Love your videos, It's a breath of fresh air to see a master mechanic at work, sadly today so many are just parts changers and can't diagnose the problems.
The 3388 had the same engine as the 1086. We bought a 3388 new around 1979. Prior to it we bought a new 986. Our farm was sold in 1981 when I was 14 years old. I got to operate almost every tractor and attachment we had.
In1980 that tractor design must have been so different as it still looks now. I just looked it up its not a heavy tractor about 7t and 150hp, it looks a lot more but with the engine slung right out the front I imagine with standard weights it must have superior traction. Some of the 1980s tractors we had in Britain like the Fords had the fuel tank out font that made the bonnet nearly as long but not on this level. What a cool tractor I have never seen one in Europe, thanks.
Back in 1980 was a mechanic for a IH dealer and worked on these bad boys(3588). Had one with head gasket leak, removed head and found the 4 pistons were missing one wrist pin retainer. The cylinder walls had a grove from wear. Tractor ran fine. Had to put new sleeves and piston and head gasket. The differentials were weak and would go out, steering hydraulic would give problems. Getting old that was 37 yrs ago.
When the blower wheels are coated with 1/8 inch of dust it will only push about 50% of the air ,The condenser coil must be dirty also . All must be cleaned . Too much oil can slug the compressor and destroy it . This is likely a TX valve system ; The charge is by weight or 10 degrees subcooling on the liquid line .
oil over charge gives you two phase flow as it piles up in the system, plus it slows down the boiling action of the refrigerant in the evaporator. Great job Warren.

Had to do the same thing to my new to me JD 5320. All 4 cabin air filters completely impacted with filth and the coils were dirty. Also had to repair the condensing coil. Simple maintenance that people tend to forget about till it fails.
amos snow I recently bought a 1978 Massey 1085. When I went to do routine maintenance all the filters were dated 1983. I could have started a whole new outfit with the dirt that blew out of the cabin air filter alone.
Thanks for the video! The sliding engine cover is absolutely great. If you want a machine to be maintained properly, you have to make it easy, for god's sake! Allow for space for it, designers!!
We have several 3588 still working in the fields here locally. They still look brand new as does all other equipment. Farmers here take care of there equipment and most wash and wax 2 times a year. Not much done this year in the fields due to all of the flooding of Mississippi river.
There is 3 of these tractors within a 15 mile radius of my house in NY. We call them a 2+2. I have operator all 3 of them. The radio in one of them had a 8 track. Lol thanks for sharing!

Dude ,I grew up north of Chicago. I made a mistake and moved to south Carolina in 91. The 100 degree temps with 90 percent humidity is a killer! Over the years ive had several heat strokes and now suffer from heat related illness. I'm ready to move. When it gets 85&up I get heat cramps so bad I can't move or think straight! When I work on machinery that's hot I just want to run away and go home!
Combines from the 1980's the AC would stop cooling, expansion valve had a screen and would plug up from rubber particles. Guess when the hoses were made nobody cleaned them out at the factory.
First second I looked on this tractors long nose. I had the image of a Battlestar Galactica fighter. A little research. And they started manufacturing this tractor the same year that show first aired.
It is something how college educated engineers can design something that is almost impossible to work on. No room, or other things are in the way, and have to be removed to get to what you need to work on. I always believed that these engineering geniuses should be required to work in the field a couple of years BEFORE graduating school.
When dealing with a R12 system that’s been converted to 134A, they never cool worth a damn! I’ve started charging them with R152A instead. It’s a closer equivalent to R12, and cools much better, and less leak prone! I’ve gotten 38 degrees at the vents with it before. R152a is easily obtained too. It’s air duster. The stuff you clean keyboards and stuff with. About $7 a can. Use a can clamp that fits old R12 cans, works just fine. Used it on many things over the years, never had any ill-effects.
Hell, even a lot of factory 134a systems don't cool for shit. Sometimes they will if you're really moving, but as soon as you slow down - or, god forbid, stop - you start getting warm air out the vents. I got 6 unconverted R-12 cars. Thankfully, the only one that needs a charge (and some parts) doesn't get driven these days.
I have all older vehicles before electric fans just the one on water pump I put good sized electric fans on ac condenser on them all works good ac 134a works good at highway speed but in traffic have to run electric fan made lot of difference they need lot more air through condenser to work

