mee too
MJ wasn't on tour. He (and Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie) organized the whole thing but he DID record parts of this by himself to lay down the background track before the other artists showed up to do some rehearsal and record the finished video.
Ooh
When the camera pans out, you can clearly see him in the same studio with everyone holding hands with Diana Ross. No one was on tour during this recording.
Yeah I just saw the amazing documentary about this. MJ recorded his bit before everyone got there. All the others came straight from the awards show, MJ didn't attend the awards because there's too much work to be done. This was MJ and Lionel Ritchie's song so they were the main organizers.
Nothing but absolute LEGENDS in this song.
Right!
Except for the scam artist Dionne Warwick.
@@snowflakehunter Why is that did she fake her woice or something?
@@skaraturbo She was involved in The Psycic Friends Network. Warwick's was a part in the business of getting poor and desolate people to shell out enormous amounts of money they really shouldn't be spending for worthless advice. She and the rest just tell lies for money.
Plus Dan Akroyd.
The artists were all greeted by a sign saying "Check your egos at the door" and they did. There are several fantastic singers in the chorus who don't even have solos: Harry Belafonte, Lindsay Buckingham, LaToya Jackson, Bette Midler...incredible.
So loveky
wtf bla bla bla
Did you mention LaToya? LOL.
And Randy Jackson next to LaToya. Also, the Pointer Sisters, Sheila E. (who seems not to know the lyrics, lol), and Jeffrey Osborne.
SNL did a great sketch at the time with Eddie Murphy as Prince singing a solo entitled "I Am Also The World" 😂
It makes me smile to know that the wonderful Ray Charles can now see.
💖
They actually sang their part in their own style and worked perfectly!!!
So true!
This was recorded back then and it STILL brings me to tears of joy. So I can't for the life of me understand how people can "listen to/watch this in our present days (which are worse) and not be brought to tears themselves.
It’s very beautiful 💖
With all the well known music stars who took part in this, few people notice a very young Dan Aykroyd singing in the back row. He was there by accident and they asked him to join. He'd sold a few million albums as a musician with the Blues Brothers, so decided to go for it.
Oooh
It was all started in the UK by Bob Geldolf , he wanted to help the starving people. The song Do They Know It's Christmas ( and the artists he gathered together ) was what inspired We Are The World .
Oooh! Great to add to Christmas reactions
@@MaddyReactions yeah defo to early to do it now tho lool its a great christmas song tho

