Cubitos is alot of fun! Great breakdown on the push your luck and short cut mechanics 😊 we had a blast playing this game. Reminds me of Quacks on a racetrack, in the best possible way 😉
So happy I was able to pick this up. It's the only racing games I own and the theme is really cool. Also it reminded me so much of Quacks that even though I'm not a fan of racing games I had to pick it up :)
I think it's fascinating how John uses a very similar "push your luck" system in Mystic Vale, wherein you bust if you have 3 decay revealed and then draw a fourth. However, the luck element is much stronger here, since you always have a chance with dice. Seems like a game with massive amounts of relatability. It's definitely on my shortlist, but I think I need a non-violent co-op game in my collection first to cleanse my fiance's pallet since most games we play are competitive. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Cubitos! I'm looking forward to playing it. :)
Love this game, it delivers "fun" for us. I enjoy push your luck when it is put in a game and works as well as this. There are such great moments when the decision and outcome of pushing result in crossing the finish line in victory, or the agony of blowing the push and watching someone else fly past you. We love egging each other on to push (or not) when the time feels right. I think the silly theme in this game was also a fantastic choice by the publishing team. Good stuff.
I want this game so badly.
Played this with my family last week and we’re already planning another game of it soon. I was far behind on the last turn where the leader was only one space from the finish line and was able to spend coins to gain the final space to cross the finish line.
I had forgotten about that option and it led to a tie, where I won on the tie breaking turn by moving further than my opponent. Crazy finish to a really fun game.
Cubitos has nearly perfected push-your-luck by combining it with racing and a catch-up track that gives you semi-permanent/permanent benefits when busting. I love that there are several places on the maps that give you bonuses, so if you got more feet than dice one round where you couldn’t buy a dice you want, maybe you could reach some other bonus instead. It just works so well.
My biggest frustration with the game is there are no way to track temporary coins or feet. If you have a die that says “gain 3 coins then lose this die”, you have to gain the coins in the first part of the run phase, but not use it until several steps later and there’s no temporary coins to gain to remember. Same with feet. Some allow you to “gain 2 feet” but do you move then, or move when actually running? We chose the latter that made the most sense, but how do you temporarily track how many feet you have?
Those are kind of nit-picky things to an otherwise overall very fun push-your-luck game that we happily put to the table often.
I love this game!
absolutely love this game, though everytime ive played it i lose by a lot haha i cant ever seem to get past the halfway point in the maps
Sir, I have to tell you right now that I received my CE of Red Rising last night. It is an amazing CE and game! Wonderful card stock, beautiful art and nice, weighted pieces. I can't wait to play it with my niece this weekend! Thanks for everything you do.
P.S. The Steam version of Wingspan is nothing short of amazing. Great game. Scythe is next on my list.
Hello Mr.Stegmaier,
I'm working on a tabletop wargame and would really love some advice and help with some of the problems I'm running into regarding mechanics. So far I've based the game on warhammer 40k rules but am trying to create something with a less harsh learning curve. Do you have a bussiness email I could contact you at?.
Thank you
Have a great day
Have you tried Steampunk Rally/ Fusion? Some of the racing mechanics you mention at the beginning of this video remind me of it. Fun racing and literal engine building game.
I've played the original but not the sequel. I need to try Fusion! :)
@@jameystegmaier What do you think about Steampunk? Been struggling to decide between Steampunk, Cubitos and Downforce! I like that Steampunk plays up to 8 players and it's simultaneous action (less downtime), but that's about it. What do you think? Which one do you like more?
Just realized Cubitos is also Simultaneous as well! Might just split a group of 8 players to 4 and 4 to play Quacks and Cubitos hahaha.
@@JR-zc9vq I could see all three games being great for the right person! They each feel very different to me. I think Downforce is the lightest of the bunch (but the easiest to teach), I like the push-your-luck and dice building aspect of Cubitos, and Steampunk has a satisfying engine building aspect to it too.
Does this feel different enough from Quacks and Quest for El Dorado? Seems like the perfect Venn diagram between the two but I already own both. I love Quacks but I’m lukewarm on El Dorado.
It is indeed a Venn diagram between the two. If you love Quacks, I think you'll enjoy Cubitos.
Have you played clank!? It feels like quacks with the movement of clank! And yes it does feel different from quacks, mostly in the nature of how the dice behave. In cubitos you roll the dice and hope it lands on the side you need it too. And some dice, like the green one, allows you ability to re roll dice. Also there are more built in combos and crazy powers in cubitos.
I happily own and love both!
@@lorenzohot5234 I'm not sure if you're asking Kyle or me, but I've played Clank many many times--it's one of my favorites. :)
Hey Jamey, off-game question, i noticed that your videos usually don't have ads, but have started to lately. Is this a choice on your side? I only ask because I noticed ads put on my videos, and i wanted them off haha 😊
Thanks!! 😁👍
My videos have ads? That's very odd--I've never turned on monetization. I'll look into the settings to see if CZcams changed something without telling me.
I just confirmed that I don't have monetization activated (and never have). Are you saying that when you watch my videos, the videos pause on occasion to show an ad? Has anyone else seen this?
@@jameystegmaier Yeah, I noticed that your channel has always had ads off until recently (mine as well). I also turn monetization off. Then, lately both mine and yours have had ads. I can screenshot this video on mobile for my experience. I'd be interested to see if this has happened to others. imgur.com/a/R0yZoqB
@@jameystegmaier It's a preroll ad, i think? It happens before the video. Never used to happen. Maybe first time within the last month?
@@ClaudeAndTaylor Huh, that's very odd. I can't seem to replicate it on my end.
