  • Earlier, Defence24.pl found out off the record that an agreement has been signed by and between PGZ and Leonardo, on the delivery of three 76 mm artillery systems that would constitute one of the elements of the Miecznik class missile frigates weapons systems. The warships in question have been procured by the Polish Navy.

Curious as to why there multiple clips of a Bofors 57mm Mk 3 in a video describing the Leonardo 76mm of the Polish Navy? You got the wrong gun A A Ron!

      It’s a 5 inch cannon
      Common since before WW2
Don’t use bigger due to ship size

      @@tomhenry897 Correction: 76mm = 3 inch.

recoil of larger calibers require more robust structure on a ship. Also, space, handling and economy play a part also.Personally I would think the 5 inch/127mm cannon and projectile would be more useful, also longer range, larger warhead.

The Polish Navy do not have a requirement for a gun larger than 76mm, which is more than sufficient to do anything they want it to do (mostly firing warning shots across bows). A "bigger gun" (presumably 127mm) has trade-offs. It will have much greater mass and consume more ships volume, which might require a bigger ship. So what does it offer that the Poles want that makes it worth the extra cost?

@@MFitz12 like you said, the 76mm is far enough, and with the guided vulcano ammo they can be used for various purpose!