Maddy, you definitely need to give a shout out to this.
@@MattJocks I think you were referring to James Ingram but yes I agree powerful performance by everyone ❤️
@@pamelaesparza1586 I'm always getting Ingram and Osborn mixed up. I was going on the time stamp Glenn had with Ingram listed in the opening minute.
Impossible to pick a favorite voice, love them all. I realized that's Andrea Bocelli in the background when Huey, Cindy and Kim are at the microphone. The chorus had many heavy hitter artists in it as well. The song is a reminder that we're better together 🇺🇸 🌎 ❤️.
Oh wow!
@@MaddyReactions I wonder if most know that's Quincy Jones directing/orchestrating....also Father of the very talented Rashida Jones. 🤔
@MaddyReactions Oh, I may have been mistaken about Andrea Bocelli being there, sorry. Amazing song though, thanks for the reaction video.
LOL. Sorry but there was no Andrea Bocelli. All the vocals you hear from all the artists in that studio. There is a behind the scenes documentary here on YT that I encourage you to watch.
@dunhill1 Yep, I realized that and commented my retraction (woops) 😌. Fantastic song 🎵!
This was a special moment in time that can never be replicated. It’s timeless. This was the beginning of end of a golden era. Grand reaction. Thank you!!!!!!
So true! 💖
I have loved watching this so many times, and seeing the legends l grew up with. Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Huey Lewis, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, and Kenny Rogers and so many other amazing artists.
Amazing
This is such an iconic moment in American music history that i feel got lost. Our children need to hear this song and realize the importance of it and spread the sharing. I do agree that this should happen again. Skip you are amazing for requesting this song!! We need more people just like you my friend!!
So true
Dionne Warwick saw this coming...lol! Scamming bitch she is!
It might sound corny to say but this truly was a monumental event at the time. It was amazing to see all these major artists performing together. The song was on the radio all day. I bought the single and just loved to watch the video on MTV (when they actually used to show videos).
@pjg58x nothing corny about it!!! It was a complete different world back then.
The song “We Are the World” was recorded on January 28, 1985 by the supergroup USA for Africa and released on March 7, 1985. The song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian. The single was a charity effort to raise money and awareness for famine victims in Africa and sold over 800,000 copies in its first three days, eventually raising more than $60 million
6:55 You could fit all of today's best singers in a phone booth.
😯
A great idea would be to do one reaction to a song from each of these soloists. It would keep you busy and be a huge education for all of us.
Very cool
Nope, they didn't record MJ seperately. This was all recorded in one evening after the Grammy Awards. They had a sign at the door saying "Leave your egos at the door." MJ and Lionel Richie wrote the song, I think they wrote it that evening, but I could be wrong.
There's a 1 hour special documentary about the making of the song.
I only just watched it a couple days ago, and it's really interesting.
These artists spent the entire night recording, as you said, right after the Grammys, till about 10 or 11 am.
There was another one done for the earthquake in Haiti in 2010
(We Are the World 25 for Haiti).
But in my opinion nowhere near as good as this.
Oh, how cool!
MJ came before all the others that night from the American Music awards event, and then he recorded his own part alone indeed.
MJ was not in the mix of this fantastic group of performers.
@@boomer63Yes he was, he was there before everyone recording and he stayed there with the rest. At one point you can see him standing next to Diana Ross, she is between him and Stevie Wonder holding their hands
They recorded the song for sale in order to make enough money for food for the people who were starving in Africa ❤
There is a documentary on Netflix about this. It identifies who paired them. Initially, they asked why they were paired but then Stevie played the piano with everyone going through it as paired and after a few, as Stevie heard it he commented on how good it was. Others also realized it. It was done in one night except for Stevie and Ray were asked to come back in a few days later to do a fill in where the producers/directors thought it was needed.
Michael Jackson was in the studio with them all. They were all together in one room
Lovely
This would never been possible nowdays where everyone is greedy! Love this!
So true
besides, how many auto-tune programs would they need for a modern day version of this.
This was inspired by a collection of British stars doing a song called Do They Know It's Christmas to raise money for African famine relief. You should definitely check that out -- but do the version from the Live Aid concert. A ton of huge stars (most of which weren't on the original) and a stadium full of people losing their minds. It will shake you.
YES.
And don’t forget that the heavy metal singers got together under the name Hear N Aid and made the song Stars. Doesn’t focus on the singing as much, but the guitar solo is incredible.
"by a collection of British" & Irish. Bob Geldof, who's idea it was & co-wrote the song, Irish. Bono, Irish. Geldof's band Boomtown Rats, Irish
Thanks, Maddy! you should check out the full list.. my favorites are Ray Charles, the combo with Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen, and honorable mention to Cyndi! appreciate your reaction!
Oooh 🤗🤗💖
Exactly my choice 😊
@@brendanpelly213 Great minds, Brendan! :)
Bruce killed it
Cyndi Lauper killed that lol.
Yesss
Second time today I've watched a young reactor to this video. I actually posted it to my FB as well. Happiness in remembrance of this song and sadness, because many of these artists have passed - MJ, Kenny Rogers, Harry Belafonte, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick...just greatness! Oh, and having the great Quincy Jones as the director...perfection!!
💖💖💖
The best collab in music history ever!
100%
Maddy, this will never happen again because there are no more singers left. Music died in the late 90´s. Autotune rules. RIP music and talent
I know I feel bad for my kids and their friends. It really died after the rock bands of the 70's and early 80's. After them it became corporate.
This is 1985, but THERE IS a "new" version of this: WE ARE THE WORLD 25 for Haiti (from 2010).
💖
That version is ****
LEGENDS, all of them! Timeless! Beautiful gifts to the world!
🤍 so true!
Dionne Warwick is only a legend at scamming people!
There will never be this much talent in one room again. Ever.
😯
Well maybe at the Grammys, but they won't be singing together...
@@taniaquesada-vargas4013 Those auto tune, lipsyncing posers? Not one of them have the talent that these kids have in their baby fingers.
Oh wow, this is from my childhood. THIS is the world I grew up seeing, natural diversity and people trying to work through their differences rather than focusing on ONLY those. And this was SUCH an amazing thing for them to do, if memory serves they managed to help a lot of people using this song in part. So amazing! Thank you for reacting, I love that more and more young people are looking at things like this that promote real peace. New sub for sure, look forward to more videos! :D

