The Unlucky Downfall of Instalok

- Instalok’s League of Legends parody music videos catapulted the group to internet stardom, allowing the founding trio of Chris, Tony, and Patrick to follow their dreams and make a living producing music for the game they loved. But we all know their dreams were short-lived, with the band disbanding and fading into obscurity in only a few short years.
What exactly went wrong with Instalok? And what are the members up to nowadays? Welcome to LoLAthlete. This is the Rise and Fall of Instalok. - Hry
I'm just glad it wasn't because of any personal drama, just the revenge of an industry that couldn't tolerate them. All the best to them.
It was personal. My wife at the time left me for my “friend” of 20+ years/ fellow member. For 3 years after this I still continued to write/sing/motion graphics for the channel. I even had big plans for the next video but we never got the instrumental we requested and things just died after that. I still can’t type out or say the names of people that betrayed me because of PTSD but I’m sure you can guess who. For any fans reading this, please know that I gave it my all until the bitter end. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed our music. You guys gave me the strength to keep moving forward during the worst part of my life.
@@instalokchris That's terrible to hear! I hope you're doing better now. You'll always be a part of a very special time in gaming history to me.
@@instalokchris Reading this just...im so sorry man words cannot express how bad I feel, I hope things are turning around for you and I wish you only the best.
@@instalokchris damn wtf, I used to be a huge fan of the both of you and I always wondered what happened... sorry that happened to you brother, glad you were able to overcome that dark time in your life. Pretty sure it was Tony since you and Patrick were still cool afterwards. What a POS "friend", I can't look at Lunity the same after knowing this.
I always think of the Instalok cover first when I hear a well known song
ah so their channel didn't die because they got bored or were done with making videos, it's because of corporate greed and taxes. Man I hate this world
Indeed. Their songs are so unique even if the rhythm may be taken from an existing one. Let's never forget that artists like Katy Perry made tons of money with California Gurls when Tik Tok by Kesha already existed (and I know there are more cases like that one, but since they are part of the industry, that makes it ok).
Oh man, I listened to almost every single of their songs back in the day. Thresh Hook, Racecar Veigar, Ad Carry Maokai, Juggernauts, Out of Sight, Kayn, We are the supports, Up all not to gain LP, Gnar, DOOM Bots, those are my personaly top tier songs. Maybe I missed some but these are gold.
Also if you don't listen to "Moving forwars" everytime you play ranked, you aint climbing.
bro same i also loved their yasuo and braum songs
ngl, there was a time where I only did blucian and dang was it fun, racecar veigar was also fun as hell to play as
I literally forced my parents to play their music on car trips. We had downloaded most of their music on CDs. A lot of nostalgia
SAME lmfaooo
Insanely cringe
@@aryados1520 I'm sorry your parents didn't love you, hope your better now
@@aryados1520 Kids are cringe. No shame in that
they were really good at what they wre doing too, it's unthinkable copyright issues were unavoidable considering they were making parodies and not simply ripping off the song itself, making it something unique in itself
That was youtube back then, if you use a single snippet of a song you could lose all the money for that video and instalok was taking both instrumentals and rythm so they never stood a chance.
@@akatosh5792 I really dont understand, how YT can be so hostile towards their creators - siding against them every time - and still, there is no real competition.
@@aidenpearce6624because yt owned by google
even ios use google in their daily life
@@aidenpearce6624 google cares only about ad revenue. It cares more about money than creators. Its how it works
Man the community used to be so passionate in s5
I wish they did a goodbye video cause it was was ominous as hell when the uploads stopped with no updates
Hopefully we get a reunion one day cause i know chris wants to do another song perhaps if all there schedules line up again
its a shame really those songs were just so good i still listen to them to this day
Certified League classics :)
still, when I hear some old popular pop song in a mall I'm more reminded of the Instalok version than the original. I'm so glad that I found the group in 2014 and got to experience some of its best times. It is still bitter sweet, but going back to old songs and listening to them again never ceases to fill me with peace.
tbh your rise and fall series are the best, hope you continue making more
Please do review SIVHD one of my favorite youtuber of LoL
yeah, was thinking the same.
i miss siv and spazie vids so bad
@@cbjohannesen6008spazie still streams, albeit no league, but very entertaining nonetheless
SIV HD goated jukes and LeBlanc and Ezreal plays
What a nostalgic name i havent heard for a while
holy i miss them so much, i used to listen to them as a young teen when i started league a whole decade ago...
