’s been on the platform since 2009, and really does represent the wholesome online come up that many people like to visualise regarding the website. His style definitely represented the syndicate of sketch CZcamsrs that were sprouting from the fertile earth at that point, but make no mistake, Howell was his own creator, and definitely represented the Brits well on that side, capturing the irony tainted cynicism that is signature to much of our humour. It’s also content that has aged incredibly well, in this video, he basically predicts stan culture.
Nonetheless, in spite of the very idiosyncratically British tone, this received appreciation across the globe, and his channel proceeded to gain a strong amount of traction, he continued to work with his compadre Phil Lester, of AmazingPhil, and created this entertaining sketch content, that continued to thrive for a good few years. Increasing production values, furthering the creative vision, working on new channels, such as their epic gaming ventures, and moving beyond CZcams, most notably to their show on BBC Radio 1 very aptly named: Dan and Phil.
The fact that at a time, where CZcams still wasn’t quite at its level of cultural magnitude, a pair of British lads could use that content to gain a spot on arguably the most iconic British radio station should be a real testament to how significant they were in the landscape of CZcams.
However, when you have all that fame dropped in your lap, you sometimes find it difficult to express who you really are. Content will always be reflective of an individual to an extent, but at the same time it’s not gonna tell you who the person behind the camera is, and people start to theorise, for various reasons that we’ll break down in a bit. Fan fictions, and the rest, Dan even entertained a purposefully bizarre fanfiction which, in hindsight think was meant to be a bait-and-switch for those who wanted to find out more about their relationship, perhaps even taking a pot shot at those same theorists.
I always received the impression that many of Dan’s videos were just meant to be ironic takedowns masqueraded in fan popular content, I kinda love it. Nonetheless, the theories remained, and persisted, and at a point, Dan just went kinda quiet on the content front, now, unlike Phil, he was not necessarily known for his incredibly regular uploads, and when you get this deep into your career sometimes it’s therapeutic to take a break, and it wasn’t like he fell off the face of the earth, so no-one was really ready for what he was about to drop.

I think the pressure Dan was put under by his fans was awful, so I'm really glad he was eventually able to come out on his own terms.
He'd had so many insecurities with being gay anyway, and I really feel that the section of his fanbase who wouldn't talk about anything other than his sexuality and potential partners didn't help at all.

Still though, the toxicity of the phandom at its peak was awful.

    • @longlivethegays
      @longlivethegays Před 4 lety +103

I get where you're coming from and I admit that a very large, dominant part of the phandom was like that for a long time but I would like to say, as someone who was a casual viewer for many years and only got more involved in the last two, I think you'd be surprised at how their audience has developed and matured.
Of course, there will always be different kinds of subgroups in a fandom, but after last year, with Dan and Phil's last tour, they were able to see their audience in a larger scope and they say now (having previously made jokes about the viewers being a very specific type of people) that the people that watch them are in fact a very diverse group that actually no longer fits this description you are hinting at.
As time passes I hope people will come to see that the "phandom" has morphed into a very different fandom and even though we'll still spam many comment sections, you will find that there is no need to generalise this audience anymore.

    • @CryptP
      @CryptP Před 4 lety +52

@@longlivethegays I understand that the fanbase has matured a lot, and I'm certainly not saying that all Dan and Phil fans were like this and always will be. But it should certainly be noted that a very significant, very vocal, and incredibly visible (Even to Dan and Phil themselves) portion of that fanbase did put a lot of pressure on them about their relationships and about their sexuality. I'm not making a point about how Dan and Phil fans are all awful and always will be. My point is that there was a lot of toxicity in that sphere for a long time, and that Dan and Phil were definitely being put under a lot of pressure by their fans.

I am very straight and happily married to a beautiful woman. But I am a pacifist when I can be and believe in the power of love. I cry at Disney movies and love baking sweets. I was never gay but had the ridicule of those who believes I was. I can sympathize with his childhood and can relate on a disturbing level. People can be so terrible and my own personal torture was based on a completely false belief that even my parents started to believe. To all my gay brothers and sisters out there: you have a straight guy in your corner who can relate to the abuse and willing to fight for you. Love will always win.

