Go Square for Power Punching

A great way to increase your power punching is to square your boxing stance. As always though, there is a trade off when you go for power.
Making your stance square allows you to drive lots of power in your hooks and uppercuts.
However, this is not a stance to go with at long range.
The trade off is that with a square stance you are less mobile, less able to use explosive footwork to shift position.
Another aspect of this is the willingness to switch southpaw to orthodox and back again.
To that end there is an additional boxing footwork drill to help you develop that ability.
So go for this power punching alternative at close and mid range, not at long range.
    Cheers
    Fran

I literally learned something from this video that I never learned during my 15 years of doing boxing on an amateur level, and that is how to change the stance for power for an uppercut by squaring up as he did. Just by trying it once, I noticed I generated ton more power

During my study and training i have come to realise the importance of both stances.
You will never know what position you will end up during a fight.

I've commented on some of your other videos the differences in my experience in Taekwondo, and your experience in boxing. In this video, your footwork looks a lot more like what I'm used to for the traditional Taekwondo footwork. Wider stances, using steps to switch lead sides, and using the motion of the step to apply acceleration into the punch.
This is what I love about using the internet to discuss martial arts. You get to see the differences between your art and another, and appreciate the passion and work that goes into each. But you also get to appreciate the similarities and find the common ground between you.
Your videos are excellent. I've been binge-watching them all week since someone pointed me to your channel. Keep up the great work!

Hey Coach! Thanks for making this video! Boxer of about 2 weeks now, and I started my journey with your videos. Before seeing this one, switching my stance and having it squared up close felt pretty intuitive. Glad I wasn't wrong by doing this!

  • @TonyqTNT
    @TonyqTNT Před 4 lety +7

The conventional boxing stance provides greater mobility in all directions but especially in forward and rearward in and out actions.
The more squared stance is favored by mma practitioners and self protection combatives exponents because it's more conducive to combat without parameters of allowable technique and therefore is appropriate for grappling as well as striking. The more squared stance is more limited in forward and rearward positional motion but can be conducive to circular and lateral footwork driven body positional motion.

These tips are so solid. I have only been boxing a short time but have used my boxing coach almost exclusively in my development. I have a coach at the gym I go to, on Mondays and Saturday, but continue to employee Fran’s lessons and drills during the weekdays. My local coach has been impressed with my improvement in such a short time..he has never once contradicted any of the new tactics. I have surprised his quite a few times while sparring and have heard “where did you learn that”?? Often. Fran is as good as they get...so yourself a favor and watch his “5 favorite online boxing channels” all are great. But I’m sticking with Fran!

Mobility isn't sacrificed when squaring up if you become more Lateral with your (head and footwork) movement instead. Squaring up is the best stand for said Lateral (head and footwork) movement.

When I started boxing, the trainers are always correcting my stance because I use this squared stance. But, since I am a beginner, I followed their instructions. But then the owner of the gym arrived and became my coach, he was only one that made me do this stance. I was very thankful because my punches became more powerful. It's kinda disappointing that most trainers think of this squared stance as a 'beginner mistake' or something like that.