Great idea for a video and not taking a more casual route to look at someone falling out w the comminity!
Another banger of a video bro! Brilliant content!
The disgusting copyright claim abuse strikes again. I wish people who falsely claimed copyright over content were punished outside of civil courts...
i still listen to their entire discography at least once a month
Always a high quality content. Kudos! 👌🏻👌🏻
I still listen to them they were awsome
Guys.. I love this series and the detailed information review of all sources to provide us with 100% facts and not false info. Like he said in the video, it's like bittersweet. I remember all of those who have had a brutal downfall yet it makes me remember the good times!
I hope this doesn't happen, but imagine someone, 9 years from now makes a video saying... "The Downfall of LoL Athlete" .. I had the chills writting that ... really hope it doesn't happen but just think about it! Imagine all the images that might go through your mind and all the things you learned about other downfalls he made!
Thank you for this video!
Damn, this wave of nostalgia. Well done!
I still love their music. And still watch it regularly
Makes me want to listen to their songs again:)
i remember instalok but DO YOU REMEMBER PLENTAKILL???????
Pentakill riots in house band or another yt cause technically if your talking about there in house they did release new album during the ruination event
@@hraesvelgr_va4607 PLENTAKILL CANT U READ
@@djolo5140 I can indeed read my friend but I only know kolo9 and friends 😂 (community joke)
anyway if you looked at there page there planing a comeback
They never really fell off just decided completing school and having steady income was a better decision then deal with yt before everything flipped on its head Like what lunity did
@@hraesvelgr_va4607 Plentakill was another Parody Group with some amazing songs. They were a bit more under the radar tho.
i used to listen to them while playing duos with a friend, good times
I recall that it wasn't just the instalock trio who were struggling with youtube copyright fiasco. Many suffered from the copyright plague that allowed big company to shut down any content and music creator if their image, name or tune was used, despite being alter since iT was free use online
U can still support the orginal creator but big cooperation don't want to let the small fella breathe at all ;D
At least now I know what happen to the instalock fam, ty I was wondering for 6 years ;D
Very Good video, was really awesome to watch
They were great! I hope they are doing the best :)
Wow, really great deep dive.
The fact that I only knew the american songs based on their parody cover is still what I missed, now I got nothing new to listen to but all the classics instalok has made
I actually still listening on them
Yknow, as weird as this makes me feel, it still makes me happy to know that I'm still a part of helping Falconshield afford to make the music he wants to, even with a flailing channel.
can you by any chance do gripex? I haven't heard that guy in a while.
they were ahead of their time. i hope they're doing good now
men i remember blasting their songs back in 2016/2017 especially curtain call, i was like 13 and now im 20, life is brutal
I wish them nothing bjt the best, you absolutely chose the right title for this one!
At least there still is falcon shield, consistently releasing banger after banger. Theyre by far my favorite lol band and just generally one of my favourite bands
Same
Also plentakill seems to be coming back
The Yordles were pretty good too
Good video man can we have hashinshin next? he is actually still a full time streamer and one of the most passionate player of this godforsaken game, would be interesting to see a video on his unfortunate downfall
It is sad that he got screwed over so hard by false accusations.
Also with just how negative he seems to be
Could you do what happened to yamikazian old time favorite of mine that just doesnt upload anymore aswell
I would love to see the rise and fall of keyori or uberdanger.
