Guardian of the Fleet: How the Phalanx CIWS Keeps Ships Safe

  • The development of the Phalanx CIWS began in the early 1970s, with General Dynamics being awarded the contract for its production. The first prototype system was offered to the U.S. Navy for evaluation on the destroyer leader USS King in 1973 and it was determined that further work was required to improve performance and reliability. The first ship fully fitted out was the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea in 1980.
    Since its introduction, the Phalanx CIWS has been continually updated and refined to address evolving threats and incorporate new technologies.
    The last upgrade Block 1B guns employ an electro-optical sighting system and offer anti-air and anti-surface capabilities not present in Blocks 0 through 1A. Block 1B systems can be linked with the RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) or SeaRAM systems.
    At the core of the Phalanx CIWS lies the M61 Vulcan, a six-barreled, 20mm rotary cannon capable of firing at a rate of 3,000 to 4,500 rounds per minute. The ammunition handling system has two conveyor belt systems. The first takes the rounds out of the magazine drum to the gun; the second takes empty shells or unfired rounds to the opposite end of the drum.
    The CIWS employs a duo of radar antennas that collaborate to target potential threats. The search antenna, housed within the radome atop the weapon control group's white-painted section, supplies the CIWS computer with data on the bearing, range, velocity, heading, and altitude of detected objects.

    Couldn’t understand the “20 gallons = 30 liters” part.

      A water cooling system for the 20mm barrels. At the rate of speed this gun fires it needs water cooling for its 6 barrels

    I absolutely love learning about engineering - it's a passion of mine! As an engineer myself, I have found engineering to be an incredibly rewarding experience, and it's always so satisfying to see a project come together. I love engineering because it allows us to make things that help improve quality of life in a wide variety of ways. From building bridges to developing medical technology, engineers are helping to make the world a better place! I am grateful for the opportunities engineering has provided me, and am constantly inspired by the innovation within the field.

      I hate it, bro if your a constructual engineer. NOBODY even looks at you, it's like. If your not doing mechanical or IT type engineering, then your a fucking loser.

      It means it's a 20mm caliber projectile that's fired from a 20mm long cartridge casing. The video seems to be a bit off though, as the actual caliber for a Vulcan cannon is 20x102mm, not 20x20mm.

    I'm curious to know how many ciws systems are put on a nimitz-class aircraft carrier. Like would 8 be too many or would it be not enough?

    • @ablewindsor1459
      @ablewindsor1459 Před rokem +1

      From Google Turd Answers :
      How many CIWS does a Nimitz have?
      These consist of either two or three RIM-7 Sea Sparrow or RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missile Mk 29 missile launchers designed for defense against aircraft and anti-ship missiles, as well as either three or four 20 mm Phalanx CIWS.

      How's it going to do against a swarm of 300 suicide drones each firing 4 missiles? The military usually has redundancies and I only see 1 or 2 on a ship. What if it's down for maintenance, jams up, is hit, over heats, etc.? Heck, they can approach the ship from every single direction or the opposite side where the gun is or just the front and the back.

    • @dtsai
      @dtsai Před rokem

      I saw a video game simulation and it's not good enough against a real attack. If I were them, I would create a new cheap gun boat like the F-15EX that loaded with multiple CIWSs and missiles for defense. So cheap, they could leave them off the coast of Islands like Taiwan or any remote island areas that need extra defense.