This was an awesome collaboration with everyone involved. That era had some awesome songs like this starting with Bandaid. The best was attending Live Aide Philadelphia on 7/13/85
Which. To this date is the best concert I was ever at.
I am so happy you did this Maddy. Great reaction ❤
Hearing Band-Aid, Live-Aid and this song when I was in high school, shook the world!!! The 80's was a special time
Thank you so much ❤
This was recorded in 1985 yet it still has its powerfull echos more than 3 decades later and may be forever.
No additions, everyone was in the same room making this magic happen.
Oooh
I'm not sure how much they considered each other competitors, if at all, since a lot of them were from entirely different genres. :)
True!
Pretty surprised, that such a young girl knows so many old Stars! Appreciate!
💖🤗
Hey Maddy. Your absolutely right about having legends like these in a room and singing for a wonderful cause. Hopefully it’ll happen again. Keep up the great work. Big Aroha (love) from New Zealand 🇳🇿👍
This is like 25 to 30 years old. Still touches hearts.
39 years old !
Magnifico, extraordinario, explendoroso que video incrivel você fez parabéns, e eu vendo aqui em 2024 depois do documentario.
If we got best singers of today in room, would be many of the people in this video still alive who can actually (still) sing. Not sure could find as many today
So true
If you took English class I might be able to understand you.
Michael Jackson was there. Some of this was recorded the next day. Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder's duet were recorded separately. Bruce recorded his they night most of this was recorded but Stevie came in the next day to do his part. This was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie. When Ray Charles asked where the bathroom was, Stevie Wonder said, "I'll show you Ray." And the cast and crew watched a real life case of the blind leading the blind.
💖💖💖
My favorite parts of this song when I was a kid were Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder. Such a great song ❤

@@MaddyReactions read your comments before nonsensically replying with an emoji or "wow" "I agree" its disrespectful for your viewers and it makes it look like your replying in a hurry and dont give a damn.
Instant iconic event, the "world premiere" on MTV was as big or bigger as like a "Superbowl" halftime. To have Michael Jackson and Bob Dylan in the same room, that big. Huge when it happened
Unfortunetly more than half of the artists are gone now. Micheal Jackson thought up the idea and contacted Lionel Richie who wrote the song with him. Quincy Jones produced it. Artists were gathered for an awards show and agreed to join in. They started around midnight and finished around 5am. Prince was asked but refused due to his feeling like MJ's underling. No one was paid. It ran on radio stations regulary for years. MTV and VH1 also kept it in rotation. Sales of the record raised hundreds of millions wourldwide.
So sad
Only a few passed away, over exaggeration
This song was recorded in one night starting after the American music wars, knowing that everyone was gonna be in Los Angeles and the final cut of the song was done by 8 am the next day recorded on January 28, 1985
They hid Cyndi from view til it was her time to come forward and she step out of Huey Lewis' shadow like a fearless lioness and let it rip. And for those who don't know who I am talking about, she the woman with the multi coloured mane
Lol yes!!

It’s Sweet the song never Gets old
Windows 95 vibes from a 1985 video. It was ahead of its time.

Comment Number 150. Complete credits are in Wikipedia. All-stars 🌟 Madonna was not invited. The powers that be thought she was not good enough. This information was in an interview with Nile Rodgers. He did not perform either. But they performed at Live Aid.
Sammy Hagar wanted to sing but was not invited. His Bay Area friends Lindsey Buckingham, Huey Lewis and Steve Perry sang.
David Foster conducted a supergroup in Canada 🇨🇦. Bruce Allen took care of the business side. This group was named Northern Lights. Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, Geddy Lee of Rush, the late Gordon Lightfoot, RIP, Joni Mitchell, Anne Murray,Mike Reno of Loverboy and Neil Young are some of the singers.
Suggested video 📹: Northern Lights perform Tears Are Not Enough.
Oh wow
I saw the Netflix special on the BTS for We Are the World. I highly recommend it. I don't know how they managed to make this song. They had sixty artists for the chorus. It was like herding cats. Quincy put up a sign up, "Check your Ego at the door", so no assistants or entourages allowed in the studio, only artists. It kinda disarmed them. They had to talk to each other and some looked uncomfortable but it helped focus them. Stevie Wonder almost broke the thing by trying to sing in Swahili. Lots of people were rolling their eyes and things were getting tense. Bob Geldof had to intervene and explain to Stevie that in Ethiopia they don't speak Swahili, and this was just the chorus, they still had to record the solos. It was an amazing achievement, kudos to Quincy, Lionel, and Michael Jackson for getting it done.
There was another event the following year when Ken Kragen, who helped put this event together, did Hands Across America which was not only a multi-artist song aimed at homelessness and hunger, but an event where millions of people tried to create a human chain from coast to coast.
Oh wow!
Absolutely ❤❤❤❤
I remember when this came out in 84/85. I was in 5/6th grade in a small town in Mississippi. I loved it then and still love it to this day.