Uberdanger honestly made some of his best content when he stopped making league content
Keyori having Classic WoW and FFXIV turn him female is certainly something.
legends the songs from instalok
Them, PlentaKill and AoD were such Gigachads
i seriously loved them, so sad that they had to surrender in the end
bro listening to instalok yasuo every single mid yasuo game, good ol days
Now make one about Badministrator
Can you do uberdanger?
First comment I think, also what an insightful video :)
How can I get ahold of thes3 guys?
It's funny to see how Sony or the songwriters take down the videos, but I've discovered many of these artists through Instalok's versions. It annoys me to think that we could have had a new song for each character. I would have loved to hear a cover by Kidd Keo, for example...
Pentakill is another group like instalok that kinda faded away sadly
Let's gooo
Change my mind but this whole series is a testiment how monopoly status kills gaming studios in the end. Riot felt so safe in their seat up until Fortnite that due to probably greed, they didnt feel the need to support content creators for their game. To no suprise the league content on youtube are only stream clips highlights nowadays. I am 100 % certain that without branching out into other genres and media, Riot would be just a memory from the old days like those content creators.
It is a shame and dreaming about a timeline where Riot actually cared is quite depressing seeing how it turned out.
LoL is truly an anomoly in the gaming industry through and through.
Huh isnt riot lauded for being good to their content creators? Esp as opposed to blizzard
Oh my god, thank you LoLAthlete! I was one of your viewers who requested a review about instalok and you did it, I cannot thank you enough! Always appreciated your efforts on doing this type of videos.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video :)
@LoLAthlete thanks for this, so nostalgic, would you perchance be able to do stonewall008?
How about a history of the yordles (the CZcams channel)?
I don't play League anymore, but if you ask me, their songs are still peak. Them and Falconshield.
Yesterday for some reason the Gnar song pops Up in my mind. Now the algorithm Show me this..spooky.
And its sad to watch it. Just because reasons like "this is my music even there are whole different Lyrics" cry cry... ******ing money and greed :/ And a intolerate industry and people who are act and thinking like this. The case of Instalok was pure until this shit comes in:/
great video as always, can i suggest you take a look at nightblue3 in the future? i mean he's still currently streaming and active on youtube, but he has risen and fall then vanished for a couple of time before coming back and also be one of the faces of league streamer back then, i'm very interested in your take at his story
Really hurts, but i must be fair and say, i lost i terest in their songs in 2015, even when i never stoped playing LoL.
That their came songs to other games, annoyed me really much.
Im glad they gave it all they had and moved on to successful careers. It's unfortunate that the legal system was used to exploit their channel until they had nothing left.
To Summarize: CZcams fucked them up
dam i forgot they was a thing
Were*
What does the lux say still my favorite
I remember they were super popular back in the early days, but then they disappeared🤔🤔
s fun how i listen Thresh Hook before Treasure ahahha
saddest video in a while
I still jam out to AD carry Maokai.
You make it sounds like they were the first to do league parodys to songs, but Plentakills first video is 12 years old as of now ^^
They didnt make videos with ingame footage but lyric wise, a similar direction
That´s exactly what I wanted to mention
do a video on plentakill. they are even older than instalok
whats baron?
Yeah its crazy that the music industry could do that. Its not like the songs were ripoffs. Sure, they wouldnt work without the instrumentals and beats and so on, but the texts there 100% exchanged
I miss what does teemo say
This is disgusting this happened to them
When you got people like sniperwolf just talking over a video and making full revenue
Yet they have to make catchy lyrics and good flow for a song yes they use old beats from other songs but they need to think of lyrics and find stuff that works around the song and the game community and its gota be relate able in some ways to the community
Like thats just unfair for them, they did such a good job i even listen to them still till today and badministrator
Ah yes, copyright issues killing another channel. Fair use is so random in youtube
CZcams rule/policy changes really did him dirty in the most devious way possible :/
League just stopped being the popular game that literally everyone played. Going through university at the time almost everyone in my class played League, even most of the girls (something that was completely unheard of in most videogames). Trends moved away to Hearthstone, Overwatch and eventually battle royales like Fortnite. Many streamers and content creators got frustrated with League as it focused more on E-sports balance than fun.
