Versatility is absolutely critical in boxing, and in this boxing footwork drill video I provide you with the most versatility of boxing skills - the pivot.
In fact, this boxing footwork drill demonstrates absolutely how versatile the pivot is by using it in both offensive and defensive situations.
So the boxing footwork drill itself breaks down into 3 sections - each of these sections can form a round.
As with any boxing footwork drills that involve some level of complexity, this is about joining boxing skills together, or overlapping those boxing skills, to form a complete passage.
It is very important therefore that each of the boxing skills is performed to the very highest of standards.
Any errors in the execution of a single boxing skill, allowing any faults to creep in, will result in the next skill being negatively impacted.
So, make sure that you slow things right down.
    Round 1
Movement forward and backwards incorporating the pivot
    Round 2
Jab then movement forwards and backwards followed by the pivot
    Round 3
Jab then movement forwards and backwards followed by the pivot with a shot.
Execute slowly and deliberately. Get it right and this will bring good benefits into your wider boxing training; your shadow boxing, your heavy bag work and of course your sparring and fights.
Alongside the boxing footwork drill I answer a couple of questions that have been posed in the comments sections of my CZcams channel or my blog.
    1. In respect of boxing footwork, why should my lead foot be at an angle rather than pointing towards my opponent.
    2. Boxing and self-defence, how it might help and why you should not ask me about it.
I also provide a little bit of advice that I feel it important to share in by role as a boxing coach...maybe a little reality check about shortcuts.
    Cheers
    Fran

When pivoting people tend to get off balance and stumble a bit one trick that i learned is to lower my level slightly as i pivot almost like ducking this lowers my center of gravity and gives me great stability.

Good advice coach - my only comment regarding whether the stance applies to self defence is typically when practicing self defence techniques, both parties begin in the casual front on stance, square on (basically standing normally) and not from a fighting stance, sideways on. Main reason for this is because as soon as you adopt a fighting stance, it lets the opponent know that you are experienced and thus you give away your advantage and it becomes a fight situation with both parties in a fighting stance.

  • @ph5288
    @ph5288 Před 2 lety

Regarding the front foot facing forward, I have trained muay thai and boxing, my natural inclination is to have my front foot at a 45 degree angle and to pivot my foot in when throwing a jab, however my muay thai coach has advised me to keep it facing forward/straight, especially when throwing a jab, the reason is that it's a lot easier to follow up a jab with a kick if your foot is facing straight, as opposed to it pivoting inwards from a 45 degree angle.

You are so knowledgeable! I have been practicing martial arts for 20 years and I have learned something new on pivoting from your video today. Separately, as an MMA fighter, I really appreciate your note on self-defense at the end. I have personally benefited from boxing training and I think boxing is one of the best martial arts to practice for supplementing self-defense training, but I often see overconfident boxing or MMA coaches claim their respective sport as the best tool for self-defense. MMA and boxing are combat sports that take place in a controlled environment with finite resources. Street combat is infinitely varied. That you recognize this shows how excellent of a coach you are. Thanks for the videos!

Im learning this technique in the gym, and I am getting shown the technique in a way there you combine the pivot with a step when throwing the hook, which is really hard to do. I think this is something that will fall into place after repetition, because one move is the step, then the hook contacts, then a step back out of range , then come back in with the cross.
My coach showed me the whole thing, which I could not execute. But in my own time I broke the whole mechanics down, kept practicing stepping with the lead hook, then the second step with the back foot to throw the cross. I currently have a bit of a bottlekneck between my pivot hook following a cross. After the pivot there is a slow in momentum when you have to cange to throw the cross. But from repeating this movement over and over I have gotten a bit faster. Reptition is king, but I can honestly say this has been the hardest technique to improve at. I also noticed doing rounds that include a pivot hooke seem to gas me a lot more, probably because I am not efficient at the movement yet. but yet again, great content fran, I'm always learning, I'm an obesionist at anything I do and boxing is one of them. Rant over. Thanks FRAN!!

The power from the lead hook is not just a pivot, for a power hook you need to step with it. just like a power jab, the power comes from the feet (or step) , but step with an angles that will automatically make you pivot. Which puts yous in the perfect position to continue your attack to your opponents blindside Would you agree @Fran Sands?

My question is about tips for strengthening the back hand. I am right handed but feel more comfortable in southpaw stance. In orthodox both my hands feel weak. In southpaw my jab/right hand feels great but my rear (left) hand feels weak, nothing like what a back hand should be.
Recently I improved my general punching strength by working hard on extending fully, putting a ring around punch bag that I could not step into - forcing me to consistently extend fully. This has helped somewhat, but do you have any more tips for strengthening back hand? especially when it is the weaker hand?

Doing the drill, instead of doing back-left, back-right, front-left, front-right, could you do back-left, front-left, back-right, front-right? With the way you're doing it, there's 2 steps to reset after each piece of the drill, whereas re-arranged it would be 1 step to reset.
(I have no boxing experience, but my work is easier when I find the most efficient way to process things).

When in the inside of an orthodox (two right handed boxers) when you pivot to the right, do you drag your front foot a little? To get around the front foot/leg of the opponent? I see Mike Tyson, and he does a small ‘skip’. I teach my kids to pivot and drag (when going to the right). When the back leg pivots, it holds the most body weight. Then countering with a right hand.
So this is was I teach. May be wrong. May be right. Any thoughts on this?

No offence taken at all. We all have different ways. Coach Tom is a top guy, I have nothing but respect. That kid turned his foot much more than 45 degrees. So, for me, if it goes straight it leads to over-balance when throwing the back hand. 45 degrees offers the most stability. But that's just me :-)

@@Brucelee-pv6uf Well thank you. Yes, I could certainly live with 1 o'clock I suppose. Definitely not 12 o'clock. My view is 2 o'clock, so maybe splitting hairs a bit. But again, if we all coached in the same way it would be a bit of a boring World 😉

About self defense : you're more likely to break your hand when you have good boxing skills. Never hurt myself when I didn't knew boxing in street beefs before hahah

This is basic. If you fight both sides, it is way better...you can pivot back.
