      Yes there is a disease in this country called Musical Ignorance. I was a music teacher I should know. Whether it's classical music, country, pop, rock or jazz. The underfunding of the arts, regardless of the internet, is a major cause. You'll never see a weed gropwing in a High School Football stadium but music will always be cut first. Reactors inaccuratetly guessing when they have the information at their fingertips on the internet. But those who want to learn are the ones like Sarah. i have seen reactors grow over three years from not knowing anyone/anything to an amazing change in their lives musically, beyond the cocoon they were musically living in. A miracle in that regard. Sarah came to this already with some smarts, she's tops.

      I would point out that while Waylon Jennings did sing on the record, he is NOT in the mv. He had a fight with Quincy Jones when Quincy had the choir sing in Swahili. "Well, ain't no good ol' boy ever sung in Swahili. I think I'm outta here." The biggest crime, though, was that Aretha Franklin wasn't asked to sing. No excuse.

    • @cydrych
      @cydrych Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@jamesrawlins735it’s a good thing he did too because the inclusion of Swahili would have been silly on multiple levels since none of the countries that were receiving aid from the proceeds of the song speak Swahili and it could have hurt sales. Waylon walking out was probably the best thing because others spoke up about not wanting that either. As for that quote, it’s disputed by multiple sources.

    Someone else here might have already noted this, but it's well worth pointing out the idea for this fundraising song came from the legendary Harry Belafonte. He got Michael and Lionel to get the singers together... his role has been largely forgotten, and he took his humility to another level by relegating himself to back row chorus, even though he'd been a huge star before many of the others were ever heard of... great job, Sarah, as always, and thank you!

    It was Harry Belafonte, singer and activist, who came up with this idea. In 1984 British and Irish musicians put out the single Do They Know It’s Christmas? to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia. He felt the top stars in America should be helping too. He pitched the idea the right people, got Lionel Ritchie and Quincy Jones on board, and the rest is history. Lionel and Michael wrote the song. There’s a great video on CZcams about the making of We Are The World❤️

    According to Billboard with Turner’s death, just one month after the death of musician and activist Harry Belafonte - who was the main driving force behind “We Are the World” - 10 of the singers on the smash have passed on. The first to die was Waylon Jennings in 2002, followed by Ray Charles in 2004 and June Pointer of The Pointer Sisters in 2006.
    Michael Jackson, who co-wrote the song with Lionel Richie and was featured on the recording, died in 2009, followed by Al Jarreau in 2017, James Ingram in 2019 and Kenny Rogers in 2020. Rogers was managed in his 1980s heyday by Ken Kragen, who Belafonte enlisted to bring the vision to life. Kragen died in 2021.
    Anita Pointer of The Pointer Sisters died in December 2022, followed by Belafonte on April 25, and now Turner.

    Answering your question on how they got all these people together in one place, they recorded it immediately after the American Music Awards (hosted by Lionel Richie) that year, so they were all mostly going to be in the same place anyway, so after the awards show, they headed to a studio in Los Angeles and recorded the song (which was written in advance by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and arranged by Quincy Jones).

    So the person directing is Quincy Jones. He put this together. The recording session happened right after the Grammy award show got over in LA. THAT is how they were all together. My favorite story about the session is Ray Charles saying..."I really have to use the restroom." Stevie Wonder grabbed him by the arm and said..."I will show you were it is.".....LITERALLY the blind leading the blind.

    We Are the World" opens with Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner, and Billy Joel singing the first verse.[Michael Jackson and Diana Ross follow, completing the first chorus together.Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, and Al Jarreau sing the second verse, before Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, and Daryl Hall go through the second chorus. Co-writer Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, and Kim Carnes follow with the song's bridge.This structuring of the song is said to "create a sense of continuous surprise and emotional buildup".