      Yeah....
I never got why the term "gay" became an insult in certain circles...
Sexuality and behavior are not realy linked, unlike what certain people would like to assume.
You can be the manliest man on Earth and still be gay.
Just like how you can be a sweet, sensitive man, and be the straightest man on Earth.
There is nothing wrong with sensibility and being in touch with a more feminine side of ourselves.
      In the end.
Masculine and femminile behaviours are purely cultural things...
      I mean.
In western society, the lady was usualy restricted to the kitchen.
      And yeeeet.
In traditional hawaiian culture, the MAN is the king of the kitchen.
Then there are the obvious paradoxes like...
In the past we believed a woman's role was to cook...
      Buuuuuut.
Only males could be chefs or bakers.
Only males were allowed to make a profession out of this stuff that womens made daily...

I am currently beginning the process of looking into transitioning from male at the age of 33.
I grew up in a christian cult with an abusive father who would beat me just for walking "too feminine". I've spent most of my life wearing masculinity as a mask, armor to protect myself against ever being a victim again.
Now I've realized that this "armor" is slowly killing me, and when I decided to begin this journey, it was literally the first time in my life where I actually began to want to live, and yet it is the most terrifying thing I have ever looked at doing.

Armor at first seems like a great protection, but it's a heavy burden and wearing it will tire you out till you can't move anymore and die where you've fallen. That's why it's important to support and accept each other so that people wouldn't need this armor.
I'm glad you have an opportunity to get rid of it and be who you really are. I really hope that things will only get better for you from now on and that you'll be surrounded by a community that you'll be safe and happy around.

Dan and Phil in particular had a horrible time with fans dand shipping. Its what pushed me away from their content when I was younger. End of the day if they don't want to talk about it online then they really shouldn't. I would not be shocked if it put a strain on their relationship regardless of what it is. PJ and Chris who were also quite close with Dan and Phil and had a similar fan base ended up stopping seeing each other because of the shipping.

Honestly one of the biggest reasons I never watched any of their content before Dan's coming out video was because of how crazy some of the fans were into the idea that Dan and Phil had to be a couple. I just find it disturbing when fans ship two real people together. It's just so creepy. And with the phandom before I joined I just assumed that all of the fans shipped them together and that deterred me from watching any of their content. It gets worse when you see so many fans who felt entitled to know the truth and I can understand how it took both Dan and Phil so long to come out to their audiences. Like first off even if Dan stated in his video that he doesn't want people to bother him and Phil about whatever their relationship may or may not be, many fans still will and he knows that. He's known that for a long time and he doesn't want to disclose that to his audience and I just wish some of these fans would stop.

OK, focusing on just one specific thing here, but this just really struck me. You are gay, struggled with that because you didn't match the stereotype, and didn't figure it out and accept it until you were 18? That is literally my story. Sorry, that just struck a chord with me. I associate with that feeling-like-you-lost-time thing so much. I never got to experience what young love is like, and really couldn't start trying things until two years ago because I just couldn't figure myself out.
I want to share this to any youngsters who may be feeling similarly. If you have any specific idea of what "hetero", "gay" or anything else is meant to be, please trust me, those ideas are wrong. Sexuality is a spectrum with endless variation. Everyone is different, you just fall somewhere on that spectrum. Remember, no matter who you love, it's OK. Whether you like males, females, both, neither, non-binary people, nobody at all, it's all OK. If you try to put yourself in a box, there's a good chance you may find none of the boxes you know will fit. Not to tell anyone how realising their sexuality works, but I found that the realisation of "those boxes don't exist" were really what set me free.

God I literally just came about accepting that I was bi just before Christmas last year at the good age of 18. I grew up in a household where gay is an insult and you'd get made fun of for deviating from the norm (being the youngest of three sons is great.) It wasn't until I stopped speaking so freely to my family and only spoke truly to very very close friends that I realized that I'm barely 50% straight.

Theres such a stigma around people who are a specific sexuality that pisses me off. It actually pisses me off when people make these stigmas more and more prevalent. To be gay, you gotta like girly shit, you gotta talk feminine, you gotta act different. You basically gotta make your sexuality, your personality. And people support this stereotype I've found are the worst types of people too.