Estos artistas son calidad y cantan con el corazón ❤️
Iconic people are all on here❤
When they made this there was a lot of tension. Singers wanting more mic time etc. Bruce Springsteen spoke up and said "I'm here to save lives and feed people!" After that everyone calmed down and gave it thier all. Thats why Bruce is called the Boss.
My youth , a true lovely song with so many famous people of my teenage time. Historic song.
Lovely
the problem is now there's no way there's that many talented singers to do it again today
I feel like if we look, we can find mthem!
@@MaddyReactions yeah maybe but it wouldn't be to this standard these are actual legends from all different types of music. the saddest thing about songs like this and Do they Know it's Christmas ~ Band Aid is they were nearly 40 years ago and the worlds still fudged up
There are certainly that many and more. You just won't find them on your local radio station. There are incredible vocal talents out there today but you have to know where to look because they are often not as mainstream.
are you sure? come here in philippines 😂
I think your missing my point this was a charity song made by legendary artists recognised the world over there's no way there's even half the amount of artists at this level today
What a powerful song, even now 35 years later. I remember when this came out and the world (at least, my known world) seemed to soften a bit. It didn't last long, but the message this song brought still lingers in the background and brings hope that we can ALL eventually come together for the betterment of everyone on this small spinning rock in the vast universe.
Wyclef and Jamie Foxx did a remake about a decade ago to raise money for Haiti.
Oh awesome!
Michael was there. They all came together after an awards show. There is a video of making of this video it was great to watch.
Actually, this has happened since then; after the earthquake in Haiti, a new group of superstars united to record the song to aide Haiti's recovery. Artists included Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Miley Cyrus and Justin Beiber. It also included an all star list of legendary rappers, who rapped a new addition to the song. It wasn't as good, but it was still amazing to see all the stars in it. Broadway performers also united to sing their own version to promote unity (it might have been after the Pulse nightclub shootings). There have also been a few different songs recorded by all star artists for different charities since then (there was one with famous Latino singers), but they weren't quite as huge or as successful.
On the same album as the original We Are the World was a group of Canadian superstars calling themselves the Northern Lights singing a similar themed song called Tears Are Not Enough.
Crazy song...Crazy singers,, tanhks maddy..
Anyone who does not recognize this artist needs an immediate intervention to discover each one of these artists separately.

Lol love it!
They tried to do this almost 20 years later, to help Haiti. It wasn't as well received and the Money raised dried up (by "Operating Costs" , Exec's Salaries and the Politicians on Both Sides) before it helped one person.
Oh wow
Amazing song 😊😊 it's makes me cry 😢
So sweet 💖
We were doing better back then when it came to coming together more. There were problems, for sure. No doubt about it. But we were making much more progress than previous generations. Big strides were happening. Progress was increasing. Then something arrived and began to trash that progress that was made. Millennials and zoomers. They stoked fire and told groups that other groups hated them. Resentment grew where it was lessening. It’s now going to take generations just to get back to where we were during the time of this song. It’s heartbreaking to witness when you lived during the time of great improvement.
not because he was on the tour. As you know, MJ wrote this song with Lionel Richie, meaning he had many things to do. (writing song, recording demo, choosing the parts, etc) he recorded that part first before the other singers came. because they had only a night for recording.
so he and Lionel Richie were busy teaching the songs to other singers. you can even find a vid of his recording and his demo and making of that recording session
There are 3 other times I know artists got together for 1 song , another we are the world done for Haiti. There is a Christmas song done by all UK artists I forgot the name. And a country song called forever country with the artist labeled as then ,now ,and forever.

Maddy, what's so ironic about it? This project raised a huge amount of money for various African countries that were experiencing famine at the time. It saved a lot of lives! 🙂

It helped at the time. They accomplished what they were trying to do with the video. And many parts of Africa are doing fine, and the world in general is doing great.
There's an epidemic of pessimism going around right now but it's irrational. If you ignore maga being stupid, the USA, at least, is doing pretty good. 🙂
This was done without auto tune because ever singer had talent and could actually sing that good
