      They defined the Type 055s as a cruiser as it functions just like their Ticonderogas.

      @@ParikshitBhujbal Wrong. The classification of large surface combatants (LSC´s) as "frigates" is primarily to be determined by the ship´s endurance and independent action range:
      Long range ("blue water") vessels: "Frigates" (In example: Danish Iver Huitfeldt-class 6,700 tons, range: 17,000 km).
      Medium range (green water): "Cruisers"/"Destroyers" (US Ticonderoga-class cruiser 9,600 tons, range: 11,000 km, and: US Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, range: 8,100 km).
      Short range (coastal water) vessels regardless of size: "Corvettes"/"Littoral combat ships"/ (Finnish Pohjanmaa-class corvettes 4,300 tons, range: 6,500 km, and US Freedom-class littoral combat ships, range: 6,500 km).
      Please note that most LSC´s classified as "frigates" are in fact not true frigates at all, but should really be downgraded to mere "destroyers" due to their short range and low endurance equal to the rather obsolete and useless US Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

    Gorshkov is good. Super gorshkov could be a destroyer. Russia should focus most on advanced corvettes around 350 feet long and focus on large vls units. Including forgoing a main gun and possibly a hangar to maximize missle units. Also should try and make it around 100 million dollars. Imagine a navy with several hundred modern missle corvettes on par with a small destroyer.

      Bro 350 feet long and forgoing a main gun and Hanger for VLS? Like why? You are more limited because of the vls and have to use expensive missiles against everything that the small caliber weapons (up to 30mm) cant defeat. Also you limit your ASW capability because without the hanger you loose your best ASW weapon. And only 100 million Dollars is Impossible because vls are quit expensive and you need modern Equipment to make the most of it. And then we cant forget that missiles cost extra 😉

      The russian navy is building the ship you described, the Derzky class corvette, but it is considered by many russian experts to be a failure, being as expensive as a frigate, smaller and less seaworthy. LCS moment. What russia needs is multipurpose ships like the Steregushiy or Gremyashiy, while the missile platform role is carried out by smaller corvettes. Grigorovich is the ASW ship, while the Gorshkov is basically a small multipurpose destroyer acting as the flagship of small fleets and replacing the Sovremennys

    Your assessment of Type 054 A is off the mark. I suggest you make a compative datasheet of capabilities of all the frgates except range and spead (because those are immaterial during a stand off engagement). You will find that aesa radar and supersonic missiles combined with a serious ASW capability 054 A is head and shoulders above its more expensive competiters

  • @burung81
    @burung81 Před rokem +17

    type 054A is a 4000ton, while the rest are the 5500+ tons, some even as heavy as destroyers. However, the role they play is different as the 054A didnt need to be heavily armed, playing anti subs and support for the main combatant, type 052D and type 055 DDG. While to some countries, the frigates is main surface combatant and thus heavier and better armed.

    • @jaredevans8263
      @jaredevans8263 Před rokem +8

      Honestly the Type 054A is really the only frigate that plays the traditional role of a frigate via armament, tonnage, and especially price. Some of the frigates on the list are upwards to $800 million USD each, which China can nearly make a type 055 cruiser or almost two type 052D destroyers for the same price. I feel like a lot of nations are throwing money down the drain on these frigates when a little more cash can get them destroyers which are wayyyy more powerful all around

      Why 'upgrade' to a destroyer when they perform different roles?

    • @jaredevans8263
      @jaredevans8263 Před rokem +1

      @Louis the T26 isn't even in service yet, and its wayyyyyy more expensive than the Type 054A for uncertain improvements in sub hunting. And if you mean the T23 frigate, the Type 054A has got all the same type of sonars as the T23 while having two more anti-sub weapons systems (4 systems total, including the Yu-8 anti-sub missile from VLS) versus only 2 for the T23. And nations upgrading to destroyers for a little extra cash makes sense from cost standpoint because destroyers are better multipurpose vessels than frigates due to more weaponry and more powerful radars. Those nations treat their frigates as multipurpose ships rather than sub hunters anyway, so why not get a destroyer instead?

    • @Louis-ej1lx
      @Louis-ej1lx Před rokem

      @Jared Evans
      Weapons is a very minor part of what makes a ship good at ASW 😂.
      Both T23 and T26 are far quieter than 054. 054 is diesel making them very noisy vessels, CODLAG and CODLOG of T23 and T26 make them amongst the quietest and T26 the quietest ASW vessel out there.
      The primary ASW weapon of a ship is its helicopter. The 20km odd range of ASROC and presumably the Chinese equivalent is dwarfed by the 60km+ range of a heavyweight torpedo. This will be a bigger issue for 054A especially due to its diesel propulsion.
      Merlin is also the best ASW helicopter in the world.
      The radar on 054A is reverse engineered from Russia and is inferior to Artisan. As are the sonars on 054A.
      Multi purpose destroyers do not really exist. All multi purpose destroyers trade off ASW. Arleigh Burkes for example are very noisy.
      The closest would be 2 AAW FREMMs of the MN but they trade off AAW capability.
      The closest ship to see it is T26 Aussie variant but they are having lots of issues with the fact that if you add a large radar on a ship that’s not an AAW vessel, top weight is going to be an issue.

    Today's frigates have the size of destroyers. Meaning of frigates and destroyers don't matter anymore. Earlier these used to have specific role and lack other roles but today both of these types can do all roles. Today's frigates are multirole. So instead saying 8000 ship a frigate and another 7500 ton ship as destroyer, we can just say 'warships' otherwise will have to make clear distinction that a ship over 5000 ton is a destroyer.