    • @TheMarc1k1
      @TheMarc1k1 Před 4 lety +26

@@JG_Wentworth Well the problem there is that there are a lot of homosexuals and heterosexuals that naturally fit into what is considered the stereotype but it's just them being themselves, does that make it wrong? Society, well human beings in general, aren't the best at applying complicated concepts to large groups of people because it's hard to keep track of a lot of these things in day to day life, so society creates labels for folks depending on what they broadly fit into, this obviously isn't a perfect system but instead of trying to move away from it people have seemingly decided that doubling down on it and creating a million more labels thus destroying the whole point of this flawed, simplified system.
We'd be better teaching people that their sexuality isn't the end all be all of your character as some would like to claim and that regardless of what you find attractive, what should always come first is who you are as a person and that this is how you should be judging people rather than by factors they could not possibly of had a hand in.

I’ve been struggling with my sexuality since then because I haven’t had the chance to explore a relationship with a woman. I feel horrible for lusting after women while I’m in a wonderful relationship. My fiancé says that it’s okay and understandable, but I just can’t help feeling like I’m a bad person. EXACTLY. I can't understand why people don't stop and think for two seconds about how even if their "fave" is gay/bi...*maybe* if everyone doesn't know right now there's a reason??? And thus maybe they should leave them the heck alone about it?
I'm not even talking about safety or the emotional minefield of coming out to ALL your family and friends, though ofc that's so huge, even if you're rich and famous...but people just don't consider things like, maybe this person is still coming to terms with what their sexuality is themselves, or they want their first-dates/kisses with another woman/man to be private? *Oh, how cowardly, how dare they.* Like, what?
And if they're at all famous maybe they don't want to deal with them and their every date being followed and watched? Or maybe they don't want every relationship put under the unique pressure of "we HAVE to make this work if we can, not just cause I love you, but tons of people online are invested emotionally in us as a couple and as much as I try to tell myself they'll support me no matter what and maybe they will...Christ that's a lot of eyes on us"...god, just thinking of that stresses me out. It's like the pressure of a super public proposal except on *your entire relationship.*
Or it could be as simple as...a sorta-celebrity already kind of has a lot of their life out in the open and maybe, just maybe, they want to keep one single part of their life private while they still can? They should have the absolute right to do that without having to constantly feel like people are guessing and getting close to the password to unlock the one part of their life they can really call their own?
I just think people really just forget their faves are people, who they do not actually know personally, and that they aren't *entitled* to know everything about every part of their lives. People don't HAVE to put all their life online for everyone to see, and for some reason some fans, just totally forget both empathy and any sense of boundaries when it comes to their faves. They really get to acting like "Karens" who feel like they OWN something, and they *have* to have things they want from that thing and RIGHT NOW...except that thing is...a human person.

I'd say coming out is a lot easier when you don't make people think about your sexuality when they're around you, and you have good friends that you know wouldn't judge you. Well, that's all subjective at the end of the day. A person could easily decide they aren't attracted to the same sex and therefore stop identifying as lesbian, gay or other. You do know that there isn't anything wrong with actually choosing to be gay, straight or lesbian right? Sure you could argue that you can't stop your body from feeling a type of way for the same sex but that doesn't mean you are born this way or that way. There are so many different types of sexual orientations because people choose to not simply be known as gay or straight that is the whole point of having a sexual preference. There is also still the case of Bi curious people, how do you explain them because as far as I'm aware Bi curious people will often have to decide if they are sexually attracted to the same sex or not.
I do not think you are wrong, but I also don't think your right. I agree that sexuality is not a choice, no one can stop there feelings but it's rather ignorant to say that being gay isn't a choice. You could be 100% straight and still be attracted to the same sex.

(Disclaimer I love your content TRO this is really minor constructive critisism as to why a new viewer or a person passing though may pass up your channel. However, with me stating these I personally feel you make these criticisms work for you very well. It's just me blanketing an average user.)
      1. Length, a majority of his videos are lengthy and most scrolling though CZcams do not want to watch video 30 minutes to and hour long video they immediately pass over or it does not keep there attention.
      2. He is sometimes behind on the upload. Now and days topics come and go so quickly. Look at James Charles for example that topic blew up and was go in a week? However while late on the upload at times he does take great care in the presentation and research giving a much better quality video.
      3. Unbiased yes some want the information without it being over saturated with the creators personal opinions. However there are quite a few I see who do want that. I'm not saying TRO doesnt add his personal opinion it is more analytical and when it's not he's very clear short and to the point but he's not nessesarily "playing into the drama" as many commentary channels do.