You would see cars stop along road to look at the weird looking tractor. One guy ask if we built that out of 2 old tractors.😂I told him no IH build it out of 2 new tractor. He just looked at me and said OW and left. That made my day! I'm sure he thought I was a smartass kid. He would be right!😜
This is a good example of when a vacuum pump could come in handy. Pump down the system and see if it hold a a vacuum for 20 or 30 mins. Saves refrigerant and can show even a slow leak.
Those tractors have been held in high regard by some and in disdain by others. I think they were a bit ahead of their time. The 86 series tractors never did seal very good on top. I used to have the same problem with mine and found out early on you had to service the air system frequently by doing the same as you and keeping good filters in it. Little maintence goes a long way sometimes.
This is one of the tractor models that eventuallycaused IH to sell out to Case. IH made good tractors until they started the 86 series. To save money, they put more powerful engines on the same old drivetrain that served them well in the 56 and 66 series tractors. The added hp was too much for the spider gears and they went out regularly at about 1,400 hours making for an expensive repair. I must praise, however, the IH engines. They made solid, long lasting, and dependable good pulling engines. If International had upgraded the rear ends of the 86 series tractors and beefed up their wide front ends they might have become the purchasers of Case rather than the other way round. Enjoy your videos Warren and admire your work ethic. You have a very analytic mind on figuring out a problem and how to work through it to a solution. You are sadly a dying breed my friend.
I know that most farmers are tighter than bark on a tree when it comes to getting something fixed right. Spend thousands on the kids and wife and wear the same overalls for years. You would think they are dead busted but hard times turn them to being tight with money repairs. Run them into the ground and then buy another tractor or a couple thousand a month payments till it seems like no way out. Good try at saving the man money and thats all you can do

OMG i farmed for a gentleman helping to do corn and beans hear in PA for a good 15 years and he got that same tractor for me to run and only me. it was not fast but dang that thing would pull the guts out of any tractor in 4 county's at the time. now i am talking back in the 90es. i tryed to get the tractor off of him several times and he just would not sell. i think he finally rolled it being stupid and it burnt to the ground laying on it's back in a field.
Yeah but there's not much in the way of humility. Its actually the middle of winter here and its 30c / 80f + during the day. You learn pretty quickly not to leave spanners and other tools in full sun. You literally can't pick them up.

Anyway, not that you need my help, but if you ever need to drive into some soft area with your truck, I remember the crews when I worked at the power company said they'll put out plywood to drive over to keep the trucks from sinking in. Bit of a pain if you ask me though, especially for one guy... And then you've gotta keep the plywood on hand.
I have never understood how they expect Air Conditioning to work properly on a farm tractor. The dusty conditions they are in everyday makes it impossible for conditioned air to work properly. Hopefully the newer model tractors have figured something out and made maintenance easier and more efficient .

Have you "Warren" ever thought of a ladder called a ATTIC ladder to assist in getting to the top of so equipment? the reason they call it an ATTIC ladder is it fits in a 18 inch hole and folds to 3" x 8' . you can strap it to the boom out of the way.
Unless you clean the condenser which is typically in front of the radiator the A/C will not work right. I have 25 years as a commercial and industrial HVAC/R tech. On a service call of no cooling, cleaning the condenser is always the first thing you do otherwise your pressures and temps won't be right.
took a couple mates out past st george hunting one time, told em to be careful as there was a big patch of it thu the national forest. all i heard was: WTF is this!" over the uhf. haha
Are you aware that you can run electronics duster spray, which is actually a registered refrigerant (R152A) in an old R12 system? Yup, if you read the fine print on the can it reveals the contents are 152A although the last 4 pack I bought from wally world I couldn't find the reference to 152 on the cans. I am running it in my '85 Ford van and it makes nice cold air. Probably not as cold as R12 but the stuff is dirt cheap and obviously environmentally friendly because it is made to be sprayed directly into the air. At four cans for about $14.00 it beats the heck out of the cost and nasty high pressures of 134 in a tired old system. There are some videos on youtube about it. You buy a readily available can connector which allows you to run the stuff into your gauges and system.
About the same kinda cold in Ontario. Warren, how come you don't order another socket clip for your Milwaukee driver? Seems you're always needing to hold on to the sockets. Guess once you get used to it? Another good one.
"Over charged on oil" - yes, people add what they think is the correct amount of oil to the compressor but don't take into consideration the oil that is already in the lines which gets carried around by the refrigerant.

You add nitrogen to pressure up and look for leak.

I've used a wire brush on those rads then blown them out. That seems to work quite well.

Dude we get that weather in Oregon, but Its Eastern Oregon. Last year we had 32 days and nights straight aboce 100, averaging at 115-120.

Warren, the amount of dust you blew from that evaperator equates to what we call bulldust here in Oz

Is there any kind of cabin air filter for the a/c in the tractor? That might be just as stopped up as the coils.

I was taught that car A/C just can't cope with open windows.The whole idea was to chill a fixed volume of air, not blow cold air into the sky.

Reminds of Gpa's old farm truck. Every year he would recharge the system with propane.

I worked on those for years what a POS. The only good thing I can say about those damn things is the hoods make good dog houses.

Would a strip of that foam gasket tape you can get from Home Depot or whatnot around the outside edges of that panel help keep the dust down or no?
