By downplaying the risks and estimating that it will make landfall as a Category 1, the public is misinformed. Anyone with meteorological experience or knowledge can clearly see that it will make landfall as at least a Category 2, with strengthening occurring just before landfall, making it too late for people to evacuate. I understand the desire to avoid causing panic and the caution exercised after mass evacuations during Hurricane Rita claimed lives and caused mass hysteria. However, we know that storms are becoming less predictable and stronger, and this is not the time to save face. Downplaying the storm's intensity means fewer people will evacuate, leading to more suffering. It is crucial for local news stations to provide accurate information to ensure public safety.