Dan is honestly so inspirational. I never had trouble coming out (to most people) but so many people do. I went to high school with a few people who got kicked out for being gay and/or trans. One of my friends, Andrew, actually had to go through the legal processes of moving out of his mother's house because she refused to even hear him out. It's not an easy world out there.
Dan and his sincerity and genuinely caring, while still sarcastic and cynical, nature make me smile, and makes so many people feel happy. I watched him and fill through my emo days, through my gender and sexuality exploration days, and even now I'm my newly adult heading to college years. It makes me feel so better reading the comments of all of these people who didnt realize they were gay until they were adults.
I tried so hard to be attracted to women all through my teen years. I had so many girlfriends, but it always just felt like I had a friend who I had to treat romantically.
When I was 16, I thought I might be bi, but continued to exclusively date women, and never bring up my attraction to men.
When I was 20, it just clicked. I only think about men romantically. If I kiss a women, I feel nothing. If I kiss a man, I melt. It was just so ingrained in me that I was supposed to like women, that my brain just refused to process that I was gay.
I was bullied pretty heavily, so maybe I just felt that being gay would make me a complete outsider around my peers. I feared rejection from my family and friends. I know I'm not saying anything that contributes much, but it makes me feel a bit less alone to know that other people have had the same experience.

loving this video! there's an extreme pressure to come out in society, especially if you are popular in social media, but it essentially needs to come back to if the person is comfortable with coming out. there are always so many things behind the scenes that the audience doesn't see and doesn't consider when pushing creators to reveal their sexualities.

Hell, YEAH. Scissor Sisters! I'll always remember when my peers laughed at me when I played this song on bluetooth.
They will never understand true greatness.
On a more important note, bullying is horrible. I've only been on the receiving end to a small degree, so my heart really goes out to those who have experienced it and those who are currently facing it.

That video helped me so much. I cried at the end because he told me I was valid. I didn’t realize how much I needed that even if it wasn’t direct.

Dan’s video means a lot to me and I’m sure it means equally as much, if not more to others. I have never had a difficult time coming out and I’m extremely lucky because of it, though I do have friends struggling with it and Dan’s video really helps explain how horrible it is. His sarcastic and negative attitude has a special place in my heart and I’m still proud of him for doing this. I know this comment is really, really late but I just wanted to share. Aaaaaaa

Your comments at the end really struck a chord with me. I also had to sort of... come out to myself. I was also just, waiting to be attracted to women, like all the other boys were. I didn't understand what somebody meant when they said someone was sexy, or hot. It was so ingrained in me from such a young age that men like women, and women like men. It never even occurred to me that wasn't always the case until it was too late. It really, really means a lot to hear other people talking about this kind of thing, because for so long I felt so invisible. By the time I had started questioning my sexuality, and started reaching out to people, it's almost like they were afraid to tell me anything I didn't already understand, that it's okay to be gay, or that all that matters is what feels right, but nothing felt right. I finally found myself at 17, but ever since then, I agree, it feels like so much of my time was wasted. While I was squandering myself in fear and self-loathing, my peers were in relationships, having fun, growing and discovering themselves. Some of them were even LGBTQ, and were navigating that landscape as a teenager better than I can now at 22. It feels like I was cheated out my "glory days".
I don't really know you that well, TRO, but thank you. Hearing your thoughts about this made me feel a little less alone in the world.

As a gay teen, Dan Howell’s video is really inspirational to me and I’m planning to come out soon and he has helped just by his video.

I don't know if any person will ever read this but i'll type it either way.
The part that was edited by Biodegradable had rather loud or "piercing" background music. Apart from this point everything else was clean edited where in transisions were aline with the dialog. The colorschemes were also complemantary to the tone and momentum of the parts. I didn't dislike the editing and I maybe be rambling but I wanted to type this regard less.

I’m extremely against RLS (real life ships) and I feel like he was very pressured to come out. Obviously it’s ok to come out but the underlying pressures he went through being shipped with one of his friends, I know I would find that really awkward.

Nah. He was on break from his channel after the tour and during those months we didn't really have that many updates only from other peoples updates. During those months he was trying to come out to his family first which is pretty important before starting your coming out video.