Ooh so thats why that they stopped publishing songs. Imma guess copyright problems also caused the downfall of other music/video parody channels
same case with daniel kim of pop danthology
i mean is it unlucky? around that age parody music videos were the hype.
Please make video about Badministrator
3:09 / 13:45
its there voice thought i listen to them but no this probably sounds like hate its not just not my type of music
So it's because they got screwed over by the industry and not due to toxic and shitty behaviors.
It's one of the downfalls that you can feel sad about.
Great video, great content! Not tryna jinx you or wish anything bad for you but you should probably prepare a video for yourself titled "The rise and fall of LoLAthlete" for when league dies, becomes irrelevant and everyone moves on from it in the future.
Some suggestions for topics:
Keyori
UberDanger

vvvortic
Brofresco
SivHD

Sky Williams (though the Sky House thing is pretty well known at this point, what he has been doing up to now is a good discussion)
Ciderhelm
CouilleBleu
Tf happened to sky i got no clue
@@WostecGamesDie You can check out a video made by Bowblax on that topic but tldr; Sky had this house where he had other people live with him as his tenants and he was very toxic. Allegations were thrown against him, all that stuff. I recall he tried to address the allegations in a stream but his stream got cut off abruptly. He was also in debt but I dunno if he has paid them off to this day.
Okay nvm I found the video wtf I’m sorry for bugging you on the other vid
I know that the copyright problems were big, but sadly they also never took sponsors, back when everyone who did in CZcams were "sellouts" that also was a big problem, I know they did it out of principles but... I wouldn't have minded if they were still alive
Oh yeah, this reminds me of the kshway fiasco. After that his upload frequency dropped by a lot.
I remember we are the supports and what does the teemo say. It does not help that league as a whole is dying/dead holding on by rev from people watching the e-sports and the ridiculous people that need every skin or fall into the sunk cost fallacy leaving them in a state stuck to the game whether they want to or not. The best i can really say about league at this point is that it is still really fun to just mess around with friends, but it is not really fun in solo play. Everything fun/diverse that once was has been destroyed Dominion/Twisted Treeline/Ascension/Butchers Bridge/Nexus Blitz and events like Butcher's Bridge and PvE modes that show that they care about their player base. I have mostly stopped for the past 2+ years because of how stale it has gotten but come back to play some arams or Play my favorite champions (Orianna Support, Azir bot/mid, and Ashe) They have stream lined the game to its detriment that the wonder of expression of play is gone, the most recent thing i can remember is removing the constant healing from Moonstone while damaging enemies, it made it so you could go support twitch and be a heal bot with moderate ap damage as support. And before that they made it so that you could not get moonstone procs off of font of life rune proc'ing Killing my favorite ashe support build for sustain and Kiting.
League isnt dying lmao. The west isnt the world. Heck its only a small portion of the league population

makes me wonder what kind of degenerate company sues a bunch of creatives for something that clearly falls under parody and shouldnt be susceptible to copyright laws.
Me who literally don't know who they are and have been playing LoL for 3 years: hmm interesting.
Yeah because they weren't around anymore during that time...
can u make a video on ratirl?
I actually already have a mini-doc about him “The Controversial Rise of RATIRL”
@@LoLAthlete ah ye didnt see it the first time, thanks
i would have said fuck it and took youtube to court honestly youtube is lazy and i doubt they would win an obvious fair use case if not oh well you tried

It's too bad Lunity also broke up as well. Wish all of them the best.
"high quality content" It's league of legends parodys of pop songs, I'm surprised they even got as big as they did. Goes to show how popular league was at the time.
good vid, recommend having some background music to kill dead air

corny songs thats why
Instalock, the absolutely most overrated music ever. Parody music is low effort and I don't get why they were popular
